Acoustic stimulation of the human round window by laser-induced nonlinear optoacoustics.

The feasibility of low frequency pure tone generation in the inner ear by laser-induced nonlinear optoacoustic effect at the round window was demonstrated in three human cadaveric temporal bones (TB) using an integral pulse density modulation (IPDM). Nanosecond laser pulses with a wavelength in the near-infrared (NIR) region were delivered to the round window niche by an optical fiber with two spherical lenses glued to the end and a viscous gel at the site of the laser focus. Using IPDM, acoustic tones with frequencies between 20 Hz and 1 kHz were generated in the inner ear. The sound pressure

Contralateral acoustic stimulation alters the magnitude and phase of distortion product otoacoustic emissions.

Activation of medial olivocochlear efferents through contralateral acoustic stimulation (CAS) has been shown to modulate distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) level in various ways (enhancement, reduction, or no change). The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of a range of CAS levels on DPOAE fine structure. The 2f(1)-f(2) DPOAE was recorded (f(2)/f(1)=1.22, L(1)=55 dB, and L(2)=40 dB) from eight normal-hearing subjects, using both a frequency-sweep paradigm and a fixed frequency paradigm. Contamination due to the middle ear muscle reflex was avoided by monitoring the m

Fetal acoustic stimulation in early labor and pathological fetal acidemia: a preliminary report.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if a nonreactive response to fetal acoustic stimulation in early labor can predict a significantly higher risk of umbilical arterial pH <7.10 or <7.00. METHODS: Fetal acoustic stimulation was applied to the fetuses of term parturients (gestational age > or =37 weeks) with cervical dilation of < or =5 cm. The responses to stimulation were correlated with cesarean delivery for fetal distress and umbilical arterial pH. Student's t-test, Chi-square, and Fisher exact test were used; P < 0.05 was considered significant. Relative risks (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) w

Effect of low level acoustic stimulation on temporary threshold shift in young humans.

To assess the effect of a low level acoustic stimulation on the susceptibility to noise, young human subjects were exposed to music at 70 dBA for 6 h per day during 9 days (training period). Noise sensitivity was assessed by measuring temporary threshold shift (TTS) induced by 105 dBSPL, 1/3 octave band noise at 2 kHz for 10 min. On the fifth day of the training period, a significant decrease of TTS was observed in the frequency range 3-3.5 kHz, in comparison with the baseline TTS obtained before being trained. As the training continued, the frequency range which showed a significant reduction

The influence of contralateral acoustic stimulation on click-evoked otoacoustic emissions in humans.

Contralateral acoustic stimulation has the effect of reducing the amplitude and shifting the phase of click-evoked OAEs. This effect is thought to be mediated via the medial efferent system and, therefore, the presence of this effect could be used to test the integrity of the neural pathway from one cochlea to the other. With a clinical application in mind, a technique for demonstrating the influence of contralateral acoustic stimulation on click-evoked OAEs was designed to overcome fluctuations in patient and environmental noise. The results of this test on three normal subjects and a patient

Changes of acoustic nerve and cochlear nucleus evoked potentials due to repetitive stimulation.

Evoked potential recordings were studied in the acoustic nerve and cochlear nucleus of adult decerebrate cats as a function of the tone duration (1-1500 msec) and the tone repetition rate (0.5/sec-200/sec). Response decrements due to repetitive tonal stimulation were primarily a function of the inter-tone interval. At inter-tone intervals longer than 100 msec, no response decrements were observed in the acoustic nerve or the cochlear nucleus. With shorter inter-tone intervals, reversible response decrements of identical magnitudes ocurred in both the acoustic nerve and the cochlear nucleus evo

Influence of asymmetric recurrent laryngeal nerve stimulation on vibration, acoustics, and aerodynamics.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Evaluate the influence of asymmetric recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) stimulation on the vibratory phase, acoustics and aerodynamics of phonation. STUDY DESIGN: Basic science study using an in vivo canine model. METHODS: The RLNs were symmetrically and asymmetrically stimulated over eight graded levels to test a range of vocal fold activation conditions from subtle paresis to paralysis. Vibratory phase, fundamental frequency (F0 ), subglottal pressure, and airflow were noted at phonation onset. The evaluations were repeated for three levels of symmetric superior larynge

Application of audible acoustic stimulation to investigate growth responses in three Pleurotus species.

Acoustic stimulation can influence microbial growth and metabolism, yet little is known about its impact on edible mushrooms of the genus Pleurotus. This study evaluated the effects of audible sound waves on yield and fructification in three commercially relevant Pleurotus strains. Substrate blocks of Pleurotus eryngii, P. ostreatus, and P. ostreatus x P. eryngii hybrid (a commercial hybrid strain known as 'Black Pearl') were cultivated under controlled production conditions. Blocks were exposed to sound frequencies of 50 Hz, 100 Hz, 225 Hz, or 750 Hz at 80 dB for 300 s during the primordia st

Acoustic stimulation in pain management: neurobiological mechanisms and clinical applications-a narrative review.

Pain affects over 30% of the global population, with an underlying pathogenesis involving a complex interplay of biopsychosocial factors. Despite the availability of conventional pharmacological and interventional therapies, their clinical utility is frequently constrained by concerns regarding substance misuse, surgical complications, and other adverse sequelae. Acoustic stimulation (AS) has emerged as a promising alternative in pain management, characterized by its non-invasive nature, favorable safety profile, and high cost-effectiveness. However, current literature lacks a comprehensive ev

Computational-Experimental Characterization of Transcranial Magneto-Acoustic Stimulation for Dose-Efficient Neural Activation.

Background/Objectives: Transcranial magneto-acoustic stimulation (TMAS) is an emerging multiphysics neuromodulation modality that introduces magneto-acoustically induced currents into ultrasound-based neural stimulation. However, how this coupled physical input is converted into neuronal recruitment and measurable biological responses remains insufficiently understood. This study aimed to establish a computational-experimental framework for quantifying TMAS-induced neural activation across stimulation dose, spike timing, and calcium-related response domains. Methods: The model combined ultraso

Electric-acoustic stimulation with longer electrodes for potential deterioration in low-frequency hearing.

Background: Electric-acoustic stimulation (EAS) has emerged as a standard treatment for patients with high-frequency hearing loss. EAS is usually performed with shorter electrodes of 16-24 mm in length. As most EAS recipients gradually lose residual acoustic hearing in the implanted ear over time, EAS with longer electrodes without causing significant intra-cochlear damage might be ideal. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate hearing preservation (HP) results after EAS surgery with longer electrodes. Methods: Ten patients (11 ears) with partial deafness that met the indications for

Interaction Between Electric and Acoustic Stimulation Influences Speech Perception in Ipsilateral EAS Users.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine electric-acoustic masking in cochlear implant users with ipsilateral residual hearing and different electrode insertion depths and to investigate the influence on speech reception. The effects of different fitting strategies-meet, overlap, and a newly developed masking adjusted fitting (UNMASKfit)-on speech reception are compared. If electric-acoustic masking has a detrimental effect on speech reception, the individualized UNMASKfit map might be able to reduce masking and thereby enhance speech reception. DESIGN: Fifteen experienced MED-EL Fl

Experimental modulation of mood by acoustic stimulation and its effect on exertional dyspnoea.

We examined the interactions between acoustically driven mood modulation and dyspnoea. Following familiarisation, 18 healthy participants attended three experimental sessions on separate days performing two 5 min treadmill tests with a 30 min interval per session while listening to either a positive, negative or neutral set of standardised International Affective Digitised Sounds (IADS). Participants rated intensity and affective domains of dyspnoea during the first exercise test and mood during the second. Mood valence was significantly higher when listening to positive (mean (95% CI): 6.5 (5

A short latency vestibular evoked potential (VsEP) produced by bone-conducted acoustic stimulation.

In this paper data are presented from an experiment which provides evidence for the existence of a short latency, acoustically evoked potential of probable vestibular origin. The experiment was conducted in two phases using bone-conducted acoustic stimulation. In the first phase subjects were stimulated with 6-ms, 500-Hz tone bursts in order to obtain the threshold V(T) for vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP). It was confirmed that the difference between bone-conducted auditory and acoustic vestibular thresholds was slightly over 30 dB. The estimated threshold was then used as a refer

The effect of fetal acoustic stimulation on fetal swallowing and amniotic fluid index.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of fetal acoustic stimulation on fetal swallowing and amniotic fluid (AF) index in an attempt to understand the potential mechanism for fetal compromise following fetal acoustic stimulation. METHODS: Fetal swallowing movements and AF index were assessed in 90 full-term fetuses before and after fetal acoustic stimulation. Fetal swallowing movements were identified on a video monitor and measured in terms of the percentage of time they occurred during 30 minutes of observation. The fetal heart rate was recorded 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after fetal acou

Responses to rotational stimulation of the horizontal canals from patients with acoustic neuromas.

Studies of eye movement responses to harmonic acceleration in patients with acoustic neuromas and Meniere's disease have demonstrated left-right asymmetries and phase decrements. This study examined the responses from 41 patients with acoustic neuromas. The phase measures and the frequency components of the response (spectral purity) were examined in detail. Results of the study suggests that phase decrements, although they are nonspecific responses of the vestibular system to injury, have different characteristics depending on the location of the lesion. In addition, when the injury is in the
