Brain abscess caused by Actinomyces turicensis in a non-immunocompromised adult patient: a case report and systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Actinomyces turicensis is rarely responsible of clinically relevant infections in human. Infection is often misdiagnosed as malignancy, tuberculosis, or nocardiosis, therefore delaying the correct identification and treatment. Here we report a case of a 55-year-old immunocompetent adult with brain abscess caused by A. turicensis. A systematic review of A. turicensis infections was performed. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The databases MEDLINE, Emb

Clinical endometritis with Trueperella pyogenes reduces reproductive performance and milk production in dairy cows.

The aim of this study was to identify the impact of Trueperella pyogenes in cows with clinical endometritis (CE) on reproductive performance and milk production in affected cows. In total, 230 lactating Holstein dairy cows from six commercial dairy herds were sampled once between 28 and 33 days post-partum. Cows included in the present study did not receive antibiotic or anti-inflammatory treatments prior to the experimental period. Clinical endometritis (CE) was characterized as cow with vaginal mucus score = 3 (>50% of purulent vaginal discharge) and >18% polymorphonuclear neutrophilic leuko

Trueperella pyogenes isolated from a brain abscess of an adult roebuck (Capreolus capreolus).

The present study was designed to characterize phenotypically and genotypically a Trueperella pyogenes strain isolated from a brain abscess of an adult roebuck (Capreolus capreolus). The species identity could be confirmed by phenotypical investigations, by MALDI-TOF MS analysis, and by sequencing the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene, the 16S-23S rRNA intergenic spacer region (ISR); by sequencing the target genes rpoB, gap, and tuf; and by detection of T. pyogenes chaperonin-encoding gene cpn60 with a previously developed loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay. The T. pyogenes strain

Production of menaquinones by intestinal anaerobes.

Ninety intestinal organisms (71 isolates from fecal samples of neutropenic patients with cancer or from various sites in patients with intraabdominal infections and 19 control strains) were examined by reverse-phase thin-layer chromatography for their ability to produce menaquinones in vitro. Menaquinones were found in all of 24 organisms of the Bacteroides fragilis group. Two other Bacteroides species, Bacteroides disiens and Bacteroides bivius, also produced menaquinones. A single isolate of Bacteroides species lacked menaquinones. These constituents were found in all of five strains of Esch

Special methodological problems in antibiotic susceptibility testing of fermentative actinomycetes.

Knowledge on the antibiotic suceptibility of pathogenic fermentative actinomycetes is still fragmentary and contradictory, which is one reason why even today the chemotherapy of human actinomycosis may still present problems. Complete and reliable data on the in vitro sensitivity of these pathogens can be obtained, however, when standardized and specially adapted methods of susceptibility testing are employed. Special adaptation should cover the general technique of in vitro testing, as well as the choice of test media, the preparation of inocula, incubation methods and method of reading resul

Causal relationship between gut microbiota and diabetes based on Mendelian randomization.

OBJECTIVES: The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in the pathophysiology of various types of diabetes. However, the causal relationship between them has yet to be systematically elucidated. This study aims to explore the potential causal associations between gut microbiota and diabetes using a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis, based on multiple taxonomic levels. METHODS: Eligible instrumental variables were extracted from the selected genome-wide association study (GWAS) data on gut microbiota. These were combined with GWAS datasets on type 1 diabetes (T1D), type 2 diabetes

Oropharyngeal Microbiota Associated with Sore Throat in Acute Upper Respiratory Tract Infections.

Acute upper respiratory tract infections (AURI) can lead to an imbalance in the oropharyngeal microbiome. Specific bacteria may be responsible for a sore throat. We divided 278 AURI patients from outpatient clinics in China into sore throat (ST) and non-sore throat (NST) groups. Then, we performed 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) gene sequencing on throat swab samples of all patients. And explore whether there are compositional and functional differences between the two groups of microorganisms, and conduct Sparse Correlations for Compositional Data (SparCC) and machine learning analysis.

Combined Prokaryotic Transcriptomics and Proteomics Analysis of Clinical Trueperella pyogenes Isolates with Distinctive Cytotoxicity.

Trueperella pyogenes is a widely distributed opportunistic pathogenic bacterium that can infect livestock, wildlife, community animals, and humans, resulting in suppurative infection of tissue and organ mucosa, including pneumonia, liver abscessation, mastitis, metritis, endocarditis, and osteoarthritis. TP1804 and TP1808 were isolated from the uterine lavage fluid of cows with endometritis. This study analyzed the prokaryotic transcriptomics and proteomics of two strains of T. pyogenes with similar growth curves but different cytotoxicity. Studying the metabolic mechanisms of these differenti

PknB and STP as potential targets of luteolin in combating Trueperella pyogenes infections.

Trueperella pyogenes (T. pyogenes) is a significant opportunistic pathogen that causes suppurative infection in many animals, as well as humans. Considering the strong drug resistance of T. pyogenes, the development of novel antibacterial drugs and drug targets to combat infections is necessary. Serine/threonine protein kinases (STKs) and serine/threonine phosphatases (STPs) play pivotal roles in the physiological processes, pathogenesis, and resistance of several important bacterial pathogens, indicating their potential as antimicrobial drug targets. In this study, we aimed to investigate the

Trueperella pyogenes pharyngitis in an immunocompetent 40-year-old man.

A 40-year-old man presented to his primary care physician with a constellation of systemic symptoms and new biofilm forming along his upper airway. He had brought home a deer 10 days prior from a day of hunting, and discovered green purulent material oozing from the entrance/exit wounds. The patient smokes cigarettes and did not use any protective equipment or wash his hands between dressing the deer and smoking. Several days following exposure, he became increasingly short of breath, fatigued, constipated and developed a cough productive of orange sputum. Speaking with state wildlife biologis

Actinobaculum bacteremia: a report of 12 cases.

Actinobaculum species are anaerobic Gram-positive rods that have previously been associated with urinary tract infection (UTI) in the elderly. We report 12 patients with Actinobaculum bacteremia. Only 40% of blood cultures were clinically considered significant by the treating physicians, but most patients were treated for UTI, suggesting a possible urinary source of bacteremia. Clinicians should be aware of the pathogenic potential of Actinobaculum spp.

Rothia dentocariosa endocarditis.

Despite its presence normally in the mouth, R dentocariosa appears rarely to cause infection outside the oral cavity. There is no doubt, however, as additional reports accumulate, that this organism should be recognized as having the ability to cause a serious illness in humans. In addition, in vivo experience seems to suggest that a penicillin regimen should remain first-line therapy for this infection, with the efficacy of other agents remaining unproved.

Demonstration of Actinomyces and Arachnia species in cervicovaginal smears by direct staining with species-specific fluorescent-antibody conjugate.

For direct observation of microaerophilic actinomycetes by fluorescent antibody, a procedure was developed in which pepsin treatment and rhodamine conjugate of normal serum were used to reduce nonspecific staining in cervicovaginal smears. Actinomyces israelii, Actinomyces naeslundii, and Arachnia propionica were observed in cervicovaginal smears from women who did use and who did not use an intrauterine contraceptive device. A. israelii was found more commonly in women with an intrauterine contraceptive device, but no evidence was obtained that the use of an intrauterine contraceptive device

Microbiological Characterization of Actinotignum schaalii Strains Causing Invasive Infections during a Multiyear Period in a Large Canadian Health Care Region.

Actinotignum schaalii is an underrecognized Gram-positive bacillus that is associated with urinary tract infections and cutaneous abscesses. The role of A. schaalii in invasive infections continues to be unappreciated because the bacteria can be isolated from a diverse spectrum of clinical specimens, ranging from being a single pathogen in urine and blood cultures to being deemed a colonizer in polymicrobial anaerobic cultures of sterile fluids and tissues. We conducted a microbiological analysis of clinical isolates obtained from 2012 through 2019. A total of 86 isolates were analyzed; 37 (43
