Alcohol Use Trajectories Before and After Pregnancy Among Adolescent and Young Adult Mothers.

BACKGROUND: Moderate to heavy alcohol use during pregnancy (≥3 drinks/occasion) is linked to a range of adverse offspring outcomes. Prior studies suggest that adolescent and young adult mothers may be particularly vulnerable to these risky drinking behaviors during and after pregnancy. This study used latent class growth analysis (LCGA) to examine changes in risky drinking from prepregnancy to postpregnancy and identified prepregnancy predictors representing cognitive and social factors to inform prevention. METHODS: Participants included 432 adolescent and young adult mothers (aged 13 to 24;

Sexual intercourse among adolescent daughters of mothers with depressive symptoms from minority families.

This study investigated the association between maternal depressive symptoms and adolescent engagement in sexual intercourse in a non-clinical sample of mothers and their adolescent daughters from minority families. The current study explores ways in which maternal depression, family factors, and adolescent sex interact. Data were from a cross-sectional study of 176 mother-daughter dyads, including a subset of mothers with HIV. Logistic regression analyses revealed that among mothers who were not current marijuana users, more maternal depressive symptoms was associated with daughters' engageme

Gestational Weight Gain and Perinatal Outcomes in Adolescent Mothers: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: Optimal gestational weight gain (GWG) may differ for adolescents since they themselves may continue to grow throughout pregnancy. We examined the associations between GWG and perinatal outcomes among adolescents aged < 20 years and determined whether they differed from the associations among adult women aged 20 to 35 years. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of live born, singleton deliveries to 3725 adolescents and 50 400 adult women in Nova Scotia between 2003 and 2014. GWG was categorized as below, within, or above the 2009 Institute of Medicine recommendations.

Pregnancies in young adolescent mothers: a population-based study on 37 million births.

OBJECTIVES: Pregnancy in young adolescents is often understudied. The objective of our study was to evaluate the effect of young maternal age on adverse obstetrical and neonatal outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study using the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Linked Birth-Infant Death and Fetal Death data on all births in the US between 1995 and 2004. We excluded all births of gestational age under 24 weeks and those with reported congenital malformations or chromosomal abnormalities. Maternal age was obtained from the birth certificate and relative risks e

Depression during pregnancy and the postpartum period in adolescent and adult Portuguese mothers.

OBJECTIVE: To study prevalence as well as risk factors for pregnancy and postpartum depression in a sample of adolescent and adult Portuguese mothers. METHODS: The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was administered to 108 (54 adult and 54 adolescent) Portuguese women at 24-36 weeks of pregnancy and at 2-3 months postpartum. RESULTS: Rates for EPDS > 12 are high during the 3(rd) trimester of pregnancy (18.5%) and at 2-3 months postpartum (17.6%), and not significantly different between these two periods; more than 1/4 of the sample (27.8%) had an EPDS > 12 before or after delivery.

Malnutrition among children of adolescent mothers in a squatter community of Recife, Brazil.

In a study of 357 first time mothers in a squatter community of Recife it was found that 1 in 10 were less than 15 years old and 60 per cent less than 20 at the time of their first delivery. Two groups of mothers were distinguished, viz. adolescent mothers with a mean (SD) age at first delivery of 16.7 (0.78) years and older mothers with a mean (SD) age at first delivery of 25 (0.79). More than a third were living in common-law union. Of the adolescent mothers only 58 per cent were living with the child's father. A further 23 per cent had received financial support from their own parents durin

The relation of family and partner support to the adjustment of adolescent mothers.

The influence of teenage mothers' perceptions of family and partner social support on their postpartum adjustment was examined in this study. A structured interview with teenage mothers was conducted prenatally and a follow-up assessment was done when their children were 8 months of age. Both partner and family support were related to greater satisfaction with life, but each was associated in a different way with parenting and concerns about daily living. The results indicate the importance of distinguishing between specific sources of social support and different aspects of adjustment to teen

Predicting and understanding developmental delay of children of adolescent mothers: a multidimensional approach.

Divergent literatures on potential relationships among psychological, biological, and contextual factors that may contribute to mental retardation and other types of developmental delay in the children of adolescent mothers were reviewed. A linear model was proposed to describe the direct and indirect effects of learning ability, maternal health, social support, personal adjustment, cognitive readiness for parenting, and infant characteristics on adolescent parenting and child development. Because the validity of the model can be determined through the use of causal modeling (LISREL), it holds

Cesarean section deliveries among adolescent mothers enrolled in a comprehensive prenatal care program.

A comparison was made of the incidences of cesarean section deliveries between mothers 18 years of age or younger and those 19 to 21 years of age, all of whom were enrolled in a comprehensive program of prenatal care. Also compared were the indications for surgical delivery between the two groups. The rate of cesarean section deliveries was 8.7% among mothers 18 years of age or younger, compared to 14.5% among mothers 19 to 21 years of age. The general-ward cesarean section rate at the same hospital was 19.4%. Since maternal height and weight, and infant's birth weight may affect the diagnosis

Parenting Stress in Mothers of Children and Adolescents with Down Syndrome.

Parenting stress has deleterious effects on parents, children, and overall family functioning. Parents of children with intellectual disability, including Down Syndrome (DS), show higher levels of parenting stress than parents of typically developing children. This research aimed to (i) evaluate parenting stress levels in a group of mothers of youths with DS using a parent-report questionnaire, (ii) identify children's individual and clinical features associated with maternal stress, and (iii) identify specific situational life/demographics factors related to maternal stress. Food security reduces multiple HIV infection risks for high-vulnerability adolescent mothers and non-mothers in South Africa: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent girls and young women, including adolescent mothers, in Southern Africa have high HIV seroconversion and transmission. We need to know which risks drive HIV infections, and what can reduce these risks. METHODS: We interviewed 1712 adolescent girls and young women (11-23 years), including 1024 adolescent mothers who had conceived before age 20 and had a living child, from two health municipalities of South Africa's Eastern Cape Province between March 2018 and July 2019. Recruitment was through multiple community, school and health facility channels. Associations betwee

The role of mother-adolescent relationship quality in moderating the effect of adolescent anxiety on psychosocial functioning.

OBJECTIVE: The effects of anxiety on adolescents' psychosocial outcomes are well established, but little consideration has been given to the potential influence of the parent-adolescent relationship in moderating these effects. This study examined the moderating role of parent-adolescent connectedness and hostility in the association between anxiety and adolescent psychosocial functioning (measured by positive development [PD] and oppositional defiant behaviour [ODB]) within a community sample of mothers of adolescents. METHOD: Participants were 723 Australian mothers (M age = 44.05 years, SD

Pre-Pregnancy Dating Violence and Birth Outcomes Among Adolescent Mothers in a National Sample.

Although infants born to adolescent mothers are at increased risk of adverse birth outcomes, little is known about contributors to birth outcomes in this group. Given past research linking partner abuse to adverse birth outcomes among adult mothers, we explored associations between pre-pregnancy verbal and physical dating violence and the birth weight and gestational age of infants born to adolescent mothers. Data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health Waves I (1995/1996), II (1996), and IV (2007/2008) were analyzed. Girls whose first singleton live births occurred after Wav

Visceral adiposity in the first half of pregnancy predicts newborn weight among adolescent mothers.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal obesity is a strong risk factor for gestational diabetes mellitus and fetal macrosomia. We assessed the association between maternal visceral adiposity tissue (VAT) depth in the first half of pregnancy and both glucose tolerance in late pregnancy and newborn weight in pregnant adolescents. METHODS: We completed a prospective cohort study of 73 pregnant adolescents aged 10 to 19 years, without pre-pregnancy diabetes. VAT depth was measured by ultrasound at 12 to 20 weeks' gestation, followed by a two-hour 75-g oral glucose tolerance test at 36 to 39 weeks' gestation, to det
