Demand for health services or professionals among Brazilian adolescents according to the National School Health Survey 2015.

INTRODUCTION: Knowing the profile of individuals who demand health services or professionals could help in the improvement and reorganization of services. However, this subject is still underexplored among adolescents. This study aimed to describe and identify characteristics related to the demand for health services or professionals by Brazilian students. METHODS: Using data from the 2015 National School Health Survey, the prevalence and respective 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) of the demand for health services or professionals among students were estimated, and Poisson regression adjuste

Health Care Providers as Agents of Change: Integrating PrEP With Other Sexual and Reproductive Health Services for Adolescent Girls and Young Women.

Background: Successful integration of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with existing reproductive health services will require iterative learning and adaptation. The interaction between the problem-solving required to implement new interventions and health worker motivation has been well-described in the public health literature. This study describes structural and motivational challenges faced by health care providers delivering PrEP to adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) alongside other SRH services, and the strategies used to overcome them. Methods: We conducted in-depth interviews (IDIs

European Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ESCAP) practical guidance for clinicians and mental health services regarding child to adult mental health service transitions and managed discharge at the service boundary.

The European Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ESCAP) clinical guidance on transition supports care across the child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) and adult mental health service (AMHS) boundary throughout Europe. It outlines practices, procedures, and service environments to promote appropriate, safe and timely transition of young people from child and adolescent to adult mental health services or alternative care settings. The guidance addresses planning, decision-making and discharge management at CAMHS and, where needed, continuity in AMHS. The development of the

Whose business is autism? Exploring the intersecting roles of developmental paediatrics and child and adolescent mental health services.

This opinion article looks at how autism services for children and young people are organised within child development and child and adolescent mental health services. Although both play vital roles, their responsibilities often overlap, which can lead to delays and uncertainty for families. Rising demand, limited resources and differing pathways have added further pressure, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. The article highlights key challenges, including age cut-offs, gaps in continuity, the need for a collaborative integrated model, the impact of stigma and the difficulties faced by c

The transition process between child and adolescent mental services and adult mental health services for patients with anorexia nervosa: a qualitative study of the parents' experiences.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) often experience the transition between Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) as challenging. This period tends to have a negative influence on the continuity of care for the adolescents and represents a demanding and difficult period for the parents. To our knowledge, no previous study has explored the parents' experience with the transition from CAMHS to AMHS. Therefore, this qualitative study examines how parents experience the transition process from CAMHS to AMHS. METHODS: In collaborati

[Mental health of adolescents in the juvenile detention system: the relationship between the system's staff and external mental health services].

The aim of this article is to analyze how professionals in the mental health teams of the juvenile detention system in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, perceive the relations with the external Network of Psychosocial Care in dealing with mental health issues in adolescents serving time in juvenile detention centers. Nine interviews were held with mental health professionals in the system, and the results were presented with Fairclough's critical discourse analysis as the reference. The results were organized in three parts: the relationship between the juvenile detention system's mental health teams an

Mining and Mapping 25 Years of Medication Use in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services: Contact-Level Descriptive Analysis of Electronic Health Records.

BACKGROUND: Norwegian Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) use the World Health Organization's (WHO) multiaxial diagnostic system based on the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10); however, analysis of prescribing patterns among axes I-III is underexplored in electronic health records (EHRs) with intertwined patient, episode of care, and contact information. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and demonstrate an analytic pipeline for mining and mapping information from EHRs to facilitate understanding of clinical processes and support informed de

Disparities in adolescent mental health-related National Health Service presentations in England: a secondary school cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence on demographic and socioeconomic differences in adolescent mental health service use across multiple healthcare settings is vital for equitable health policy and service responses. We quantified inequalities in referrals to National Health Service (NHS)-funded mental health services and NHS hospital use for mental health concerns by social strata for secondary school pupils in England. METHODS: We used linked education-health records (ECHILD) to create a cohort of pupils entering state-funded secondary schools in England (age 11 years/year 7) from 2012/13 to 2021/22. We

Using a health concerns checklist as a bridge from reason for encounter to diagnosis of girls attending an adolescent health service.

OBJECTIVE: We assessed the extent to which a health concerns checklist (HCC) helps bridge the gap between the reason for encounter (RFE) described by girls entering an adolescent health service and the ultimate diagnosis. METHODS: The sample, 547 consecutive 12- to 18-year-old girls visiting an adolescent health service, first underwent a structured intake procedure, including a self-administered form on which they described their RFEs and other health concerns, as well as a psychosocial interview and medical evaluation performed by staff members. The RFEs, HCC items, and diagnoses, grouped i

The gap between perceived mental health needs and actual service utilization in Australian adolescents.

Despite being highly prevalent, adolescent mental health problems are undertreated. To better understand the mental health treatment gap, we assessed the prevalence and correlates of help-seeking, including perceived need for care and access to that care. Data were drawn from Young Minds Matter (YMM) survey-the second Australian child and adolescents survey of mental health and wellbeing. Parent-reported data and self-reported child data were combined into one dataset to analyse 2464 Australian adolescents aged 13-17 years. We employed bivariate and multivariate logistic regression models to a

The right location? Experiences of refugee adolescents seen by school-based mental health services.

Access to needed mental health services can be particularly difficult for newly arrived refugee and asylum-seeking adolescents, although many attend school. This study examined young refugees' impressions and experience of mental health services integrated within the school system. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 40 adolescent refugees discharged by three school-based mental health services across the United Kingdom. Two-thirds preferred to be seen at school. Rumination and worry about insecurity in the asylum process had a negative impact particularly on the adolescents' social

Adolescents and the right to health: eliminating age-related barriers to HIV/AIDS services in Rwanda.

Under international, regional, and domestic law, adolescents are entitled to measures ensuring the highest attainable standard of health. For HIV/AIDS, this is essential as adolescents lack many social and economic protections and are disproportionately vulnerable to the effects of the disease. In many countries, legal protections do not always ensure access to health care for adolescents, including for HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care. Using Rwanda as an example, this article identifies gaps, policy barriers, and inconsistencies in legal protection that can create age-related barriers

A comparison of sexual and reproductive health services provided by genitourinary and family planning clinics for adolescents.

The purpose of the study was to assess the use of sexual and reproductive health services by adolescents aged 15 years and younger. A case-note review was conducted at both a genitourinary medicine clinic and a family planning clinic in Edinburgh, UK. The demographics of the attendees, reasons for attending, risk factors, diagnostic tests undertaken and contraceptive advice given differed between the two clinics. Approximately 73% of attendees with documented responses used alcohol and 21% used recreational drugs, 5% reported self-harm, 25% reported being victims of sexual assault, 13% had a c

Adolescent school-based health care: a description of two sites in their 20th year of service.

PURPOSE: While there are currently nearly 1,400 school-based health centers (SBHC) nationwide, only 20% have been in operation for more than 10 years. The Mount Sinai Adolescent SBHC Program is now in its 20th year of service. The purpose of this study is to: (a) present the demographic data for 2003 high school SBHC medical visits, including age, sex and insurance status; (b) describe the current prevalence of medical and psychosocial risk factors of the students seen for examination; and (c) present general distributions for psychosocial risk factors found in 1988 archival information and no

Correlates of mental health service utilization and unmet need among a sample of male adolescents.

The authors sought to identify the correlates of mental health services utilization and unmet need for these services among a sample of adolescent males. We hypothesized that our findings would replicate and extend those of the recent Methods for the Epidemiology of Child and Adolescent Mental Disorders (MECA) study, which found that parental factors play a major role in their children's unmet mental health care needs. Our study involved an evaluation of mental health service utilization and unmet need during the prior 2 years, as reported by the subjects at a follow-up assessment at age 16. F
