Restlessness in Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Using Actigraphy to Measure Physiological Reactions to Threat.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is characterized by excessive, uncontrollable worry accompanied by symptoms of physiological arousal. Although individuals with GAD report greater subjective arousal than healthy individuals, they show equivalent or even attenuated physiological reactions to threat. This may result from using physiological measures better suited to fear than anxiety. To test this possibility, 102 adults with and without GAD were assessed for restlessness, a core physiological symptom of GAD. They were exposed to an in vivo threat task designed to elicit anxiety in the laborat

Patient-Generated Actigraphy Data as a Novel Outcomes Instrument in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Currently, we lack objective measures to quantify outcomes in carpal tunnel syndrome. Instead, surgeons rely on patient-reported outcomes measures (PROMs) to assess the effect of carpal tunnel release (CTR). We assessed the validity and reliability of wearable activity monitors to objectively characterize the functional and sleep impact of CTR. We hypothesized that actigraphy could detect changes in sleep and activity and would demonstrate short-term impairment due the operative procedure. METHODS: This pilot, prospective, cohort study compared validated PROMS with actigraphy data

An actigraphy study investigating sleep in bipolar I patients, unaffected siblings and controls.

OBJECTIVES: Disturbances in sleep and waking patterns are highly prevalent during mood episodes in bipolar disorder. The question remains whether these disturbances persist during phases of euthymia and whether they are heritable traits of bipolar disorder. The current study investigates objective sleep measures in a large sample of bipolar I patients, non-affected siblings and controls. METHODS: A total of 107 bipolar disorder I patients, 74 non-affected siblings, and 80 controls were included. Sleep was measured with actigraphy over the course of 14 days. Seven sleep parameters were analyze

Cross-sectional associations of actigraphy-assessed sleep with dietary outcomes in emerging adults.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Emerging adults (~18-28 years of age) have a high prevalence of poor sleeping habits and poor diet quality; however, little is known on whether these poor sleeping habits are associated with dietary outcomes in this age group. This study assessed associations between actigraphy-based sleep with energy intake (EI), overall diet quality, and measures of meal timing in emerging adults. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Data on 135 emerging adults (age = 19.4 ± 1.3 years; body mass index (BMI) = 26.5 ± 6.9 kg/m2; 58% female; 65% White) from the RIGHT Track Health project were used. Measure

Validating CircaCP: a generic sleep-wake cycle detection algorithm for unlabelled actigraphy data.

Sleep-wake (SW) cycle detection is a key step for extracting temporal sleep metrics from actigraphy. Various supervised learning algorithms have been developed, yet their generalizability from sensor to sensor or study to study is questionable. In this paper, we detail and validate an unsupervised algorithm-CircaCP-for detecting SW cycles from actigraphy. It first uses a robust cosinor model to estimate circadian rhythm, then searches for a single change point (CP) within each circadian cycle. Using CircaCP, we estimated sleep/wake onset times (S/WOTs) from 2125 individuals' data in the MESA s

Diary- and actigraphy-estimated nighttime sleep during the perinatal period: A multimethod study.

Accurate estimation of perinatal sleep is important for informing future research and multigenerational health interventions. We compared diary- and actigraphy-estimated sleep parameters during pregnancy and postpartum. We informed our interpretation of these analyses with participants' feedback about these sleep estimation methods. This preregistered study ( https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/UZFRD ) included 92 English-speaking, women-identified birthing parents who completed sleep diaries and wore wrist actigraphs for 7 days during the 3rd trimester of pregnancy, 6 weeks postpartum, and 16 wee

The impact of actigraphy parameter choices on sleep estimates in one-month-old infants.

INTRODUCTION: Actigraphy is a non-invasive method of recording sleep-wake cycles. Accurate detection depends on the choice of algorithm parameters, particularly the time window and activity threshold. This study aims to compare different combination of these parameters for estimating total sleep duration and the number of sleep bouts in one-month-old infants. METHODS: Forty-nine breastfed infants (aged 24.9 ± 3.6 days) were monitored at home for seven days. Sleep was recorded using an actigraph (MotionWatch8). Raw 60-s epochs were cross-checked with parental sleep report to correct artefactua

Sleep and circadian parameters in Behçet's syndrome: a comparative analysis using actigraphy and questionnaires.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent in Behçet syndrome (BS) patients. Within this population, sleep disturbances are frequently associated with active disease and comorbid fibromyalgia. However, possible sleep impairments in BS patients without these conditions remain poorly explored, along with BS patients' obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) risk and circadian rhythm preferences. We aimed to address these research gaps through a cross-sectional study comparing sleep and circadian parameters between BS patients, with or without active disease and comorbid fibromyalgia, and

Comparison of actigraphy immobility rules with polysomnographic sleep onset latency in children and adolescents.

PURPOSE: While actigraphy has gained popularity in pediatric sleep research, questions remain about the validity of actigraphy as an estimate of sleep-wake patterns. In particular, there is little consistency in the field in terms of scoring rules used to determine sleep onset latency. The purpose of this study was to evaluate different criteria of immobility as a measure of sleep onset latency in children and adolescents. METHODS: Ninety-five youth (ages 3-17 years, 46 % male) wore both the Ambulatory Monitoring Inc. Motionlogger Sleep Watch (AMI) and the Philips Respironics Mini-Mitter Acti

Using actigraphy to evaluate physical activity in patients with pleural effusion: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Malignant pleural effusions (MPEs) are common in cancer patients and significantly impair physical activity. Although symptom relief is the primary treatment goal, the extent of activity limitation and the effectiveness of interventions remain unclear. We used actigraphy to assess the impact of thoracentesis on activity level. The primary objective was to evaluate the association between physical activity (via ActiGraph), quality of life [Short Form 6-Dimension index (SF-6D) utility score], and dyspnea (Borg scale) at weeks 1 and 2 following thoracentesis. METHODS: We conducted a

Is self-reported daylight exposure reliable? A validation study with actigraphy in urban environments.

Daylight exposure is an environmental determinant of human health, yet measuring real-world exposure at scale remains a major challenge. Large population studies frequently rely on self-reported time spent outdoors as a proxy for daylight exposure, although the validity of this measure remains uncertain. We evaluated the agreement between daily self-reported outdoor daylight exposure and objective light measurements obtained from wearable sensors and investigated whether depressive symptoms influence this agreement. A total of 172 adults living in two Brazilian metropolitan regions were monito

Trajectories of sleep disturbances in the subacute phase after stroke: a longitudinal actigraphy study.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances are common after stroke and may negatively impact recovery and quality of life. However, monitoring sleep parameters over time with objective measures remains underreported. OBJECTIVE: To investigate longitudinal changes in actigraphy-derived sleep parameters from the subacute to later stages after stroke. METHODS: This longitudinal observational study included 18 individuals with stroke who completed seven-day wrist-actigraphy monitoring at baseline and at the most distal valid follow-up assessment obtained more than three months after stroke. The two ends of the spectrum: comparing chronic schizophrenia and premorbid latent schizotypy by actigraphy.

Motor activity alterations are key symptoms of psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia. Actigraphy, a non-invasive monitoring method, shows promise in early identification. This study characterizes Positive Schizotypy Factor (PSF) and Chronic Schizophrenia (CS) groups using actigraphic data from two databases. At Hauke Land University Hospital, data from patients with chronic schizophrenia were collected; separately, at the University of Szeged, healthy university students were recruited and screened for PSF tendencies toward schizotypy. Several types of features are extracted from both datas

A comparison of agreement between actigraphy and polysomnography for assessing sleep during posttraumatic amnesia.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Sleep disturbance often emerges in the early recovery phase following a moderate to severe traumatic brain injury, known as posttraumatic amnesia. Actigraphy is commonly employed to assess sleep, as it is assumed that patients in posttraumatic amnesia (who display confusion, restlessness, and agitation) would better tolerate this measure over gold-standard polysomnography (PSG). This study evaluated the agreement between PSG and actigraphy for determining (sleep/wake time, sleep efficiency, sleep latency, and awakenings) in patients experiencing posttraumatic amnesia. It also

Accuracy of Actigraphy Compared to Concomitant Ambulatory Polysomnography in Narcolepsy and Other Sleep Disorders.

Actigraphy provides longitudinal sleep data over multiple nights. It is a less expensive and less cumbersome method for measuring sleep than polysomnography. Studies assessing accuracy of actigraphy compared to ambulatory polysomnography in different sleep-disordered patients are rare. We aimed to compare the concordance between these methods in clinical setting. We included 290 clinical measurements of 281 sleep laboratory patients (mean age 37.9 years, 182 female). Concomitant ambulatory polysomnography and actigraphy were analyzed to determine the agreement in patients with obstructive slee
