Exploring contradicting associations between anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and academic achievement: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Academic achievement is an important predictor of later life outcomes, yet its relationship with anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to clarify the direction and strength of these associations and is the first to synthesise evidence on moderators and mediators. METHOD: We searched Embase, PsycINFO, and PubMed from inception to 12 March 2025 for observational studies of anxiety disorders or OCD (exposure variables) and academic achievement (outcome) at any age. Study quality was assessed using the

Removing the academic framing in student evaluations improves achievement in children with dyslexia: The mediating role of self-judgement of competence.

Self-judgement is known to play a crucial role in academic achievement, and as such, may be expected to have an impact on students with dyslexia. Their self-judgements may reflect the negative stereotype of low competence that targets people with disabilities. Their repeated academic failures may lead to a negative association between "school" and "failure". The aim of the present study was to investigate how such factors contribute to academic failure in students with dyslexia. Participants were 183 French middle school students. We assessed students' self-judgement and manipulated the framin

Effectiveness of accelerated reader on children's reading outcomes: A meta-analytic review.

Accelerated reader (AR) is a computerized reading program commonly used in schools. The program aims to enhance students' reading achievement and encourage students to read more through goal setting and frequent reading practice. A meta-analytic review of the AR was conducted to analyse its effectiveness as an evidence-based intervention for improving student reading achievement, attitude, and motivation. This study investigated potential moderating variables, including publication type, participant, and study characteristics that impact student reading outcomes. A total of 44 studies from pee

Improved Educational Achievement as a Path to Desistance.

In this article we present a summary of the literature on the associations between learning difficulties/disabilities and juvenile delinquency. This literature is almost a hundred years old, but, although reportedly demonstrating the low academic achievement-delinquency connection, contains numerous unanswered questions regarding the frequency, strength, direction, stability, and causality of these associations. We then use this literature to contextualize the research taking place at the Houston Learning Disabilities (LD) Hub, a member of the LD Centers and Hubs Network, supported by National

Anxiety and Performance in High-Achieving Adolescents: Associations Among 8 General and Specific Anxiety Measures and 13 School Grades.

Despite years of research, the links between domain-general and domain-specific anxieties (e.g., social), as well as their links with academic performance in different domains remain poorly understood. The current study explores anxiety-academic performance associations across eight domain-general and domain-specific anxiety measures (tapping into trait, state, maths, spatial, and social anxiety, worry, and anxiety sensitivity, as well as symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder, GAD) and 13 school subjects in a large (N = ~800) sample of schoolchildren (Mage = 15.26), selected for high achiev

Associations of physical fitness with sustained overt attention and academic performance in children with learning disabilities.

Physical fitness has consistently been linked to cognitive and academic performance, with sustained attention recognized as a key predictor of academic success (DOI 10.1123/apaq.2019-0108). However, few studies have explored whether sustained attention moderate the relationship between physical fitness and academic performance in children with learning disabilities (LD), and existing findings remain inconclusive due to certain limitations. This study investigated the moderating role of sustained attention in the association between physical fitness and academic performance among children with

Multi-method examination of cognitive disengagement syndrome and ADHD inattentive symptoms in relation to early adolescents' academic functioning.

Cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS), previously referred to as sluggish cognitive tempo, is a set of symptoms characterized by excessive daydreaming, mental fogginess, and slowed behavior/thinking. Studies examining the association between CDS and academic functioning have reported mixed findings and have relied upon limited measures of CDS, broad ratings of academic impairment, and/or focused only on elementary-aged children. The current study examined the relationship between CDS and academic functioning in adolescents using a comprehensive, multi-informant, multi-method design. Participa

Supporting Students with Migraine: Examining Current Practices and Identifying Strategies for Educational Success.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Pediatric migraine contributes to disability with significant interference on academic success. This review aims to explore the evidence of school-based accommodations and provide clinicians with guidance on how to support academic success. RECENT FINDINGS: Many clinicians support the implementation of school-based accommodations for youth with migraine; however, there has been little research exploring efficacy despite wide-spread acceptance. Findings from anxiety literature offer insight into prospective issues with certain accommodations, warranting consideration for

The Reading Challenges, Strategies, and Habits of University Students With a History of Reading Difficulties and Their Relations to Academic Achievement.

Given the increase in students with learning disabilities entering university, we investigated a broader group-students with a history of reading difficulties (HRD)-who are known to be at risk of academic struggles. We identified the self-reported reading challenges and strategies of university students with HRD (n = 49) and those with no history of reading difficulties (NRD; n = 88) and examined group differences and relations with first-year grade point average (GPA). Students with HRD reported more difficulties with perceived reading comprehension, concentration, and reading speed than stud

A Multilevel Meta-analysis on Academic Achievement Among Maltreated Youth.

Maltreatment can influence normative development and negatively impact emotional, behavioral, and social functioning in youth. As a result, it is not surprising that maltreated youth, as compared to non-maltreated youth, tend to underperform academically. Research on the academic performance of maltreated youth has increased over the last decade and several review papers have been published in this area. While the conclusions of these review articles have been that maltreated youth are at greater risk for academic deficits as compared to their non-maltreated peers, there are several conflictin

Academic achievement of students without special educational needs and disabilities in inclusive education-Does the type of inclusion matter?

The main aim of the study, conducted in Poland, was to compare the academic achievement of 1552 (at Time 1) students without disabilities in three educational settings: general, without students with disabilities, inclusive (with co-teaching), with three to five students with disabilities, and inclusive (without co-teaching), with one to two students with disabilities. The study was longitudinal, with three waves eight months apart. The latent growth curve model was used for data analysis. The results have shown that changes in academic achievement (for language and for mathematics) over time

A multimethod examination of hope and adolescent STEM career expectancies.

INTRODUCTION: Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields are growing rapidly and understanding adolescent's interest and hope for pursuing a STEM career is essential for additional growth and opportunity collectively and individually. Hope is a cognitive-motivational construct that includes three components: hopeful future expectations (HFEs), intentional self-regulation (ISR), and connection, and is associated with academic achievement and career pursuit; it has not been examined in relation to STEM. This study fills a gap in the literature by taking a multimethod approac

Group performance differences in reading, math, and science by fourth graders with and without communication disorders.

PURPOSE: Theoretical perspectives of learning academic subjects and curricular standards highlight the critical role of language ability. Thus, it is important to assess the academic achievement of children with language deficits to ensure the development of interventions to facilitate success in the classroom. This investigation aimed to compare the performance of fourth graders with communication disorders (ComDis) to those with typical language development (GenEd) on measures of reading, mathematics, and science achievement. Interaction effects of gender and income with language status were

Good learners or trouble makers? Study on the relationship between academic performance and antisocial behavior of junior high school students.

The school bullying incident has aroused widespread concern in current society. How to manage students' anti-social behavior has become an increasingly serious problem for administrators. This study uses a sample of 8270 junior high school students to examine the mechanism of academic achievement on students' antisocial behavior. The results showed that academic performance has a U-shaped impact on antisocial behavior. This study further found that the U-shaped effect of academic performance on antisocial behavior was mediated by the praise; In addition, this study also found that moral identi

The impact of psychopathology on academic performance in school-age children and adolescents.

Psychiatric symptoms have consistently been associated with negative educational outcomes. However, possible confounding variables, such as comorbid mental and environmental conditions, have not been well addressed. This study examined whether mental health problems were significantly linked to academic performance in a Spanish school-based sample, after adjustment for co-occurring psychiatric symptoms and multiple contextual factors. Parents completed a questionnaire regarding child's sociodemographic characteristics (i.e., gender, age, type of school, socioeconomic status, ethnicity), stress

The influence of genre on adolescent discourse skills: Do narratives tell the whole story?

Purpose: Narrative is the dominant focus of traditional standardised discourse assessment, yet the complex discourse needs of adolescence has led to increased interest in profiling skills in other monologic genres for this age group. This interest is not commensurate with a robust understanding of the influence of genre on adolescent discourse across word to whole-text language features. This knowledge is important to inform context(s) for assessment to profile strengths and weaknesses in discourse-level language.Method: One hundred and sixty adolescents between 12 and 15 years (M= 13;1, SD= 1
