Cardiovascular responses elicited by linear acceleration in humans.

Although activation of otolith receptors is known to elicit cardiovascular responses in animals, it is unclear whether vestibular stimulation can evoke changes in blood pressure and heart rate (which are independent of motion sickness) in humans. In the present study, ten normal subjects and three patients with profound bilateral reduction in vestibular function, who were seated upright with the torso aligned with the gravitation vector, were subjected to fore, aft, or lateral linear acceleration (approximately 0.2 g, attaining approximately 2 m/s in 900 ms, and decelerating for 3 s at 0.07 g)

The cerebrovascular response to experimental lateral head acceleration.

A number of microvascular changes, such as the development of astrocyte lucency, increased endothelial pit/vesicle activity, development of crater like lesions, and endothelial microvilli have been reported after injury to the brain. Lateral head acceleration in the non-human primate, however, still provides the best experimental model for human diffuse axonal injury. No attempt has yet been made to document the spatial extent or time course of the microvascular response to acceleration injury to the head. We have examined the brains of baboons 1, 4, 6, and 12 h and 7 days after acceleration i

Acceleration of flow rate in obstructive detrusor instability.

The acceleration of flow rate (a) was calculated from spontaneous free flow uroflowmetry in 86 males with bladder outflow obstruction due to benign prostatic hypertrophy. Forty patients had stable bladders and 46 had detrusor instability. The parameter a was also determined in 30 controls. All of the obstructed patients had lower values of a than the controls but patients with detrusor instability tended to show a higher acceleration of flow rate than those with stable bladders. In individual cases, however, parameter a was unreliable in distinguishing stable from unstable patients.

Acceleration of ethanol metabolism by past thiamine deficiency.

Six months after severe thiamine deficiency, when their body and liver weights had normalized, male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to constant ethanol vapor concentrations for 6 days in an inhalation chamber and blood ethanol concentrations (BECs) were determined. Previously induced thiamine deficiency was associated with about a 50% reduction of BECs and a significant increase in liver alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity suggesting a persistent acceleration of ethanol metabolism. No significant changes were found in liver aldehyde dehydrogenase activity, plasma levels of thyroxine, testost

The effects of acceleration forces on night vision.

The effects of Gy and Gz acceleration forces on cone-type mesopic vision threshold values are examined. An experiment has been conducted on the Dynamic Environment Simulator, a three-axis human centrifuge, to reproduce an acceleration environment in a simulated night-flight combat situation. Acceleration environments studied were levels of +1 Gz, + 1Gy, +1.4 Gz, +2 Gz, +3 Gz, and +2 Gy in combination with +1 Gz. A visual task was performed which determined 20/50 visual acuity illumination threshold values. Physiological parameters recorded were arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) by ear oximetry

Normalizing Acceleration and Power in Elite Soccer With Acceleration-Speed Profiles: A Case Study of Game Segment, Position, and Goal Differential.

PURPOSE: Acceleration-speed (AS) profiling provides a novel way to quantify soccer players' maximum running ability without requiring dedicated sprint tests. This study explored how normalizing player effort with AS profiles could reveal unique patterns of changes in effort compared with nonnormalized absolute values during distinct goal differential conditions throughout matches and across positions. METHODS: AS profiles were developed from global navigation satellite system sensor data from 3 years of match play from a women's national soccer team. Acceleration and power data were then grou

Biceps femoris muscle-tendon strain during an entire overground sprint acceleration: a biomechanical explanation for hamstring injuries in the acceleration phase.

The objectives of this study were to analyse the peak muscle-tendon (MT) strain of the hamstring during an entire acceleration sprint overground and examine their relationship with relative joint angles and segment orientation in the sagittal plane, which are the direct causes of MT strain. Kinematic data were recorded using a 3D inertial motion capture system in 21 male semi-professional soccer players during 40-metre overground sprint. Scaled musculoskeletal models were used to estimate peak MT strain in the hamstring over 16 steps. Biceps femoris long head (BFLH) exhibited the largest peaks

Photoplethysmography acceleration indices as digital biomarkers of cardiometabolic health.

Non-invasive monitoring of cardiovascular health is critical for early detection of dysfunction. Photoplethysmography (PPG) is already widely used in wearable devices to track cardiovascular signals, such as heart rate and pulse wave characteristics. The second derivative of the PPG signal, known as the accelerated plethysmogram (APG), provides indices reflecting arterial stiffness and vascular aging. Despite their potential as digital biomarkers, systematic comparisons across clinical populations are limited. In this cross-sectional study, four APG-derived indices (b/a, c/a, d/a, AGI) were an

Epigenetic age acceleration and psychosocial stressors in early childhood.

The impact of psychosocial stress on mental and physical health is well-documented. Adverse experiences that occur early in life are particularly impactful on later life health. Epigenetic modifications, such as DNA methylation, have been proposed as a possible mechanism to mediate the impact of childhood events on adult health outcomes. The development of epigenetic clocks to estimate epigenetic age has revealed many examples of epigenetic age acceleration (and deceleration) in association with exposure to psychosocial stressors. Furthermore, altered epigenetic aging has been associated with

Epigenetic Age Acceleration and Frailty Among People with HIV.

DNA methylation is a hallmark of aging; yet, our understanding of epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) in relationship to frailty in people with HIV (PWH) is poor. We conducted an observational study among PWH from the Veterans Aging Cohort Study (VACS) to test the hypothesis that EAA markers were associated with frailty. Epigenome-wide DNA methylation data from blood samples were used to derive EAA markers based on four established epigenetic clocks: Horvath, Hannum, PhenoAge, and GrimAge. Frailty was defined using a previously studied VACS frailty-related phenotype based on ≥1 survey item chara

Neighborhood Stressors and Epigenetic Age Acceleration Among Older Americans.

OBJECTIVES: Exposure to stressful neighborhood environments is a well-established risk factor for health deterioration and premature death. However, the biological underpinnings are not fully understood. Epigenetic aging may function as a key molecular pathway to adverse health outcomes among residents of high-stress neighborhoods. This study examines the associations between neighborhood social stressors (socioeconomic deprivation, observed and perceived disorder, and low social cohesion) and epigenetic age (DunedinPACE and Principal component adjusted [PC] PCHorvath, PCHannum, PCPhenoAge, PC

Increased epigenetic age acceleration in the hidradenitis suppurativa skin.

Epigenetic (or DNA methylation) age is calculated based on methylation of certain cytosine-guanine (CpG) repeats, and it can accurately estimate one's chronologic age. Importantly, epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) is highly predictive of age-associated morbidity and all-cause mortality. Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with significant systemic disease burden. Here, we performed a pilot study to calculate EAA from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded skin samples using Illumina Infinium MethylationEpic BeadChip arrays. Our results demonstrated no significant di

Biomechanical effects of high acceleration on the temporomandibular joint.

The symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are easily developed in pilots after long flights, such as joint pain, anterior displacement disc and so on. Related studies have suggested that abnormal high acceleration would cause temporomandibular joint (TMJ) lesions. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the biomechanical effects of high acceleration on the TMJs. The 3D models of the maxilla, mandible, articular disc were generated by Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of a healthy volunteer without any TMD symptoms. Then, the loads were added accor

Prebiotic Sugar Formation Under Nonaqueous Conditions and Mechanochemical Acceleration.

Monosaccharides represent one of the major building blocks of life. One of the plausible prebiotic synthesis routes is the formose network, which generates sugars from C1 and C2 carbon sources in basic aqueous solution. We report on the feasibility of the formation of monosaccharides under physical forces simulated in a ball mill starting from formaldehyde, glycolaldehyde, DL-glyceraldehyde as prebiotically available substrates using catalytically active, basic minerals. We investigated the influence of the mechanic energy input on our model system using calcium hydroxide in an oscillatory bal

Acceleration and suppression of resistance development by antibiotic combinations.

BACKGROUND: The emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance in bacteria is becoming a global public health problem. Combination therapy, i.e., the simultaneous use of multiple antibiotics, is used for long-term treatment to suppress the emergence of resistant strains. However, the effect of the combinatorial use of multiple drugs on the development of resistance remains elusive, especially in a quantitative assessment. RESULTS: To understand the evolutionary dynamics under combination therapy, we performed laboratory evolution of Escherichia coli under simultaneous addition of two-drug comb
