PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of direct cell injury of cryotherapy on eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma cells by an ex vivo cryotherapy experiment.
METHODS: It was a prospective interventional case series. Six patients with biopsy-proven nodular sebaceous gland carcinoma were included. After excision of the mass, a thin slice of the mass resembling the thickness of the conjunctiva was shaved off and was oriented over the broad end of a tissue forceps. The purpose of this case report is to present misdiagnosed sebaceous gland carcinoma of the lower eyelid with rapid growth in a young woman during pregnancy. Eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma is a relatively rare tumor and a disease primarily of older patients. It occurs more commonly in oriental populations and with a predilection for the upper eyelid. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment may help improve disease control and patient survival.

Sebaceous carcinoma is a rare malignancy primarily affecting the periocular sebaceous glands. We present a case of sebaceous carcinoma presenting as treatment-resistant chalazion. Diagnosis was made by excisional biopsy after failed treatment with warm compresses, eyelid hygiene and erythromycin ointment. Conjunctival map biopsies excluded local spread. Sebaceous lymphadenoma is a benign rare tumor of the salivary gland. It typically presents in the 6th decade of life as a slowly growing parotid mass. Pathologic examination reveals a well circumscribed mass composed of epithelial islands set in a lymphoid background. The epithelial nests are composed of sebaceous cells and ductal structures. Surgical excision is curative. Prognosis is good with rare recurrence or malignant transformation. Currently, there are less than 50 reported cases in the English literature. BACKGROUND: Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) for sebaceous carcinoma (SC) may reduce local recurrence rates, but published case series have small cohorts and limited follow-up. Sebaceous carcinoma of the eyelid, an extremely rare neoplasm, can resemble blepharitis, conjunctivitis, or chalazion, as in the case presented here. A biopsy specimen should be examined if these conditions fail to respond to therapy, especially if the lesion is unilateral. The tumor can be multifocal, and pagetoid proliferation is common. Therefore, recurrences are common after conservative surgery, even if frozen sections are obtained from the margins. Orbital exenteration may be necessary to prevent metastasis.
