Tympanoplasty in young patients: the role of adenoidectomy.

A retrospective study of 60 pediatric patients with dry tympanic membrane perforation undergoing type I tympanoplasty during a 15-year period was carried out. Seventy-seven percent of patients were followed up for 5 years. The overall success rate was 90%. All failures occurred in patients who previously had undergone adenoidectomy or adenotonsillectomy. However, sex was found to be the only statistically significant prognostic factor of tympanoplasty success: female patients had higher success rates than male patients. Neither patient age, prior ventilation tube placement, size of perforation

The effect of tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy on neutrophil chemotaxis.

Although tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy are common surgical procedures, the effects of these operations on the immune system have not been thoroughly determined. Our data on neutrophil chemotaxic functions in a group of 17 patients with chronic tonsillitis and adenoid hypertrophy show that chronic tonsillitis and adenoid hypertrophy impair neutrophil chemotaxic functions and that there is a subsequent normalization of these values following tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy.

The effect of adenoidectomy on nasal resistance to airflow.

The aim of the research was to determine whether the operation of adenoidectomy affected the nasal resistance to airflow. The total nasal respiratory resistance (TNR) was measured in forty-four children admitted for adenoidectomy and myringotomies, with or without tonsillectomy. The measurement was repeated three months post-operatively. There was significant correlation between the pre-operative TNR and the weight of adenoid removed at operation. A history of snoring pre-operatively, which was absent after operation, was related to a high pre-operative TNR and large adenoids. Those children i

A Rare Incidental Diagnosis After Adenoidectomy: Sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis is a systemic disease of unknown etiology. It is characterized by non-caseating granulomatous inflammation. It most commonly affects the pulmonary and intrathoracic lymph nodes. Isolated nasopharyngeal involvement is very rare. Pediatric sarcoidosis and isolated nasopharyngeal involvement are rare entities. Symptoms of nasopharyngeal involvement can mimic adenoid hypertrophy. In this case report, we present a nine-year-old female who was diagnosed coincidentally with sarcoidosis with the adenoidectomy specimen.

Risk Factors for Postoperative Bleeding after Adenoidectomy.

IMPORTANCE: Postoperative bleeding is a common and potentially life-threatening complication. Precise identification of risk factors in addition to the basic ones, such as coagulation parameters, is certainly very desirable. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify other possible risk factors for bleeding after adenoidectomy in children. DESIGN: This observational prospective study enrolled children undergoing adenoidectomy from October 2019 to February 2020, then evaluated the influence of possible risk factors for bleeding. SETTING: Tertiary pediatric otorhinolaryngology center.

Nasalance scores in pediatric patients after adenoidectomy.

OBJECTIVE: Adenoidectomy is one of the most frequently performed operations in childhood. Nasal obstruction and chronic infection are the basic indications for surgery. Nasometer measures both oral and nasal air pressure during loud speech, and calculates their ratio. The aim of this study was to compare the mean nasal values in patients who had adenoidectomy at different ages against a control group. METHODS: Eighty children between the ages of three and sixteen that had adenoidectomy in our clinic between 2006 and 2010 were compared against eighty age-matched controls who had not had nasal

Cervical complications following routine tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Fortunately, patients undergoing adenotonsillectomies have far more complaints than complications. Sore throats, dysphagia, and neck pain are frequent and expected symptoms after surgery. Differentiating these symptoms from early signs of severe cervical complications can be difficult. Such complications are rare but include atlanto-axial subluxation (Grisel's syndrome), cervical necrotizing fasciitis, cervical emphysema and cervical oseteomyelitis. Due to the frequency with which adenotonsillectomies are performed, most otolaryngologists will encounter these events during t

Risk factors for permanent hypernasality after adenoidectomy.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the causes of persistent, apparently permanent hypernasal speech following adenoidectomy in 10 subjects without overt cleft palates, and to establish a protocol to be followed before this operation is performed. DESIGN: Retrospective and descriptive design. PARTICIPANTS: Ten subjects, fulfilling the following criteria, were included: (i) subjects had undergone adenoidectomy which resulted in hypernasal speech that persisted for longer than 3 months (and was therefore considered to be permanent); (ii) subjects did not have a cleft lip or overt cleft palate; (iii) th

Velopharyngeal insufficiency starting at puberty without adenoidectomy.

At the Cleft Palate Unit of The Montreal Children's Hospital a number of patients are seen each year who developed velopharyngeal insufficiency after adenoidectomy. Each time one of these patients is seen, the question is asked: "What would have happened to the speech if adenoidectomy had not been done, and the adenoid had been allowed to undergo the normal process of atrophy at puberty?" We had not seen a patient develop velopharyngeal insufficiency at puberty without adenoidectomy until recently, when an 11.5-year-old boy presented with a history of hypernasality for 1.5 years. Physical exam

Adenoidectomy for otitis media with effusion (OME) in children.

BACKGROUND: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is an accumulation of fluid in the middle ear cavity, common amongst young children. The fluid may cause hearing loss. When persistent, it may lead to developmental delay, social difficulty and poor quality of life. Management of OME includes watchful waiting, autoinflation, medical and surgical treatment. Adenoidectomy has often been used as a potential treatment for this condition. OBJECTIVES: To assess the benefits and harms of adenoidectomy, either alone or in combination with ventilation tubes (grommets), for OME in children. SEARCH METHODS:

The use of laryngeal mask airway for tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy.

PURPOSE: Patients undergoing tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy traditionally receive anesthesia with endotracheal intubation (ETT) for airway management. The laryngeal mask airway (LMA) may be used instead and may be associated with less airway stimulation and shorter operating room times. The purpose of this study was to report on a large cohort of patients undergoing tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy while using the LMA for airway maintenance during anesthesia. METHODS: Patients undergoing tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy between January 6, 2017 and January 6, 2020 with a LMA were reviewed fo

Effects of adenoidectomy in children with symptoms of adenoidal hypertrophy.

The purpose of this study was to compare the preoperative symptoms of children who had adenoid hypertrophy with postadenoidectomy symptoms. Sixty children undergoing adenoidectomy were included in this prospective uncontrolled study at the Farabi Hospital of Karadeniz Technical University, an academic tertiary medical center. The symptoms of each child were described by their parents. Adenoidectomy with myringotomy alone or with tympanostomy tube placement was performed in all children. Two months after the operation, the children were re-evaluated for remaining or residual symptoms. Nasal obs

Polysomnographic studies in children undergoing adenoidectomy and/or tonsillectomy.

Forty children (age group four to 12 years) undergoing adenoidectomy and/or tonsillectomy were subjected to pre- and post-operative polysomnography. Thorough clinical evaluation and X-ray soft tissue nasopharynx lateral view was carried out for all the patients. The tonsils were clinically graded from grade I to IV, whereas the adenoids were measured radiographically (using three different measurements) in all children. Thirty out of 40 (75 per cent) children presented with predominant obstructive symptoms, out of whom 22 (73.3 per cent) were found to have obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), i.e.

Effectiveness of adenoidectomy and laser tympanic membrane fenestration.

OBJECTIVE: Adenoidectomy alone or with tonsillectomy (A+/-T) is an effective surgical intervention in the management of otitis media in children, especially when it is performed in conjunction with insertion of pressure equalization tubes (PETs). Otorrhea and persistent tympanic membrane (TM) perforation are frequent complications. This study evaluates the effectiveness of intermediate duration middle ear ventilation using laser tympanic membrane fenestration (LTMF) without tube insertion and as an adjunct to adenoidectomy in resolving middle ear disease within the first 90 days after surgery.
