Prognostic Factors for Adulthood Psychosis in Adolescent Psychiatry Services: A Longitudinal Total Birth Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: As many as half of all psychotic disorders diagnosed by age 28 in the population emerge in individuals who attended child and adolescent psychiatry services, highlighting important opportunities for psychosis prediction and prevention. An important next step is to identify prognostic factors for later psychotic disorders within this clinical population. We assessed a large number of potential prognostic factors for adult-onset psychosis within adolescent psychiatry services. STUDY DESIGN: Linked population-wide register data for all individuals born in Finland 1987-

Using real patients in e-learning: case-based online training in child and adolescent psychiatry.

Objectives: In undergraduate medical education and in the subject of child and adolescent psychiatry, examining young patients face-to-face is a key element of teaching. With the abrupt shutdown of face-to-face teaching caused by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, a case-based online training program integrating audio and video of real patients was developed. Methods: The blended learning platform CaseTrain guides medical students in their final year through real child-psychiatric patient cases, such as anorexia, autism, or attention deficit disorder, through presentation of video and audio of real pati

Psychopharmacology in child and adolescent psychiatry: a review of the past seven years. Part I.

OBJECTIVE: To present a critical overview of the literature published in the past 7 years on the efficacy and safety of psychoactive agents in mental retardation with associated psychiatric disorders, autistic disorder, Tourett's disorder, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. METHOD: Double-blind and placebo-controlled clinical trials and open studies were reviewed and selected reports presented. RESULTS: The literature review reveals that progress has been made in the psychopharmacological treatment of the above conditions. This is partly because more studies use larger sample size

DSM-IV or ICD-10-DCR diagnoses in child and adolescent psychiatry: does it matter?

OBJECTIVE: DSM-IV is the most widely used diagnostic classification system in research, whereas ICD-10 is more widely used clinically. Knowledge of differences is essential when research findings are implemented in daily clinical practice. We examined differences between the two diagnostic systems regarding three major child psychiatric diagnostic categories. METHODS: A total of 199 consecutively referred, child psychiatric patients were interviewed with a semistructured diagnostic interview (K-SADS-PL) including questions covering specific ICD-10-DCR criteria, and diagnosed according to both

First-time suicide attempters, repeat attempters, and previous attempters on an adolescent inpatient psychiatry unit.

OBJECTIVE: To compare clinical characteristics of hospitalized adolescents who (1) have recently made their first suicide attempt, (2) have recently made a second or subsequent attempt, (3) have made previous but no recent attempts, or (4) have never made an attempt. METHOD: Semistructured psychiatric diagnostic interviews were used to determine history of recent and previous suicidal behavior among 225 consecutively admitted adolescents to an inpatient psychiatric facility. Twenty-seven first-time attempters, 32 repeat attempters, and 40 previously suicidal youths were compared with 126 nons

Digital Media Literacy Group for Adolescents in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: Prospective Multicenter Single-Arm Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Digital media literacy (DML) may help adolescents to handle online risks, misinformation, digital violence, and problematic media use more reflectively. However, structured interventions for adolescents in child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP), particularly in inpatient and day-treatment settings, remain scarce. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and perceived usefulness of a manualized DML group for adolescents in CAP and explored preliminary changes in digital self-efficacy and critical media literacy (CML). METHODS: A prospective single-arm feasibi

Multicomponent Operational Strategies to Support Follow-up Attendance in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: A Longitudinal Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Missed follow-up appointments disrupt continuity of care and leave scarce outpatient psychiatric capacity underutilized. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate longitudinal changes in follow-up missed appointment rates (MAR) associated with operational strategies implemented in a child and adolescent psychiatry outpatient clinic. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study using monthly data from July 2018 through December 2022. The intervention included telehealth expansion, implementation of the attendance engagement framework (AEF), and communication enhancements. Segmented inte

Diagnosis on the way out - personality on the way in? Priorities in treatment in child and adolescent psychiatry.

The scientific basis for practice in child psychiatry has developed apace. And has thrown up several quandries for an accepted paradigm for good practice anchored to the diagnostic schema developed in adult psychiatry. This paper hopes to stimulate discussion about where alternative paradigms might lead us on a path to precision medicine as applied to child psychiatry.

Child and adolescent psychiatry and mental health research "MI VEDETE?" project: a value-based and participatory approach to adolescent mental health in Italian schools.

BACKGROUND: The "MI VEDETE?" ("Do You See Me?") project explores adolescent mental health, identifying emotional distress and preventing mental health disorders through co-designing the solutions with upper secondary school students, families, and educators within the school environment. The survey assesses multiple domains of adolescent mental distress across emotional, cognitive, behavioural, physical, sleep-related, and risk-related dimensions. METHODS: The project was conducted between 2024 and 2025 in three Italian regions (Lombardy, Lazio, and Puglia). A mixed-methods approach was adopt

Artificial Intelligence in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: A Narrative Review of Recent Clinical Applications and Ethical Considerations.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This narrative review examines recent literature of artificial intelligence (AI) in child and adolescent psychiatry. With increasing mental health disorders in young people along with persistent workforce shortages, AI has emerged as a potential tool to improve efficiency and support clinical decision making. However, using AI raises important ethical concerns which are summarized in our review. RECENT FINDINGS: Most AI applications in child and adolescent psychiatry remain early in development and are not ready for routine clinical use. AI scribes are likely impractical in

[Cognitive remediation therapy for children: literature data and clinical application in a child and adolescent psychiatry department].

The hypothesis of cerebral plasticity in psychiatric disorders has encouraged clinicians to develop cognitive remediation therapy (CRT), a new therapeutic approach based on attention, memory, planning, and mental flexibility tasks. The first cognitive remediation programs were developed and validated for adults with schizophrenia and were shown to have a positive impact on executive functions as well as on quality of life. In children and adolescents, researchers emphasized the existence of executive dysfunction in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autistic spectrum disorder, attention defi

[An integrative research model for child and adolescent psychiatry bringing together biological, psychological and social research approaches].

After some general remarks on the current situation of child and adolescent psychiatric research in Germany, a research concept is presented which in the course of 30 years of testing and further development has proven to be successful both in the inauguration of scientific projects, as well as in the qualification of trainees and co-workers. The nucleus of this concept is a research unit that is to a large extent independent of the daily health care routine. Some of the unit staff members are natural scientists holding permanent positions, complemented by a secondary labour force of young doc

Experience with standardized assessments in child and adolescent psychiatry: Findings from a national trainee survey in Switzerland.

The current shortage of child and adolescent mental health specialists in Europe and around the world, coupled with an increasing mental health burden among young people poses significant challenges that future child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP) training programs must address. Promoting the use of standardized assessments (SA) has the potential to improve both efficiency and quality of patient care as well as resident training programs. This study aimed to characterize a sample of CAP trainees (residents and assistant psychologists) in Switzerland and evaluate their SA use as well as their

Narrative Matters: Between hope and cynicism - competing narratives and the moral economy of child and adolescent psychiatry.

BACKGROUND: Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) are currently marked by a paradox: growing public recognition of youth mental health difficulties coincides with increasingly fragile and underresourced services. Beyond organisational strain, the field is shaped by competing narratives about its mission and limits (hopeful progressivism which emphasises innovation, early intervention and developmental plasticity; on the other, defensive pessimism which foregrounds chronicity, clinical realism and institutional constraint. AIMS: To examine how these competing narratives operate w

Exploring Barriers and Facilitators to Deprescribing Psychotropics in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: A Qualitative Study from India.

BACKGROUND: Deprescribing, a structured, planned, and supervised approach to medication discontinuation, is increasingly recognized as an imperative rather than an elective component of rational psychopharmacological practice. Deprescribing is particularly compelling in child and adolescent psychiatry, where, despite accumulating evidence for pharmacotherapy, uncertainties regarding long-term risks and benefits persist. This makes deprescribing an important and often complex clinical consideration. Despite growing international attention, deprescribing remains challenging to implement in routi

Detecting child sexual abuse in child and adolescent psychiatry: a survey study of healthcare professionals' assessment practice.

BACKGROUND: Research shows that only around half of all survivors of child sexual abuse (CSA) disclose the abuse during childhood and adolescence. This is worrying, as CSA is related to substantial suffering later in life. The proportion of children and adolescents who have been exposed to CSA is significantly higher in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP) than in the general population. Healthcare professionals report that uncovering CSA is a complex and challenging task. However, we know little about how they proceed when uncovering CSA. More knowledge of healthcare personnel's experience i
