Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii infections have emerged as a serious threat worldwide. As novel agents have yet to be developed, understanding the effectiveness and safety of older antibiotics has become a priority. The purpose of this systematic review was to summarise the available clinical evidence on the use of tetracyclines for the treatment of A. baumannii infections. Ten retrospective studies regarding doxycycline and minocycline for the treatment of 185 A. baumannii infections (of which 65.4% were respiratory infections and 13% were bloodstream infections) in 156 pati

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal mastitis is a rare infection. When it does occur, infants younger than 2 months of age are typically affected and the majority of cases are caused by Staphylococcus aureus. We present the first reported case of neonatal mastitis caused by Acinetobacter baumannii, an unusual organism for this type of infection.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-day-old full-term Caucasian male neonate presented to our emergency room following fever at home and was admitted for routine neonatal sepsis evaluation. After admission, he developed purulent drainage from his right nipple, was diagnosed w

BackgroundAcinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for hospital-acquired infections. A. baumannii epidemics described world-wide were caused by few genotypic clusters of strains. The occurrence of epidemics caused by multi-drug resistant strains assigned to novel genotypes have been reported over the last few years.ResultsIn the present study, we compared whole genome sequences of three A. baumannii strains assigned to genotypes ST2, ST25 and ST78, representative of the most frequent genotypes responsible for epidemics in several Mediterranean hospitals, and four comple

BACKGROUND: Patient-centered communication and trusting relationships are central to effective clinical management for anyone living with chronic illness. For those able to access and continue effective medications, aging with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is now like aging with any chronic illness. Advance Care Planning (ACP) has been a recognized strategy to improve health outcomes for individuals with serious illnesses. Despite its importance, African Americans living with HIV (AAHIV) often experience barriers to ACP, including having lived in a syndemic environment where low healt

The objective of this study was to investigate the role of sulbactam in the treatment of pan-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (PDRAB). We studied 89 patients with PDRAB infection treated with different antibiotic regimens. Group A (n = 39) were treated with carbapenem with sulbactam and group B (n = 30) with second and third generation cephalosporins, antipseudomonas penicillins, or fluoroquinolones with aminoglycosides. We also studied the MICs for 48 PDRAB strains by using antimicrobial agents with and without sulbactam. The clinical outcomes of the 2 groups did not differ significantl

A 35-year-old male with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency was admitted because of right chest (pleuritic) pain, fever, cough with scarce production of blood-tinged sputum, and generalized yellowish discolouration of skin for 2 days. Radiographic examination revealed right lower lobe necrotizing pneumonia. Hypotension, dyspnoea and severe haemolysis was noted the next day. Echo-guided lung aspiration and sputum cultures both grew Acinetobacter baumannii. Antibiotic therapy was started immediately, but fever persisted and abscess formation was noted 1 week later. After aggressi

Acinetobacter anitratus has emerged as one of the common pathogens responsible for postneurosurgical meningitis at the authors' institution. Seven patients with Acinetobacter meningitis were identified during the 4-year period of this study, five of whom acquired organisms susceptible only to imipenem and amikacin. Acinetobacter bacteremia occurred concomitantly in five patients. Despite late institution of therapy as a result either of organism misidentification on Gram stain or of unexpected acquisition of a highly resistant organism, the patients' outcome was favorable after the initiation

The medical records of 48 patients with Acinetobacter calcoaceticus bacteremia over a recent two-year period were reviewed retrospectively to determine the epidemiologic and clinical features. There were 34 males and 14 females with a median age of 51 years. Forty-six of the cases were hospital-acquired. The characteristics of these patients included residence in the intensive care unit, intubation and ventilatory support, preceding antibiotic therapy and intravascular catheterization. In vitro susceptibility testing for the isolated organisms revealed that 32% of these strains were resistant

Acinetobacter species are opportunistic pathogens that possess both intrinsic and acquired drug resistance, as well as the capacity to develop persistent biofilms. Among them, the most important multidrug-resistant species are Acinetobacter baumannii and Acinetobacter nosocomialis. The in silico comparative genomic study has systematically analyzed these two species with emphasis on antimicrobial resistance genes and virulence factors that promote biofilm formation. Both species contain several biofilm-associated genes, such as ompA, pilE, csuA/b, pgaA-D, and the AdeFGH efflux system, which ar

BACKGROUND: Acinetobacter seifertii, a recently identified member of the Acinetobacter calcoaceticus-Acinetobacter baumannii (Acb) complex, has emerged as a cause of severe human infections. It is closely related to Acinetobacter nosocomialis, a major pathogen of the Acb complex. Here, we aimed to explore the clinical and molecular differences between these two species.
METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled 83 adults with A. seifertii bacteremia and 402 adults with A. nosocomialis bacteremia from four medical centers over a 9-year period. Species identification was confirmed using matrix

The treatment of Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) poses significant clinical challenges due to its multidrug/pan-drug resistance. In this study, we isolated a broad-spectrum lytic A. baumannii phage, named P425, from medical wastewater, targeting nine multidrug-resistant A. baumannii (MDRAB) with diverse capsular types. Biological characterization revealed that P425 maintains activity at pH range of 3-12 and temperature range of 4-50 °C. It resists UV irradiation for 20 minutes, and had an optimal multiplicity of infection (OMOI) is 0.00001. The adsorption kinetics showed that P425 ach

Ventriculitis is associated with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunts, and rare microorganisms associated with infection include vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) faecium and Acinetobacter baumannii. Both organisms are known to cause nosocomial infections, and the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains presents a treatment challenge. There is a lack of consensus on antimicrobial agent selection for ventriculitis involving VRE faecium or MDR A. baumannii, which are life-threatening conditions. We present a case of a 59-year-old male presenting with CSF catheter-associated VRE faecium

BACKGROUND: Acinetobacter baumannii is a multidrug-resistant pathogen known for its robust biofilm formation, leading to persistent infections and treatment failure. Traditional antibiotics often struggle to penetrate these biofilms. Cinnamaldehyde, a plant-derived antimicrobial compound, holds potential as an antibiofilm agent. This study investigates its effects on biofilm formation, EPS production, cell surface properties, oxidative stress response, and gene expression in A. baumannii.
METHODS: This study evaluated the antibiofilm activity of cinnamaldehyde using A. baumannii. Biofilm form

BACKGROUND: The vaginal microbiota demonstrates considerable heterogeneity and is shaped by factors such as race, geographic location, and individual variation. Although its central role in maintaining host health is well established, the precise mechanisms through which it contributes to the onset and progression of preterm birth remain incompletely understood and continue to be debated.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize the vaginal microbiota of pregnant women who experienced preterm birth compared with those with full-term pregnancies. Through both in vivo and in vitro experiment

The development of vaccines represents a promising and safe strategy to combat multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) infections. In this study, we designed and evaluated a dendritic cell (DC)-targeting multiepitope peptide-based biomimetic nanovaccine for its immunogenicity and protective efficacy in a murine model. Bioinformatics tools were employed to predict and screen B- and T-cell epitopes derived from the OmpW protein of A. baumannii, followed by immunological validation. The dominant epitopes were sequentially linked using 6-aminocaproic acid to synthesize a m

Acinetobacter baumannii is a common pathogen in hospitals and usually causes bacteremia, pneumonia, meningitis, peritonitis and other diseases. Isolates carried NDM-1 gene can make several antibiotics such as carbapenems and other beta-lactams ineffective. Nowadays, the number of A. baumannii strains carrying NDM-1 has been climbing year by year in recent years. To characterise the transmission of NDM-1 in A. baumannii, we collected 2576 human-derived genomes of A. baumannii strains from NCBI database and found that 186 strains contained NDM-1 gene. The multi-locus sequence typing, phylogeneti

A. baumannii - A. calcoaceticus complex infections are increasingly frequent, especially in intensive care units. Such infections are associated with a mortality that can be as high as 62%. On the other hand, infective endocarditis (IE) is an uncommon disease with notable morbidity and mortality. Even though IE is rarely caused by Acinetobacter species, these infections can be particularly problematic due to increasing antimicrobial resistance. The purpose of this study was to systemically review all published cases of IE by Acinetobacter species in the literature. A systematic review of PubMe

Acinetobacter baumannii is an emerging opportunistic pathogen that has risen to become a serious global threat, prevalent in health care settings and the community, which results in high morbidity and mortality rates. Its alarming expansion of antibiotic resistance is one of the most problematic traits of A. baumannii and as so, this bacterium has been classified as a serious threat and high priority target by the CDC. The most common types of infections induced by this pathogen include pneumonia (both hospital and community acquired), bacteremia, skin and soft tissue, urinary tract infections

Acinetobacter baumannii causes a wide range of severe infections among compromised and injured patients worldwide. The relevance of these infections are, in part, due to the ability of this pathogen to sense and react to environmental and host stress signals, allowing it to persist and disseminate in medical settings and the human host. This review summarizes current knowledge on the roles that environmental and cellular stressors play in the ability of A. baumannii to resist nutrient deprivation, oxidative and nitrosative injury, and even the presence of the commonly used antiseptic ethanol,
