The feasibility and efficacy of perioperative auricular acupuncture technique via intradermal needle buried for postoperative movement-evoked pain after open radical gastrectomy: A randomized controlled pilot trial.

INTRODUCTION: Auricular acupuncture is widely used in the treatment of pain. Recently, the most commonly used method of auricular acupuncture is to embed an intradermal needle into the skin to enhance analgesia through continuous stimulation. We aimed to explore the efficacy and feasibility of this form of auricular acupuncture in the treatment of postoperative movement-evoked pain. METHODS: This single-blind randomized controlled pilot trial was conducted between 23/8/2019 and 10/1/2020. Forty patients were recruited and randomised to either the control group (n = 20) or the experimental gro

A systematic review of pre-operative and intra-operative acupuncture in total hip and knee arthroplasty.

OBJECTIVE: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are common elective surgical procedures that are often associated with significant post-operative pain, commonly leading to opioid use. Acupuncture has been studied as a non-invasive approach to alleviate post-operative pain and reduce opioid consumption. Our aim was to review the literature to assess the efficacy of pre-operative and intra-operative acupuncture as an analgesic adjunct for arthroplasty patients. METHODS: This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysi

Acupuncture for radicular pain: a review of analgesic mechanism.

Radicular pain, a common and complex form of neuropathic pain, presents significant challenges in treatment. Acupuncture, a therapy originating from ancient traditional Chinese medicine and widely utilized for various pain types, including radicular pain, has shown promising outcomes in the management of lumbar radicular pain, cervical radicular pain, and radicular pain due to spinal stenosis. Despite its efficacy, the exact mechanisms through which acupuncture achieves analgesia are not fully elucidated and are the subject of ongoing research. This review sheds light on the current understand

[Beyond the placebo effect: exploring the mast cell-dependent analgesic effect of shallow needling control].

Based on the distribution characteristics of mast cells and existing mechanistic evidence, the study explores the potential biological effects of shallow needling control (sham-acupuncture). Regarding cellular distribution, mast cells exhibit a physiological characteristic of dense distribution in both the dermis and subcutaneous tissue, predominantly in the distal regions, and show a higher density in acupoint areas compared with non-acupoint areas. At the puncture site, shallow needling primarily targets the dermis and the superficial subcutaneous tissue, with these two layers overlapping an

Pharmacology of enkephalinase inhibitors: animal and human studies.

We have shown that a number of compounds which inhibit the degradation of met-enkephalin can produce naloxone-reversible analgesia in mice. These compounds also potentiate the analgesia produced by acupuncture, foot shock, and transcutaneous nerve stimulation in animals and humans. The potency of their effectiveness as analgesics or potentiators parallels their potency as inhibitors of mouse brain enkephalinase. D-Phenylalanine (DPA), one of these enkephalinase inhibitors, has been used successfully for the management of chronic intractable pain in humans and to potentiate the treatment of man

Predicting placebo analgesia responses in clinical trials: where to look next? A meta-analysis of individual patient data.

Estimating the magnitude of placebo responses across pharmacological and nonpharmacological trials is important for understanding their influence on trial outcomes. Yet, the extent to which more intense placebo interventions like sham acupuncture yield larger analgesic responses than placebo pills, and the factors predicting these responses, remain unclear. This meta-analysis investigated the magnitude and predictors of placebo analgesia responses in pharmacological vs acupuncture trials. Analyses included individual patient data from the placebo arm of 11 randomized controlled trials (RCTs):

[Analysis on the superiority of compound acupuncture anesthesia for thyroid ablation].

In the present paper, the authors compare the fits and unfit of different anesthetic methods for thyroid ablation and try to find a better one for it according to their own clinical practice and other scholars' experience. Results indicate that any anesthetic method has its own advantages and disadvantages, while compound acupuncture anesthesia for thyroid surgery is of prominent preponderance not only in the analgesic effect but also in fewer side-effects and less physiological interference. Thus, compound acupuncture anesthesia is a reliable and better anesthetic method for thyroid operation

[A review of recent researches on correlation between ATP and acupuncture efficacies].

It has been documented that adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a multifunctional nucleoside triphosphate used in cells, including chemical energy transportation, extra- and intracellular signaling, cell structure maintaining, DNA and RNA synthesis, etc. In the present paper, the authors reviewed studies on the involvement of ATP in different efficacies of acupuncture intervention from the following four aspects. 1) ATP release in the stimulated acupoint area is one of the key factors for producing acupuncture analgesia; 2) Acupuncture induced suppression of ATP activity in the central nervous sys…

[Clinical experience of acupuncture and moxibustion in the diagnosis and treatment of persistent somatoform pain disorder].

The clinical manifestation and clinical diagnosis and treatment of acupuncture for persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD) were observed to explore its etiology. It is found that the causative factor of PSPD is probably relevant with pain memory induced by the negative emotions during the first attack of pain, which is in the category of "depression" in TCM. In clinical diagnosis, the medical history should be explored to discover the potential etiology and determine the diagnosis. In treatment, the root cause should be considered, focusing on mind and qi regulation and associating with ana

Current situation of clinical trial registration in acupuncture anesthesia: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Modern acupuncture anesthesia is a combination of Chinese and Western medicine that integrates the theories of acupuncture with anesthesia. However, some clinical studies of acupuncture anesthesia lack specific descriptions of randomization, allocation concealment, and blinding processes, with subsequent systematic reviews indicating a risk of bias. OBJECTIVE: Clinical trial registration is essential for the enhancement of the quality of clinical trials. This study aims to summarize the status of clinical trial registrations for acupuncture anesthesia listed on the World Health Or

Electroacupuncture and P2X receptors: purinergic mechanisms in pain modulation : A narrative review with structured evidence mapping.

Acupuncture and electroacupuncture (EA) are used for pain modulation, but the molecular events linking needling to analgesia remain incompletely defined. Purinergic signaling provides a biologically coherent framework because mechanical stimulation at acupoints releases extracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which can activate P2X receptors and is subsequently metabolized into adenosine. Importantly, the receptor-level literature synthesized here is dominated by EA studies, whereas key local ATP-adenosine evidence derives from manual or traditional acupuncture. This review synthesizes evi

Auricular Acupuncture in Emergency Department Treatment of Acute Pain.

The National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization note that acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for pain. Nonopioid treatment options for moderate to severe acute pain in the emergency department (ED) are limited. Additional strategies for managing acute pain in the ED are needed. Auricular Battlefield Acupuncture has been described as a simple, safe, rapid, and effective analgesic option to opioid medications in managing acute pain. We describe 4 cases in which emergency physicians with brief training performed this auricular acupuncture protocol to treat patients

Acupuncture for gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disorders.

Acupuncture has been used for various gastrointestinal (GI) conditions. Voluminous data support the effect of acupuncture on the physiology of the GI tract, including acid secretion, motility, neurohormonal changes, and changes in sensory thresholds. Much of the neuroanatomic pathway of these effects has been identified in animal models. A large body of clinical evidence supports the effectiveness of acupuncture for suppressing nausea associated with chemotherapy, postoperative state, and pregnancy. Prospective randomized controlled trials have also shown the efficacy of acupuncture for analge
