BACKGROUND: Acinetobacter baumannii is gaining importance as a cause of nosocomial infections, but its role in skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI) is not well defined. As a result of the outbreak of A. baumannii occurring in military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan, reports of severe wound infections and SSTI caused by this pathogen are increasing in frequency.
METHODS: We describe four cases of monomicrobial and polymicrobial A. baumannii-associated necrotizing SSTI accompanied by A. baumannii bacteremia and offer a review of similar experiences published in the literature.

BACKGROUND: Acinetobacter baumannii has become a common pathogen causing hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). Although acquiring any nosocomial infection is associated with increased mortality, we do not know if the acquisition of Acinetobacter infection confers a worse prognosis as compared to non-Acinetobacter-related HAI. The aim of the current study is to compare the clinical outcomes of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and central line associated blood stream infections (CLABSIs) caused by A. baumannii with those caused by other bacterial pathogens.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent Acinetobacter infections (AIs) pose significant treatment challenges and contribute to an increased healthcare burden. Limited data exist on recurrent infections in pediatric patients, making it essential to better define their clinical and microbiological characteristics to guide effective management strategies.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients 0-18 years of age hospitalized between 2019 and 2024 with confirmed AI. Recurrent infection was defined as a new episode occurring within 90 days after clinical recovery and documented negative cultures. Clinical, mi

Some long-term hospitalized patients with lung infections exhibit pathogen tolerance. To investigate whether long-term chronic infection can induce tolerance, we constructed a mouse model of pneumonia in which mice were infected once, twice, or three times with Acinetobacter baumannii. The results revealed that the inflammatory factor levels decreased in the lung lavage fluid and that pathological damage to the lung tissue was alleviated in the mice infected three times. Flow cytometry and transcriptome analysis of mouse lung tissue revealed that the expression of genes related to T cell activ

Acinetobacter baumannii is the main causative pathogen of nosocomial infections that causes severe infections in the lungs. In this study, we analyzed the histopathological characteristics of lung infection with two strains of A. baumannii (ATCC 19606 and the clinical isolate TK1090) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO-1 in C3H/HeN mice to evaluate the virulence of A. baumannii. Survival was evaluated over 14 days. At 1, 2, 5, or 14 days postinfection, mice of C3H/HeN were sacrificed, and histopathological analysis of lung specimens was also performed. Histopathological changes and accumulation of

Hepatic hydrothorax, a rare and debilitating complication of cirrhosis, carries high morbidity and mortality. First-line treatment consists of dietary sodium restriction and diuretic therapy. Some patients, mainly those who are refractory to medical management, will require invasive pleural drainage. The authors report the case of a 76-year-old man in a late cirrhotic stage of alcoholic chronic liver disease, presenting with recurrent right-sided hepatic hydrothorax, portal hypertension, hepatosplenomegaly and thrombocytopaenia. After recurrent admissions and complications, the potential for a

Acinetobacter baumannii is one of the most important antibiotic-resistant nosocomial bacteria. We investigated changes in the clinical and molecular epidemiology of A. baumannii over a 10-year period. We compared the data from 2 prospective multicenter cohort studies in Spain, one performed in 2000 (183 patients) and one in 2010 (246 patients), which included consecutive patients infected or colonized by A. baumannii. Molecular typing was performed by repetitive extragenic palindromic polymerase chain reaction (REP-PCR), pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), and multilocus sequence typing (

Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is a leading cause of nosocomial infections as this pathogen has certain attributes that facilitate the subversion of natural defenses of the human body. A. baumannii acquires antibiotic resistance determinants easily and can thrive on both biotic and abiotic surfaces. Different resistance mechanisms or determinants, both transmissible and non-transmissible, have aided in this victory over antibiotics. In addition, the propensity to form biofilms (communities of organism attached to a surface) allows the organism to persist in hospitals on various medical

Acinetobacter baumannii is a common causative agent of hospital-acquired infections and a leading cause of infection in burns patients. Carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii is considered a major public-health threat and has been identified by the World Health Organization as the top priority organism requiring new antimicrobials. The most common mechanism for carbapenem resistance in A. baumannii is via horizontal acquisition of carbapenemase genes. In this study, we sampled 20 A. baumannii isolates from a patient with extensive burns, and characterized the evolution of carbapenem resistance over

BACKGROUND: The emergence of imipenem-nonsusceptible (INS) Acinetobacter baumannii complex has had a great impact on healthcare systems worldwide. Understanding the risk factors related to INS infection is useful for infection control. The risk factors for INS A. baumannii have been well documented; however, the risk factors related to INS Acinetobacter nosocomialis infection lack documentation. The purpose of this study was to identify the risk factors associated with INS A. nosocomialis bacteremia.
METHODS: This retrospective 9-year study included 329 adults with A. nosocomialis bacteremia

OBJECTIVE: We describe the first outbreak of multiple drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (MDR-Ab) in a neonatal intensive care unit in the United States.
DESIGN/METHODS: MDR-Ab was identified in the blood of a 24-week gestation, 7-day-old extremely low birth weight neonate. Multiple samplings of surveillance surface cultures were performed on exposed and nonexposed neonates. Enhanced infection control measures were implemented. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis was performed to determine the genetic relatedness of the MDR-Ab isolates. Medical records were reviewed for all exposed patients.

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) represent one of the most serious complications in medical care, with a substantial global burden. The emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance, particularly among multidrug-resistant organisms such as carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAb), have significantly complicated infection management.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review is to provide an updated perspective on its clinical use and to explore novel therapeutic strategies for combating multidrug-resistant bacterial infections.
METHODS: A narrative review was perform

Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic pathogen associated commonly with healthcare-associated-infections and predominantly involved in diabetic foot infections with virulence factors determining pathogenicity especially in multidrug resistant strains. Therefore, it is of interest to compare virulence factors (pellicle formation and gelatinase activity) between Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) and non-ESBL producing Acinetobacter baumannii isolates derived from diabetic foot ulcer infection (DFI). The isolates were identified using standard microbiological methods and antimicrobial
