Values-Based Action in Fibromyalgia: Results From a Randomized Pilot of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is a chronic pain condition characterized by pain, fatigue, and nonrestorative sleep. The disruptive symptoms of FMS are associated with reductions in quality of life related to family, intimate relationships, and work. The present study was part of a randomized pilot study of an 8-week Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) intervention compared to education in a sample of 28 women with FMS. The Chronic Pain Values Inventory was administered at baseline, postintervention, and 12 week follow-up. Both groups showed significant improvements in family success, which w

Examination of the core cognitive components of cognitive behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy: an analogue investigation.

We aimed to examine the core elements of cognitive behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy that target distressing negative cognitions, cognitive restructuring (CR) and cognitive defusion (CD), respectively. Participants (N=142) recalled a saddening autobiographical event, identified a distressing thought it triggered, and completed a task that induced rumination on these cognitions. They then completed one of four brief interventions that targeted these emotionally charged cognitions: analogue versions of CR and CD, and two control interventions. The personal negative cogniti

Physiotherapy informed by acceptance and commitment therapy for chronic low back pain: A randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a highly prevalent condition and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Given its complex etiology, there is growing interest in applying the biopsychosocial model to CLBP management in order to address psychological barriers - such as low motivation - that influence pain perception, exercise adherence, and overall treatment outcomes. Physiotherapy-informed Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (PACT) - a third-wave cognitive-behavioral approach - has shown promise in chronic pain management by promoting psychological flexibility and values-based actio

Randomised controlled feasibility trial of online group acceptance and commitment therapy for functional cognitive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Functional cognitive disorder is an increasingly recognised subtype of functional neurological disorder for which treatment options are currently limited. We have developed a brief online group acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)-based intervention. AIMS: To assess the feasibility of conducting a randomised controlled trial of this intervention versus treatment as usual (TAU). METHOD: The study was a parallel-group, single-blind randomised controlled trial, with participants recruited from cognitive neurology, neuropsychiatry and memory clinics in London. Participants were ra

Acceptance and commitment therapy as an adjunct to the MOVE! programme: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: The current study tested the efficacy of an acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) group intervention for disinhibited eating behaviour as an adjunct to the Veterans Affairs MOVE!© weight management programme. METHODS: Veterans (N = 88) with overweight or obesity who completed the MOVE! weight management programme and self-identified as having problems with 'stress-related eating' were randomized to four 2-h weekly ACT sessions or a continued behavioural weight-loss (BWL) intervention. Assessments were completed at baseline, post-treatment and 3- and 6-month follow-up on outcomes

Predictors of participation in a telephone-based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for smoking cessation study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about factors that influence participation in smoking cessation trials among Chinese populations. The aim of this study is to explore the characteristics of individuals who chose to participate and those who chose not to participate in a proactive telephone-based acceptance and commitment therapy program for smoking cessation within a Chinese sample, and to identify predictors of program participation. Understanding the factors that predict participation in smoking cessation trials may allow researchers and healthcare professionals to target their recruitment effort

Feasibility and acceptability of an acceptance and commitment therapy intervention for caregivers of adults with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia (ADRD) report high levels of distress, including symptoms of anxiety and depression, caregiving burden, and existential suffering; however, those with support and healthy coping strategies have less stress and burden. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) aims to foster greater acceptance of internal events while promoting actions aligned with personal values to increase psychological flexibility in the face of challenges. Mindfulness and acceptance and commitment therapy for problematic alcohol use and disorders: an updated rapid review.

We updated systematic reviews for mindfulness and acceptance and commitment therapy for problematic alcohol use and disorders. We found growing evidence mindfulness was associated with reduced alcohol consumption and/or other therapeutic effects and was superior to other treatments under certain conditions. Mindfulness may be valuable for treating comorbidity and offer an alternative to traditional psychosocial interventions.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Weight-Related Difficulties in Overweight and Obese Adults: A Systematic Review.

Multiple studies have investigated the efficacy of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) in improving psychological flexibility among overweight and obese individuals. However, to date, no specific reviews have focused on ACT and weight-related difficulties in this population. This systematic review of the literature aims to identify and assemble all ACT interventions in randomized controlled trials (RCT) that address weight-related difficulties in the treatment of overweight and obese adults. The PRISMA 2020 framework was used for the systematic review, includes manual and computerized data

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Psychosis and Trauma: Investigating Links between Trauma Severity, Attachment and Outcome.

BACKGROUND: Although Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) may be effective for individuals with psychosis and a history of childhood trauma, little is known about predictors of treatment response among such patients. AIMS: The current study examined: (1) whether severity of trauma predicted treatment response, and (2) profiles of patients with regard to their responses to treatment. METHOD: Fifty participants with psychosis and childhood trauma history were recruited and randomized to take part in either eight sessions of group-based ACT, or to be on a waiting list for the ACT group (i.e.

Brief Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Fibromyalgia: Feasibility and Effectiveness of a Replicated Single-Case Design.

OBJECTIVE: Overall, the literature on the effectiveness of psychological treatments in general and those for fibromyalgia in particular has been dominated by research designs that focus on large groups and explore changes on average, so the treatment impact at the individual level remains unclear. In this quasi-experimental, replicated single-case design, we will test the feasibility and effectiveness of a brief acceptance and committed therapy intervention using ecological momentary assessment supported by technology. METHODS: The sample comprised 7 patients (3 in the individual condition an

Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy during Methadone Dose Reduction: Rationale, Treatment Description, and a Case Report.

Many clients who undergo methadone maintenance (MM) treatment for heroin and other opiate dependence prefer abstinence from methadone. Attempts at methadone detoxification are often unsuccessful, however, due to distressing physical as well as psychological symptoms. Outcomes from a MM client who voluntarily participated in an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) - based methadone detoxification program are presented. The program consisted of a 1-month stabilization and 5-month gradual methadone dose reduction period, combined with weekly individual ACT sessions. Urine samples were collecte

Pilot Program Combining Acceptance and Commitment Therapy with Stuttering Modification Therapy for Adults who Stutter: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: The impact of stuttering far exceeds its effects on speech production itself. It includes increased anxiety levels and avoidance of speech situations that may impact the general quality of life. Therefore, psychological treatment methods have been incorporated into speech therapy programs with positive results. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a relatively recent addition to the field of stuttering. In this case report, we present a pilot program of integrating acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) with stuttering modification therapy for adults who stutter. METHOD: Ei

The efficacy of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for depression: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Depression is a pervasive global mental health issue and a leading contributor to elevated suicide rates worldwide. Despite the growing body of research, there is currently a lack of studies synthesizing evidence on the efficacy of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) specifically for patients diagnosed with depression. Therefore, we conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to fill in these gaps. A systematic search of ten databases was conducted and ten randomized clinical trials (RCTs) were included. The findings showed ACT had a significant effect on depressive symptoms (SMD=-0

Acceptance and commitment therapy for episodic migraine: Rationale and design of a pilot randomized controlled trial.

Migraine is a debilitating disorder with limited pharmacological options. Many migraine medications can have intolerable side effects leading patients to seek complementary and integrative health (CIM) approaches for treatment. One option that is growing in popularity and evidence is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a mindfulness-based therapy. The purpose of this paper is to describe how ACT may be an effective modality integrated into the treatment of migraine and to describe the design of a pilot study of ACT for migraine. First, we review the research and the promise of mindfulness

Technology-supported Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for chronic health conditions: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Chronic health conditions (CHCs) are common and associated with functional limitations. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) shows promise in improving functioning, quality of life, and distress across several CHCs. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of technology-supported ACT for CHCs and perform a meta-analysis on functioning and ACT process outcomes. Multiple databases were systematically searched for randomized controlled trials. A total of 20 unique studies with 2,430 randomized participants were included. CHCs addressed in these studies were chronic pain (k

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy-Enhanced Behavior Therapy as An Intervention for Trichotillomania and Excoriation Disorder (Skin Picking): A Review.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)-enhanced behavior therapy (A-EBT) is the most empirically supported treatment of trichotillomania. Support for A-EBT for excoriation disorder is budding. In this article, we review the A-EBT model, including support for targeting psychological inflexibility, as well as the use of traditional behavioral procedures to reduce non-focused behaviors. To date there are 17 studies investigating A-EBT for trichotillomania and skin picking across ages and treatment delivery methods (individual, group, telehealth, and asynchronous web-based delivery). The work has
