[Development of Human Vital Signs and Body Posture Monitoring and Positioning Alarm Systems].

In view of the high incidence of malignant diseases such as malignant arrhythmias in the elderly population, accidental injuries such as falls, and the problem of no witnesses when danger occurs, the study developed a human vital signs and body posture monitoring and positioning alarm system. Through the collection and analysis of electrocardiogram (ECG), respiration (RESP) and acceleration (ACC) signals, the system monitors human vital signs and body posture in real time, automatically judges critical states such as malignant arrhythmias and accidental falls on the local device side, and then

Extra-axial haemorrhages in young children with skull fractures: abuse or accident?

OBJECTIVE: Infant and toddler subdural haemorrhages (SDH) are often considered indicative of abuse or major trauma. However, accidental impact events, such as falls, cause contact extra-axial haemorrhages (EAHs). The current study sought to determine frequency and clinical behaviour of EAHs with infant and toddler accidental and abusive skull fractures. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Children aged <4 years with accidental skull fractures and abusive fractures identified by CT at two paediatric tertiary care centres. Clinical data were abstracted by child abuse paediatricians and images were reviewed b

[Falls in the elderly: analysis of potential risk based on observations in 1994-2001].

In medicine a fall is commonly construed as a sudden and totally accidental loss of postural balance, be that whilst walking or pursuing any other physical activities, in result of which a victim falls directly onto the ground, floor, or any other low-sited surface area. Frequency of falls in the elderly breaks down into 33% in the outpatients, 20% in the hospitalised patients and 45% in the nursing home residents. Data regarding the actual frequency of falls often misrepresent the facts, as most falls do not result in severe complications, although frequently enough facilitate development of

Differential diagnosis between 'unexplained' fall and syncopal fall: a difficult or impossible task.

Falls may be accidental (because of slipping, tripping or environmental hazards) or 'unexplained', when there is no apparent cause. Syncope is a transient loss of consciousness (LOC) and, if it occurs when the person is in the upright position, may lead to a fall. The differential diagnosis between 'unexplained' fall and syncopal fall can be difficult, if not impossible, because many patients have retrograde amnesia after syncope, that is they do not remember their prodromal symptoms. Based on the results of many randomized studies, the international guidelines on falls suggest multifactorial

Atrial fibrillation: an independent risk factor for nonaccidental falls in older patients.

BACKGROUND: Nonaccidental falls are often the result of a combination of factors including cardiovascular disorders such as orthostatic hypotension and unspecified cardiac arrhythmias. The objective of this study was to determine if there is an association between atrial fibrillation (AF) and nonaccidental falls. METHODS: We reviewed the records of 442 consecutive patients >65 years old who presented to the Emergency Department at the University of Utah Medical Center with a complaint of fall. RESULTS: Two-hundred eleven patients presented with nonaccidental fall, 231 patients with accidenta

Fatal falls from heights in and around Diyarbakir, Turkey.

Falls from high places, such as from a building, are frequently encountered in suicides, in some accidents, and sometimes in homicides. In this study, we evaluated the demographic data, mortality rates, fall causes, and post-mortem findings of individuals who fell from heights. Our cases were collected retrospectively from the files of the Branch of the Council of Forensic Medicine in Diyarbakir between 1996 and 2001. There were 431 accidental and 53 suicidal deaths due to blunt injury resulting from falls. Of the victims, 188 were female and 296 were male. The average age of the 484 victims w

Accidental deaths occurring in bed: review of cases and proposal of preventive strategies.

The bed is thought to be a safe place, but posses a number of risks that can cause deaths. To identify the causes of accidental death in bed and propose strategies for the prevention of further accidents, we surveyed and analyzed the literature on accidental deaths in bed from Japan and abroad, as well as legal cases related to accidental death in bed in Japan. A search of the medical literature in Japan (1983-2007), abroad (1976-2007), and Japan's legal cases (1989-2007) located 39 cases. The vast majority of accidental deaths in bed occur among infants and elderly individuals with neurologic

A hybrid human fall detection method based on modified YOLOv8s and AlphaPose.

To address the challenges of low detection accuracy of small objects and weak applicability of the multi-person fall action recognition applications, we propose a hybrid fall detection method based on modified YOLOv8s and AlphaPose called HFDMIA-Pose. Firstly, we use the modified Yolov8s as object detector. It uses SPD-Conv to preserve small object features and adds a small object detection layer, while using BCIOU as the loss function. These methods can effectively improve the accuracy of small object detection and significantly reduce the model size. Secondly, we improve the fall recognition

The Groningen Trauma Study. Injury patterns in a Dutch trauma centre.

During the period 1970-1993, 245,251 visits were recorded in the trauma registry of the University Hospital Groningen, The Netherlands. An analysis of injury antecedents revealed five principal causes (ICD-CM): accidental falls (28%), sports and unspecified accident (26%), traffic (19%), cutting and piercing instruments (10%) and violence (4%). The trend analysis across the 24 year period showed that the incidence of injuries due to traffic and accidental falls decreased, while the rate of injuries due to assault increased 2-fold. Within the subgroup of traffic accidents, injuries caused by ca

Identifying the relationship between delirium and falls.

Delirium, which may present as acute fluctuation in arousal and attention and changes in a person's behaviours, can increase the risk of falls, while a fall can increase the risk of developing delirium. There is, therefore, a fundamental relationship between delirium and falls. This article describes the main types of delirium and the challenges associated with recognition of the condition and discusses the relationship between delirium and falls. The article also describes some of the validated tools used to screen patients for delirium and includes two brief case studies to illustrate this i

Imitating Emergencies: Generating Thermal Surveillance Fall Data Using Low-Cost Human-like Dolls.

Outdoor fall detection, in the context of accidents, such as falling from heights or in water, is a research area that has not received as much attention as other automated surveillance areas. Gathering sufficient data for developing deep-learning models for such applications has also proven to be not a straight-forward task. Normally, footage of volunteer people falling is used for providing data, but that can be a complicated and dangerous process. In this paper, we propose an application for thermal images of a low-cost rubber doll falling in a harbor, for simulating real emergencies. We ac

[Quality of care in intensive care units. Retrospective study on long-term patients].

Nursing care must be evaluated in order to determine its effectiveness and identify deficiencies, which makes it possible to introduce corrective measures to optimize quality. The quality of care given to patients in our unit was evaluated with a retrospective analysis of 915 records in the Nursing Care Plan corresponding to 59 patients with a mean ICU stay of 15.5 days. Six areas of care and indicators of deficient practice were identified: orotracheal intubation: accidental disconnection, displacement, obstruction, and pressure sores on lips; arterial catheterization: accidental disconnectio

Accidental traumatic head injury in infants and young children.

This article will discuss accidental head injuries in infants and young children. The first category of injury is the crushing head injury. Static forces applied slowly to the head result in multiple fractures of the skull and contusions and lacerations of the brain resulting from the bone fragments striking the brain. This article will discuss the subject of short falls in young children and the resulting head injuries. Because falls are frequent events in early life, many cases have been collected and many papers written on the subject. Study of these cases is informative about the injuries
