An Activity Index for Raw Accelerometry Data and Its Comparison with Other Activity Metrics.

Accelerometers have been widely deployed in public health studies in recent years. While they collect high-resolution acceleration signals (e.g., 10-100 Hz), research has mainly focused on summarized metrics provided by accelerometers manufactures, such as the activity count (AC) by ActiGraph or Actical. Such measures do not have a publicly available formula, lack a straightforward interpretation, and can vary by software implementation or hardware type. To address these problems, we propose the physical activity index (AI), a new metric for summarizing raw tri-axial accelerometry data. We com

Physiological Signatures Derived from Wrist Accelerometry Improve Detection of Isolated REM Sleep Behavior Disorder.

Isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) is the strongest prodromal marker of α-synucleinopathies, but polysomnography is impractical for population-scale screening and questionnaires lack sufficient specificity. Beyond nocturnal movement, recently published models can derive sleep staging and other physiological signatures from raw high-resolution wrist accelerometry alone. Across four cohorts (366 subjects: 95 iRBD, 271 controls; 5,804 nights), we extracted 876 features spanning sleep macrostructure, stage-probability dynamics, motor activity, and cardiorespiratory variation. Factors associated with upper extremity use after stroke: a scoping review of accelerometry studies.

BACKGROUND: A discrepancy between the level of impairment at the upper extremity (UE) and its use in activities of daily life is frequently observed in individuals who have experienced a stroke. Wrist-worn accelerometers allow an objective and valid measure of UE use in everyday life. Accelerometer studies have shown that a wide range of factors beyond UE impairment can influence UE use. This scoping review aims to identify factors associated with UE use and to investigate the influence of different types of accelerometry metrics on these associations. METHOD: A search using CINHAL, Embase, M

Composite activity type and stride-specific energy expenditure estimation model for thigh-worn accelerometry.

BACKGROUND: Accurately measuring energy expenditure during physical activity outside of the laboratory is challenging, especially on a large scale. Thigh-worn accelerometers have gained popularity due to the possibility to accurately detect physical activity types. The use of machine learning techniques for activity classification and energy expenditure prediction may improve accuracy over current methods. Here, we developed a novel composite energy expenditure estimation model by combining an activity classification model with a stride specific energy expenditure model for walking, running, a

Accelerometry daily steps count is associated with overall survival in malignant pleural effusion patients.

AIM: To investigate the association of accelerometry daily step count with 3-year overall survival (OS) in patients with malignant pleural effusion (MPE). METHODS: This is a pooled analysis of four studies in patients with MPE. Activity behaviour was captured using 7-day accelerometry (Actigraph GT3X+) and survival information was collected from medical records. Participants were divided in two groups based on median number of steps: high (n = 81, median of 7509 [interquartile range (IQR): 5699; 9844] steps) and low steps (n = 82, 2940 [IQR: 1676; 3947] steps). Daily sleep and physical activity from accelerometry in adults: Temporal associations and lag effects.

OBJECTIVES: Insufficient sleep is linked to various health issues, while physical activity is a protective measure against chronic diseases. Despite the importance of sleep and physical activity for supporting public health, there remains scant research investigating daily and cumulative associations between objectively measured physical activity and sleep. Understanding the associations of physical activity and sleep behaviors over multiple days may inform the efficacy of interventions to synergistically support both behaviors. METHOD: Data were from the Community of Mine study (N=367 with c

Energy Expenditure Prediction from Accelerometry Data Using Long Short-Term Memory Recurrent Neural Networks.

The accurate estimation of energy expenditure from simple objective accelerometry measurements provides a valuable method for investigating the effect of physical activity (PA) interventions or population surveillance. Methods have been evaluated previously, but none utilize the temporal aspects of the accelerometry data. In this study, we investigated the energy expenditure prediction from acceleration measured at the subjects' hip, wrist, thigh, and back using recurrent neural networks utilizing temporal elements of the data. The acceleration was measured in children (N = 33) performing a st

Criterion validity of wrist accelerometry for assessing energy intake via the intake-balance technique.

BACKGROUND: Intake-balance assessments measure energy intake (EI) by summing energy expenditure (EE) with concurrent change in energy storage (ΔES). Prior work has not examined the validity of such calculations when EE is estimated via open-source techniques for research-grade accelerometry devices. The purpose of this study was to test the criterion validity of accelerometry-based intake-balance methods for a wrist-worn ActiGraph device. METHODS: Healthy adults (n = 24) completed two 14-day measurement periods while wearing an ActiGraph accelerometer on the non-dominant wrist. During each pe

Transition dynamics modeling of pre-trained accelerometry representations for time to diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.

Early identification of Parkinson's disease is critical for timely intervention. Disruptions in sleep architecture and changes in physical activity patterns have been reported years before motor symptom onset, yet prodromal behavioral changes spanning sleep and daytime activity patterns are subtle and difficult to detect with conventional clinical tools. Wearable sensors provide a scalable means of monitoring these behaviors in natural settings, but extracting meaningful, interpretable features from high-frequency, unlabeled time series remains a major challenge. We present an end-to-end frame

Accelerometry is a valid method to distinguish between healthy and 6-OHDA-lesioned parkinsonian rats.

In Parkinson's disease (PD), continuous sensor-based evaluation of motor symptom severity, e.g., using accelerometry, has become an emerging field of interest in clinical research. Continuous symptom monitoring would also be of interest in preclinical disease models; however, such devices are far less established in animal models, most likely due to additional requirements in size, energy consumption, and impairment-free attachment. In contrast, accelerometers manufactured in micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology are promising sensor devices, which allow for space-saving and energ

Accelerometry-derived activity fragmentation as a predictor of brain atrophy and disability progression in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Accelerometry-derived activity fragmentation reflects how frequently active periods are broken by sedentary periods. It has been associated with frailty, mortality, and reduced gait speed in the general population; however, its prognostic significance in multiple sclerosis (MS) remains unknown. METHODS: People with MS (PwMS) wore wrist tri-axial accelerometers at three-month intervals, underwent disability assessments biannually and MRI brain approximately annually. The use of accelerometry to detect heel contact events for use as a sensor in FES assisted walking.

Current sensors for the control of functional electrical stimulation (FES) assisted walking in hemiplegic individuals are not wholly satisfactory, as they are either not implantable or ineffectual in the detection of heel contact events. This study describes the use of an accelerometer placed on the trunk to detect heel contact events of both legs based on the examination of the anterior-posterior horizontal acceleration signal. Four subjects wore an accelerometer over their lumbar spine. Footswitches placed on the sole of one foot recorded the heel contact and heel off times for that foot. Th

Ambulatory accelerometry to quantify involuntary movements and tics in the syndrome of Gilles de la Tourette.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is a chronic neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by recurrent and involuntary tics, in addition to complex behavioral symptoms. Objective quantification of the nonspecific movements in Tourette patients can contribute much to understanding the pathophysiology of this disease. We used three accelerometers to characterize head movement patterns and to objectively quantify head motility in the lateral, sagittal, and transversal planes in 9 Tourette patients and 14 controls during periods of rest, conversation, and watching a videotape with an entertaining progra
