Accidents related to sleepiness: review of medical causes and prevention with special reference to Switzerland.

Sleepiness is a major cause of traffic accidents. Our purpose was to review determinants of accidents related to sleepiness and measures to prevent them. We performed a systematic literature review on the topic and studied official accident statistics and legislation regarding medical driving ability in Switzerland. In 1997, 79,178 road traffic accidents, each causing bodily injury or property damage in excess of 500 Swiss francs, occurred in Switzerland. According to official statistics, sleepiness accounted for only 1% of identified causes. However, scientific studies performed in other coun

Efficacy of an Infrared Radiator for Hypothermia Prevention in a Simulated Setup of Entrapped Vehicle Accident Victims.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged extrication of entrapped patients after road traffic accidents increases the risk of sustained hypothermia. Accident-related hypothermia increases mortality in severely injured patients, and prehospital efforts to prevent hypothermia are essential. We evaluated various warming measures regarding their preclinical suitability and efficacy for patient warming, tested in realistically-simulated road traffic accident scenarios under cold ambient conditions in a climate chamber. METHODS: The effects of a chemical warming blanket (CWB), forced-air warming (FAW) device, or infr

[Prevention of venous thrombosis in recent ischaemic cerebrovascular accident: double-blind study with heparin-dihydroergotamine (author's transl)].

In a randomised, double-blind study 5,000 IU heparin-dihydroergotamine mesylate (Dihydergot) or placebo were administered over 14 days to 107 patients with recent ischaemic cerebrovascular accident. The patients were studied daily for recent venous thrombosis in the legs by means of the 125I-fibrinogen test. Thirteen patients died before venous thrombosis had been demonstrated, 13 others were excluded by other causes. Of the 41 patients in the placebo group 23 developed venous thrombosis, but only 11 of the 40 drug-treated patients. Bilateral venous thrombosis occurred in six patients on the p

Accidents of occupational exposure to ionizing radiation in radiology departments: risks, prevention, and management.

Occupational exposure to ionizing radiation in radiology departments is a rare but important concern, given the potential long-term health effects and the regulatory framework surrounding radioprotection. This review analyzes the main risks associated with exposure to X-rays, including cancer, cataracts, radiodermatitis, pregnancy risks, and reduced fertility, as well as the specific contexts in which accidents occur. The majority of significant exposure incidents are reported in interventional radiology, where proximity to the radiation source and prolonged fluoroscopy times increase operator

Rapid demountable platform (RDP)--a device for preventing fall from height accidents.

The prevention of fall from height accidents has long been a popular topic in the field of construction safety. Previous research has indicated one of the potential hazards was induced by the use of steel bracket as scaffold support. While researchers are focusing to improve the existing scaffolding system, this research introduces a newly developed device to minimize fall accidents. The working platform, namely Rapid Demountable Platform (RDP) can be applied across window frames without fixing anchor bolts. Emphasizing on the rapid installation/dismantling, the RDP provides another safer opti

[Injuries, accidents and mortality in epilepsy: a review of its prevalence risk factors and prevention].

Currently, there is intense clinical research into various aspects of the medical risks relating to epilepsy, including total and cause-specific mortality, accidents and injuries in patients with epilepsy and mortality related with seizures. Submersion injuries, motor vehicle accidents, burns, and head injuries are among the most feared epilepsy-related injuries. Published risk factors for injuries include the number of antiepileptic drugs, history of generalized seizures, and seizure frequency. In general, studies focusing on populations with more severe forms of epilepsy tend to report subst

Risk and preventive factors for fatalities in All-terrain Vehicle Accidents in New Zealand.

All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) have been used in agriculture for a few decades now. Yet despite their invaluable contribution to the productivity of the agricultural industry they are associated with a large number of accidents, many of which result in a severe or fatal outcome. The main objective of this study was to identify the risk factors for ATV-related fatal injuries in order to support the design of effective interventions. Using data held by the Department of Labour, the current study analysed 355 cases of serious harm accidents associated with ATVs including 45 fatalities. The findings

Monitoring sleepiness with on-board electrophysiological recordings for preventing sleep-deprived traffic accidents.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is the development and evaluation of efficient neurophysiological signal statistics, which may assess the driver's alertness level and serve as potential indicators of sleepiness in the design of an on-board countermeasure system. METHODS: Multichannel EEG, EOG, EMG, and ECG were recorded from sleep-deprived subjects exposed to real field driving conditions. A number of severe driving errors occurred during the experiments. The analysis was performed in two main dimensions: the macroscopic analysis that estimates the on-going temporal evolution of physio

[Preventing Bathing-Related Accidents without Overemphasizing "Heat Shock": toward Prevention Strategies Centered on Heat-Related Illness].

Japan is reported to have the world's highest per-capita drowning mortality among older adults, and most deaths occur in bathtubs, suggesting that Japan-specific bathing practices contribute to this occurrence. Because fatal bath-related accidents increase during the cold seasons and physiological studies simulating bathing have documented marked blood pressure fluctuations, prevention efforts have traditionally focused on preventing rapid blood pressure changes induced by indoor temperature gradients-the so-called "heat shock." However, it has been reported that cases involving organic diseas
