This literature review addressed wearable sensor systems to monitor motor symptoms in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) during activities of daily living (ADLs). Specifically, progress in monitoring tremor, freezing of gait, dyskinesia, bradykinesia, and hypokinesia was reviewed. Twenty-seven studies were found that met the criteria of measuring symptoms in a home or home-like setting, with some studies examining multiple motor disorders. Accelerometers, gyroscopes, and electromyography sensors were included, with some studies using more than one type of sensor. Five studies measured t

BACKGROUND: Charcot-Marie-Tooth 1A (CMT1A) patients show a reduction of spontaneous activities of daily living measured by means of questionnaires or pedometers, which are quite inaccurate compared to recent measurement techniques.
AIM: The study aimed at quantifying daily living activities in CMT1A patients by means of inertial sensors, which give information not only on the amount but also on the intensity of these activities.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Time and count (amount), and velocity and power (intensity) of 24 h daily living activities were measured in eight patients (20-48 years; Bart

This study aimed to identify the level of activities of daily living (ADLs) of community-dwelling older adults living with dementia, factors affecting ADLs, and changes in ADLs. Data on 186 community-dwelling older adults with dementia in Korea were analyzed, of which 63 were followed up after 12 months to determine the changes in ADLs and their influencing factors. The mean ADLs score of 10.24±3.52 indicated dependency in performing ADLs, especially using the toilet (t = 2.20, p = .031) and bowel/bladder control (t = 2.50, p = .015), which worsened significantly after 1 year. Hemiplegia severely impairs patients' abilities to perform activities of daily living (ADL), thus affecting their overall quality of life and independence. Often caused by stroke or other forms of brain injury, hemiparesis causes long-term impairment of upper and lower limb function, hindering the patient's ability to manage self-care. With advances in modern rehabilitation medicine, emerging therapeutic interventions such as electrophysiological feedback, virtual reality, and robot-assisted therapy are increasingly being applied to the rehabilitation of hemiplegic patients. These intervention

PURPOSE: As the older adult population rise globally, technologies to monitoring activities of daily living (ADL) may have a role in supporting aging in place for older adults. The objective of this systematic literature review was to study the scope, diversity and readiness of technologies developed to monitor ADL in older adults.
METHODS: We systematically searched two scientific databases (CINAHL and IEEE), following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We included studies on technologies used to monitor older adults' ADL in the home but e

OBJECTIVE: To study awareness of problems with one's own Activities of Daily Living (ADL) following stroke by means of a novel instrument-the Visual-Analogue Test for Anosognosia for Activities of Daily Living (VATA-ADL).
METHODS: The new test overcomes some of the methodological problems of traditional structured interviews and self-rating questionnaires. In particular, to account for possible verbal communication difficulties, each question is illustrated by a drawing and a 4-point visual-analogue Likert scale. The patient's self-rating is compared with that given by informants (personal or

PURPOSE: There have been calls for more knowledge of activities of daily living (ADL) performance in order to address interventions in pulmonary rehabilitation effectively. Everyday technology (ET) has become an integrated dimension of ADL, impacting the ways in which ADL is performed. To improve everyday functioning and quality of life, the use of ADL and ET use needs to be evaluated and addressed effectively in interventions. Therefore, the aim of this study was twofold: 1) to explore the quality of ADL performance, and 2) to investigate the relationship between observation and self-reported

OBJECTIVE: To assess relations between discrete visual perceptual functions commonly affected in patients with neurodegenerative dementia and the performance of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL).
BACKGROUND: Neuropsychologic measures are often used to predict IADL performances in dementia patients. Prior studies have focused on the contribution of higher-level memory and executive deficits to IADL. The relation between visuoperceptual dysfunction and IADL has not been studied systematically.
METHODS: Thirty-five elderly patients with neurodegenerative disorders, most diagnosed w

Range of motion (ROM) of the hip joint after total hip arthroplasty (THA) could be increased by using a larger prosthetic femoral head, but it is not known whether the activities of daily living (ADL) are influenced by THA with different head sizes. Our objective was to compare postoperative ADL in patients who underwent THA using a head diameter of 26 mm or 32 mm. We assessed the range of motion and the mode of ADL after cementless primary THA. Comparison was performed between 25 joints of 24 patients who underwent THA with a 26-mm femoral head (26-mm group) and 24 joints of 20 patients with

INTRODUCTION: Unadopted intrinsic capacity (U-IC) may be an early indicator of loss of independence, reflecting the gap between intrinsic abilities and actual engagement in daily activities. Impairments in instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) are central to this construct but are usually assessed subjectively. We developed and evaluated a remote patient monitoring solution that operationalizes U-IC by combining objective measures of mobility, IADL engagement, frailty, and patient-reported outcomes, and tested its ability to identify older adults with cognitive impairment and fallers

The long-term goal of this research is to automatically, remotely, and noninvasively identify Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) using muscle activity at the wrist. Alzheimer's Dementia is a widespread condition affecting patients' memory and ability to care for themselves. A wrist-worn device capable of monitoring precise ADLs could increase patient independence and provide caretakers with detailed information regarding the patient's wellbeing. Here, we investigate the use of an intermediate hand gesture classifying algorithm to predict ADLs using wrist electromyography (EMG). We show that pre

This study aimed to clarify the current status of motor function, activities of daily living (ADL), and instrumental ADL (IADL) in hemophilia patients with HIV infection due to treatment with non-heat-treated blood products as they now enter middle and old age. Participants were 70 such patients (mean age, 52.1 years), and their range of motion (ROM), muscle strength, extremity circumference, walking speed, ADL, and IADL were evaluated at checkups of motor function, ADL, and IADL that were held during patients' association meetings. Results showed that ROM was limited in all joints. Ankle dors

Scientists use latent class (LC) models to identify subgroups in heterogeneous data. LC models reduce an item set to a latent variable and estimate measurement error. Researchers typically use unrestricted LC models, which have many measurement estimates, yet scientific interest primarily concerns the classes. We present highly restricted LC measurement models as an alternate method of operationalization. MACREM (Many Classes, Restricted Measurement) models have a larger number of latent classes than a typical unrestricted model, but many fewer measurement estimates. Goals of this approach inc
