Pleomorphic adenoma located in the soft palate is extremely rare. We report a 42-year-old woman, who presented to the ear nose & throat department with a mucosal swelling of the right soft palate mimicking a peritonsillar abscess. Drainage was attempted several times without significant results. Emergency tonsillectomy was carried out, which showed a tumour intraorally beside the right tonsil. The tumour and the tonsil were radically excised. Histological analysis of the tumour revealed a pleomorphic adenoma. At three-month follow-up the patient was doing well and MRI scan revealed a residual

Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) is a rare and aggressive malignancy that usually develops in primary or recurrent pleomorphic adenoma. It occurs in 6% of all pleomorphic adenomas, of which only 7% of cases occur in minor salivary gland tumors. The rate of occurrence and malignant change increases with time if a case is left untreated. Intraorally, it is mostly seen in the palate, followed by the upper lip and buccal mucosa. CXPA of the hard palate typically presents as a painless, slow-growing swelling that frequently involves the periosteum and underlying palatal bone. Imaging of CXPA

A male patient, 55 years old, suffered from intermittent sound, voice depression and shortness of breath for one year, and from dysphagia for 3-4 months. Through fiber laryngoscopy,we could see tumor in the left posterior aryepiglottic fold. The tumor's surface was smooth. A portion of the tumor protruded to the laryngeal cavity and the aryepiglottic fold external,it also covered most of the glottis. Bilateral vocal cord were smooth and had good mobility. Throat CT demonstrated an irregular soft tissue mass on the left side of the aryepiglottic fold in supraglottic area with obscure normal bound

Among salivary gland neoplasms, metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma (MPA) constitutes an extremely rare group of tumors. The present paper reports a case of pleomorphic adenoma (PA) in submandibular gland that, after more than 30 years of initial treatment, recurred and metastasized to ipsilateral neck lymph nodes and parotid gland. In an attempt to elucidate the malignant behavior of metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma, we performed Ki-67, p53, p16, and bcl-2 immunohistochemistry staining of our case sample. Many immunohistochemistry staining studies have been done on malignant salivary gland tum

AIM: To report a series of patients with lacrimal gland lesions simulating the clinicoradiological features of lacrimal gland pleomorphic adenoma (LGPA).
METHODS: Multicentre retrospective, interventional case series. Clinical records of all patients with lesions mimicking LGPA seen in five orbital units were reviewed.
RESULTS: The study included 14 patients (seven men and seven women) with a mean age of 50.9 years. The diagnosis of LGPA was made in all cases by experienced orbital surgeons, based on clinicoradiological features, and lacrimal gland excision was performed. Postoperative histo

BACKGROUND: Metastatic pleomorphic adenoma (MPA) is a benign-appearing pleomorphic adenoma that spreads to regional and distant sites, such as lymph nodes, lungs, or bones, despite lacking malignant features histologically.
METHODS: A systematic review of documented case reports and case series of metastatic pleomorphic adenoma is presented. Searches were conducted across various databases to identify articles published from 1953 to December 2024. The variables included were gender, age, symptoms, type of gland, histological features, molecular studies, type of treatment, and follow-up.

Pleomorphic adenomas (PAs) are benign tumors of the salivary glands. Rarely, they arise in the sinonasal cavity, presenting as well-defined, homogeneous soft tissue masses, causing expansive bony changes. The significance of PAs is the possibility of giving rise to malignant carcinoma - "carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma" (CXPA).Here, we present the case of a 64-year-old female complaining of progressive unilateral congestion and external nose deformation, mostly along the left contour of the radix, with epiphora of the ipsilateral eye. Eventually, a tumor began protruding from the left naris.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign tumour of salivary glands which is Known for its wide pleomorphic architecture. It accounts for 45-75% of all salivary gland neoplasm. It can involve major as well as minor salivary glands. Among minor salivary glands (5-10% of cases) the palate lip, nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx and trachea are the most common sites. Diagnosis is made with biopsy along with histopathology. Wide excision with biopsy and removal of underlying extension of tumour is the treatment of choice. Sixty years old farmer presented with painless swelling in the upper lip for

Suprasellar salivary gland-Like pleomorphic adenoma is not a common disease and seldom reported so far. We are reporting a case of a 23-year-old man with recurrent suprasellar salivary gland-like pleomorphic adenoma, who underwent an operation of subtotal, subfrontal resection under the wrong pathology diagnosis of benign teratoma in another hospital 4-year-ago. Four years later, he was admitted to our hospital for additional visual loss of the right eye (left, 1.0; right, 0.4) resulting from tumor regrowth. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed that suprasellar extension and compressed optic ch

INTRODUCTION: Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is found rarely in the parapharyngeal space (PPS). Because of late diagnosis due to slow growth, close proximity to vital neurovascular structures and risks of surgery, it poses a great difficulty for both diagnosis and surgical management. The preferred surgical approach to the PPS is the cervical-transparotid including a total parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation combined with a cervical access for dissection of cranial nerves and vascular structures thus allowing a safe removal of the tumor together with the parotid deep lobe. We report herein

A case is reported of a pleomorphic adenoma of the minor salivary glands of the oral cavity presenting with acute airway obstruction. This is the first reported case to our knowledge of a mixed salivary tumour of the upper respiratory tract causing upper airway obstruction and acute respiratory failure. The patient had to be intubated and transferred to the intensive care unit. After an elective tracheostomy was performed, the adenoma was excised from its fibrous capsule. It was found to originate from the soft palate and occupied the parapharyngeal space. A high index of suspicion should be k

A rare case of an intratemporal pleomorphic adenoma is presented and the management of such a tumour is discussed. Some anatomical aspects of the facial nerve, pertinent to the pathophysiology of facial paralysis are outlined. This case demonstrates that tumour extension into the temporal bone can be resected successfully at initial surgery with excellent facial nerve functional outcome. We advocate exploration of the fallopian canal to be carried out at primary surgery and be performed by a surgeon familiar with the surgical anatomy of the intratemporal segment of the facial nerve. This appro

BACKGROUND: In patients presenting with recurrent pleomorphic adenoma (rPA), clinical evaluation can fail to recognize carcinoma ex PA (cxPA). We aim to identify the risk factors for cxPA.
METHODS: This is a single institution retrospective case-control study from 2000 to 2015. CxPA was diagnosed based on surgical pathology. Demographics, clinical, and social histories were collected.
RESULTS: A number of 13/106 (12.3%) patients were diagnosed with cxPA, of which only 4/13 (31%) had clinical features suspicious for malignancy. Compared to benign rPA, factors associated with cxPA included age

AIMS: To compare cyclin D1 and p16(ink4) (p16) expression in normal tissue, pleomorphic adenoma (PA) and carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) of the parotid gland.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Immunohistochemistry was used to examine cyclin D1 and p16 expression in 43 parotid tumours (29 PAs and 14 CXPAs). Cyclin D1 and p16 were both significantly more likely to be expressed in the neoplastic than in the normal epithelial and stromal components of PA and CXPA (P < 0.001 and P < 0.005, respectively). Cyclin D1 was more likely to be expressed in the malignant components of CXPA than in the benign co

OBJECTIVES: Pleomorphic adenomas are the most frequent type of epithelial salivary gland neoplasms, and their malignant counterpart, the carcinoma in pleomorphic adenomas, is much less common. Beta-catenin is a cell adhesion molecule associated with the invasion and metastasis of carcinomas of the head and neck, esophagus. The objective of this study was to detect the expression of beta-catenin in pleomorphic adenomas, carcinomas in pleomorphic adenomas and normal salivary glands to discuss its role in the development of these two lesions.
STUDY DESIGN: The expression of beta-catenin (BD Tran

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This retrospective study was performed to evaluate the status of p53 in pleomorphic adenomas and carcinomas ex pleomorphic adenoma in the parotid gland. As loss or mutation of p53 can cause malignant transformation, the possible degeneration of pleomorphic adenomas to carcinomas ex pleomorhic adenoma was investigated by mutational analysis.
METHODS: Twenty-five Patients including 14 patients with pleomorphic adenomas and 11 patients with carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland were examined for p53 status. DNA was extracted out of paraffin-embedded tis
