Topological acoustics and geometric phase sensing for non-destructive localization and characterization of defects.

Ensuring structural reliability in aerospace and advanced manufacturing demands non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques that are both accurate and adaptable. We present a flexible framework based on geometric phase sensing, which captures topological shifts in acoustic fields to characterize internal defects. By integrating broadband excitation with remote sensing methods such as laser Doppler vibrometry, we demonstrate defect localization and tracking using a geometric phase change-index (GPC-I) and extend the method to quantitative pore structure analysis through global geometric phase m

Acoustics and aerodynamic effects following glottal and infraglottal medialization in an excised larynx model.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the impact of the implant's vertical location during Type 1 Thyroplasty (T1T) on acoustics and glottal aerodynamics using excised canine larynx model, providing insights into the optimal technique for treating unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP). METHODS: Measurements were conducted in six excised canine larynges using Silastic implants. Two implant locations, glottal and infraglottal, were tested for each larynx at low and high subglottal pressure levels. Acoustic and intraglottal flow velocity field measurements were taken to assess vocal effici

Effect of classic uvulopalatopharyngoplasty and laser-assisted uvulopalatopharyngoplasty on voice acoustics and speech nasalance.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is a commonly used surgical technique for oropharyngeal reconstruction in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This procedure can be done either through the classic or the laser-assisted uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (LAUP) technique. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of classic UPPP and LAUP on acoustics of voice and speech nasalance, and to compare the effect of each operation on these two domains. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 27 patients with a mean age of 46 years. All patients were diagnosed wit

Airway flow dynamics and voice acoustics after autologous fascia augmentation of paralyzed vocal fold.

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of vocal fold medialization, accomplished by injection of autologous fascia, on airflow dynamics and voice acoustics. Ten patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis were included. Flow-volume spirometry, body plethysmography, and acoustic analysis of voice were performed within 1 week before injection of autologous fascia and 4 to 14 months after operation. Medialization of the paralyzed vocal fold decreased the mean peak inspiratory flow (PIF) from 4.63 L to 4.10 L (p = .012). The acoustic characteristics of the voice improved: the values of j

The physiologic cause of swallowing sounds: answers from heart sounds and vocal tract acoustics.

A hypothetical discussion of the cause of swallowing sounds is presented. It is suggested that the pharynx contains a number of valves and pumps that produce reverberations within the pharynx to generate swallowing sounds. As heart sounds are propagated via vibration of muscles and valves, it is further suggested that an analogy exists between the generation of heart sounds and swallowing sounds. This new theory is known as the cardiac analogy hypothesis. The inability of the current literature to explain the cause of swallowing sounds is seen to limit the diagnostic potential of cervical ausc

Intuitive knowledge of object acoustics enables perceptual separation of physical variables from impact sounds.

Upon hearing objects collide, humans can estimate physical attributes such as material and mass. Although the physics of sound generation is well established, the inverse problem that listeners solve - of inferring physical parameters from sound - remains poorly understood. Classical accounts posit the use of acoustic cues that correlate with physical variables, but do not explain how humans might distinguish multiple concurrent physical causes. To study this problem, we built a probabilistic generative model of impact sounds, combining theoretical acoustics with statistics of object resonance

Influence of Posture, Viscosity, and Neck Circumference on Swallowing Acoustics: A Mixed-Effects Analysis.

Neck-surface swallowing acoustics may enable accessible monitoring of swallowing, yet intensity-derived features can be influenced by both experimental manipulations and anatomical sound transmission. This study aimed to examine the effects of head-neck posture, bolus viscosity, and neck circumference on swallowing-sound duration and uncalibrated mean acoustic intensity recorded using a neck-mounted contact microphone. Sixty healthy young adults (30 female, 30 male; 18-35 years) completed four standardized 10-mL swallows comprising thin-liquid and pudding-thick swallows in neutral and chin-tuc

What can vowel acoustics reveal about the communicative participation of people living with ALS?

Objective: Bulbar dysfunction often diminishes the accuracy and speed of the tongue, lip, and jaw movements necessary for speech production. Vowel acoustic features derived from speech recordings can serve as sensitive markers of articulatory accuracy and movement timing. We examined whether degraded speech caused by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), assessed through vowel acoustic features, was associated with communicative participation restrictions. As a secondary aim, we assessed the association of two global speech characteristics, rate and intelligibility, with vowel features and comm

Newborn Cry Acoustics in the Assessment of Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome Using Machine Learning.

IMPORTANCE: The assessment of opioid withdrawal in the neonate, or neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS), is problematic because current assessment methods are based on subjective observer ratings. Crying is a distinctive component of NOWS assessment tools and can be measured objectively using acoustic analysis. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of using newborn cry acoustics (acoustics referring to the physical properties of sound) as an objective biobehavioral marker of NOWS. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective controlled cohort study assessed whether acoustic ana

Dependence of phonation threshold pressure on vocal tract acoustics and vocal fold tissue mechanics.

Analytical and computer simulation studies have shown that the acoustic impedance of the vocal tract as well as the viscoelastic properties of vocal fold tissues are critical for determining the dynamics and the energy transfer mechanism of vocal fold oscillation. In the present study, a linear, small-amplitude oscillation theory was revised by taking into account the propagation of a mucosal wave and the inertive reactance (inertance) of the supraglottal vocal tract as the major energy transfer mechanisms for flow-induced self-oscillation of the vocal fold. Specifically, analytical results pr

When is an acoustic neuroma not an acoustic neuroma? Pitfalls for radiosurgeons.

INTRODUCTION: Because acoustic neuroma (AN), also termed vestibular schwannoma, constitutes by far the commonest intracranial schwannoma and cerebello-pontine angle (CPA) tumour, there is a risk of overlooking rarer alternative diagnoses with similar clinical and/or radiological features. The purpose of this article is to highlight to radiosurgeons the potentially serious implications of this problem through illustrative case studies. METHODS: Our linac stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) technique has been previously described, with stereotactic headring fixation and treatment delivered via cone

Discrete Wavelet Transformation for the Sensitive Detection of Ultrashort Radiation Pulse with Radiation-induced Acoustics.

Radiation-induced acoustics (RIA) shows promise in advancing radiological imaging and radiotherapy dosimetry methods. However, RIA signals often require extensive averaging to achieve reasonable signal-to-noise ratios, which increases patient radiation exposure and limits real-time applications. Therefore, this paper proposes a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) based filtering approach to denoise the RIA signals and avoid extensive averaging. The algorithm was benchmarked against low-pass filters and tested on various types of RIA sources, including low-energy X-rays, high-energy X-rays, and pr

The Music of Silence: Part I: Responses to Musical Imagery Encode Melodic Expectations and Acoustics.

Musical imagery is the voluntary internal hearing of music in the mind without the need for physical action or external stimulation. Numerous studies have already revealed brain areas activated during imagery. However, it remains unclear to what extent imagined music responses preserve the detailed temporal dynamics of the acoustic stimulus envelope and, crucially, whether melodic expectations play any role in modulating responses to imagined music, as they prominently do during listening. These modulations are important as they reflect aspects of the human musical experience, such as its acqu

Consonant Acoustics in Parkinson's Disease and Multiple Sclerosis: Comparison of Clear and Loud Speaking Conditions.

PURPOSE: The impact of clear speech or an increased vocal intensity on consonant spectra was investigated for speakers with mild dysarthria secondary to multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease and healthy controls. METHOD: Sentences were read in habitual, clear, and loud conditions. Spectral moment coefficients were obtained for word-initial and word-medial /s/, /ʃ/, /t/, and /k/. Global production differences among conditions were confirmed with measures of vocal intensity and articulation rate. RESULTS: Static or slice-in-time first moments (M1) for loud differed most frequently from hab

A theoretical study of the effects of various laryngeal configurations on the acoustics of phonation.

Simulation of glottal volume flow and vocal fold tissue movement was accomplished by numerical solution of a time-dependent boundary value problem, in which nonuniform, orthotropic, linear, incompressible vocal fold tissue media were surrounded by irregularly shaped boundaries, which were either fixed or subject to aerodynamic stresses. Spatial nonuniformity of the tissues was of the layered type, including a mucosal layer, a ligamental layer, and muscular layers. Orthotropy was required to stabilized the vocal folds longitudinally and to accomodate large variations in muscular stress. Incompr

Acoustic shock.

Acoustic shock is a recently recognised clinical entity: following an abrupt, intense and unanticipated acoustic stimulus, usually delivered by a telephone handset or headset, some individuals report a symptom cluster that includes otalgia, altered hearing, aural fullness, imbalance, tinnitus, dislike or even fear of loud noises, and anxiety and/or depression. Symptoms start shortly after the triggering acoustic incident and can be short-lived or can last for a considerable time. If persistent, the condition can lead to significant disability. Proposed mechanisms include involvement of the ten
