Review of the concept of Profilicollis Meyer, 1931 with a description of Profilicollis rancoensis n. sp. (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae) from the freshwater crab, Aegla abtao Schmitt, 1942 (Decapoda: Anomura) in Chile, with a key to congeneric species.

Profilicollis rancoensis n. sp. is the tenth species of Profilicollis Meyer, 1931 which includes 9 other species mostly known from marine decapod crabs and shore birds. Cystacanths of P. rancoensis are described from the dominant freshwater crab Aegla abtao in Ranco Lake, Chile and are morphologically distinguished from cystacanths of the 9 other species based on a combination of 4 characters. These are body size, number of proboscis hook rows, number of hooks per row, and length of the largest anterior 2-4 hooks. Male and female cystacanths of P. rancoensis are 2.10-3.33 mm long having an ovo

Helminth parasites of characiform fishes from farming systems in the states of Acre and Maranhão, Western Amazonia and Northeastern regions, Brazil.

Aquaculture has been recognized as one of the main solutions to the growing global food demand, as well as a significant resource for addressing the limitations imposed on wild fisheries. The most important fish species for Brazilian fish farming is Colossoma macropomum due to its zootechnical characteristics, economic and cultural importances. In cultivated systems, the presence of parasites can represent a major problem. Under these conditions, parasites of the phyla Acanthocephala and Platyhelminthes are commonly found parasitizing farmed fishes. This study aimed to investigate the helminth

Intestinal Parasites of Pets and Other House-kept Animals in Moscow.

A study screening pet animals (dogs, cats, chinchillas, ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits, primates, reptiles, and hedgehogs) within Moscow city limits for intestinal parasitic diseases has been conducted over a period of 6 years. According to the study, parasitic infections caused by intestinal protozoa are found in pet animals more frequently than by intestinal helminths. Although dogs and cats exhibit the highest level of diversity of intestinal parasite species, in the group of exotic animals, helminth infection are found much less frequently and parasitic fauna is represented mostly by intest

Host-parasite interactions of the sardine, Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum, 1792) from the Atlanto-Iberian Waters.

The European sardine, Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum, 1792) is one of the most abundant small pelagic clupeids and holds significant commercial value. Adult specimens were obtained along the Western and Southern Iberia, covering three ICES sub-divisions: 9aCN-Northerwestern Iberia, 9aCS-Southern Iberia and 9aS-South Iberia. A parasitological survey was carried out to characterize sardine parasite fauna and to assess its potential as a proxy for the spatial distribution of free-living parasite biodiversity and sardine trophic interactions, based on parasite richness and diversity. Parasites were a

Human Acanthocephaliasis: a Thorn in the Side of Parasite Diagnostics.

Acanthocephala is a phylum of parasitic pseudocoelomates that infect a wide range of vertebrate and invertebrate hosts and can cause zoonotic infections in humans. The zoologic literature is quite rich and diverse; however, the human-centric literature is sparse, with sporadic reports over the past 70 years. Causal agents of acanthocephaliasis in humans are reviewed as well as their biology and life cycle. This review provides the first consolidated and summarized report of human cases of acanthocephaliasis based on English language publications, including epidemiology, clinical presentation,

Diversity of helminths parasitising North-East Atlantic and Antarctic seabirds.

Seabirds are largely used as indicators of Ocean health and are final hosts of several helminth parasites. However, the helminth fauna of seabirds is still poorly studied. Here, we quantified the diversity of gastrointestinal parasites in 52 individuals belonging to 10 seabird species with different habitat preferences and feeding strategies from the North-East Atlantic and Antarctica. Fresh carcasses were collected in Northern France and at Svarthamaren (Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica), helminth parasites were extracted from the gastrointestinal tract, and were identified by morphological ins

Acanthocephalan infection and sparganosis in a green tree snake (Dendrelaphis punctulata).

Acanthocephalan and spargana parasites were identified within a body wall mass during exploratory surgery in a wild green tree snake. Acanthocephalan parasites have not previously been reported in this species. Surgical excision, the treatment of choice, could not be achieved because of the extensive infiltration of the coelomic cavity.

The white grunt, Haemulon plumierii (Lacepède, 1801) as paratenic and definitive host of two acanthocephalan species, with the description of a new species of Dollfusentis (Palaeacanthocephala: Leptohynchoididae) from the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico.

Acanthocephalans are a group of obligate endoparasites that alternate between vertebrates and invertebrates to complete their life cycles. Occasionally, the same individual host acts as a definitive or paratenic host for different acanthocephalan species. In this study, acanthocephalans were sampled in marine fish in three localities of the Yucatán Peninsula; adults and cystacanths were recovered from the intestine and body cavity, respectively, of Haemulon plumierii from off the coast of Sisal, Yucatán. Ribosomal DNA sequences (small and large subunits) were used to test the phylogenetic posi

Preservation of macroparasite species via classic plastination: an evaluation.

Plastination is a preservation method for biological specimens, with important advantages over classic conservation techniques with formaldehyde or alcohol. Plastinated specimens are dry, odourless, and free of carcinogenic and toxic solutions. There are only few references about the plastination of parasites. Moreover, there is no information on the effect of plastination on the morphology and morphometry of these animals. The aim of this study was to define a plastination protocol to preserve various species of parasites, namely the nematodes Parascaris equorum (Goeze, 1782); Ascaris suum Go

Interspecific differences in carotenoid content and sensitivity to UVB radiation in three acanthocephalan parasites exploiting a common intermediate host.

Few endoparasite species are pigmented. Acanthocephalans are an exception however, with several species being characterised by yellow to orange colouration both at the immature (cystacanth) and adult stages. However, the functional and adaptive significance of carotenoid-based colourations in acanthocephalans remains unclear. One possibility is that the carotenoid content of acanthocephalan cystacanths acts as a protective device against ultra-violet radiation (UVR) passing through the translucent cuticle of their crustacean hosts. Indeed, acanthocephalans often bring about behavioural changes

Histopathologic Evaluation, Ultrastructure, and Molecular Characterization of Acanthocephalan Infections in Freshwater Turtles.

Turtle acanthocephalans are a depauperate group of helminths, yet they parasitize a quarter of all turtle species in North America. Despite acanthocephalans being common in turtles, their potential as disease-causing agents remains unknown. In other vertebrate hosts, acanthocephalans are known to cause pathologic changes upon attachment (via with their armed proboscis) to the intestinal wall of the host. Herein, we report new turtle host associations, ultrastructural characterization, and molecular data for turtle acanthocephalans. However, the primary goal of this study was to evaluate whethe

Microbial artists: the role of parasite microbiomes in explaining colour polymorphism among amphipods and potential link to host manipulation.

Parasite infections are increasingly reported to change the microbiome of the parasitized hosts, while parasites bring their own microbes to what can be a multi-dimensional interaction. For instance, a recent hypothesis suggests that the microbial communities harboured by parasites may play a role in the well-documented ability of many parasites to manipulate host phenotype, and explain why the degree to which host phenotype is altered varies among conspecific parasites. Here, we explored whether the microbiomes of both hosts and parasites are associated with variation in host manipulation by

PALEOPARASITOLOGY OF HUMAN ACANTHOCEPHALAN INFECTION: A REVIEW AND NEW CASE FROM BONNEVILLE ESTATES ROCKSHELTER, NEVADA, U.S.A.

This study reports a new case of acanthocephalan (thorny-headed worm) eggs in a coprolite from Bonneville Estates Rockshelter in eastern Nevada and uses archaeological and ethnographic data to better understand long-term relationships between people and acanthocephalans. Acanthocephalans are parasitic worms that use arthropods as intermediate hosts in their multi-host life cycles. Though acanthocephaliasis is rare among humans today, cases have increased in the last decade, and the discovery of acanthocephalan eggs in coprolites from archaeological sites in the Great Basin suggests a deep, sha

The erection of a new genus, Neotegorhynchus n. g. (Palaeacanthocephala, Illiosentidae), with a redescription of Neotegorhynchus cyprini n. comb. from Cyprinus carpio from the Yangtze River basin, China.

The present paper summarizes acanthocephalan parasites of the family Illiosentidae Golvan, 1960, collected from the intestine of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) from Taihu Lake in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, China. A total of 21 acanthocephalan specimens were found in 6 carps (prevalence of 35%). All the studied specimens were assigned to the family Illiosentidae based on the family-specific morphology of the worms and the presence of 8 cement glands in the males. However, the specimens recently found in common carp differed from all 14 extant genera of the family Illiosentidae in the structure o

Host sharing and host manipulation by larval helminths in shore crabs: cooperation or conflict?

Larval helminths of different species that share the same intermediate host and are transmitted by predation to the same definitive host may cooperate in their attempts to manipulate the behaviour of the intermediate host, while at the same time having conflicts of interests over the use of host resources. A few studies have indicated that intermediate hosts harbouring larval helminths have altered concentrations of neurotransmitters in their nervous system, and thus measuring levels of neurotransmitters in host brains could serve to assess the respective and combined effect of different helmi
