SIGNIFICANCE: The findings to date indicate that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in later life. We demonstrate how network analysis, a statistical method that estimates complex patterns of associations between variables, can be used to model ACEs and CVD. The main goal is to explore the differential impacts of ACE components on CVD outcomes, conditioned on other ACEs and important covariates using network analysis. We also sought to determine which ACEs are most synergistically correlated and subsequently cluster together to affect CVD ris

The current study aims to present the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences and examine the healthcare costs associated with primary, allied, and specialist healthcare services. The Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health is a general health survey of four nationally representative age cohorts. The current study uses 20 years of survey and administrative data (1996-2015) from the cohort born 1973-1978. Overall, 41% of women indicated at least one category of childhood adversity. The most commonly reported type of childhood adversity was having a household member with a mental ill

This paper examines the impact of childhood sexual victimization, physical abuse, and dysfunctional family background on sexual dysfunctions in adulthood in a nonclinical male student sample. The current analysis is based on data from a survey by questionnaire from 301 males. Our findings show that (a) occasional sexual dysfunctions, especially premature ejaculation and sexual desire disorder, are frequent in young male adults; and (b) long-lasting adverse familial relationship to attachment figures are more influential to later sexual dysfunction than are childhood sexual abuse experiences.

It has been suggested that the adaptive stress response may be disrupted by life adverse events such as childhood maltreatment. To investigate if the number of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) increases susceptibility to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), spondyloarthritis (SpA), scleroderma (SSc), and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), we interviewed 315 patients with rheumatic disease (100 SLE; 40 SSc; 60 SpA; 115 RA) and 272 controls, using questions of the ACEs study questionnaire validated to ask about experiences of childhood abuse, negligence, domestic violence, and household dysfunctions.

Childhood bereavement (CB) resulting from a parent or primary caregiver death is associated with a range of adverse outcomes. Little is known about the association between CB and adult flourishing in the context of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and positive childhood experiences (PCEs). In a cross-sectional observational study, we examined how ACEs, PCEs, and adult flourishing differs by self-reported CB history among 9468 Chinese young adults (18-35 years), of which 4.3% experienced CB (n = 409). Data collection included convenience sampling among university students in Mainland China.

Traumatic and stressful events of childhood, known as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), have been associated with numerous health outcomes. However, little is known about ACEs in atopic dermatitis (AD) patients. We sought to determine the relationship between ACEs and childhood AD. Data were analyzed from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a longitudinal birth cohort study that followed 4898 women and their children born in large US cities. Multivariable weighted logistic regression models adjusting for sociodemographics were constructed to determine the associations of ACEs w

Adverse childhood events (ACEs) represent a major public health burden in the United States, as exposure to ACEs increases the risk of mental health disorders, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and cancer and can greatly affect quality of life. Although the effects of ACEs on physiology are complex, significant evidence suggests that ACEs may affect the immune system later in life. As the field of immunotherapy gains prominence in cancer treatment, it becomes imperative to explore how ACEs may impact cancer immunotherapy. Brain cancer, especially glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), has a very poor p

Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with adolescent substance use. However, the influence of individual ACEs after controlling for concurrent ACEs is understudied. Methods: Using longitudinal data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study (n = 3200), we evaluated binary logistic models to test associations from 11 individual ACEs at ages 3-9 (physical abuse; emotional abuse; neglect; housing instability; food insecurity; community violence; parental depression, problematic substance use, intimate partner violence [IPV], incarceration, and death) to adole

INTRODUCTION: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with an increased risk of developing chronic health conditions, including Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) and subjective cognitive decline (SCD), self-reported confusion/memory loss, and an early clinical manifestation of ADRD. While ACEs and SCD have both been individually studied in transgender and nonbinary (TGN) adults, no study has examined the relationship between the two among this population. This study sought to establish the prevalence of ACEs and their association with SCD among TGN adults.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) is associated with increased risk of substance use in women, including cannabis use during pregnancy. Less is known, however, about how resilience factors moderate the association of ACEs on cannabis use in early motherhood.
METHODS: We used survey data from 126 predominately low-income and diverse mothers enrolled in a longitudinal study in the South Central U.S. Multiple logistic regression models evaluated associations between ACEs and cannabis use through three years postpartum, stratified by resilience scores (median split). Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with negative consequences for physical and mental health. ACEs are defined as harmful experiences from conception to age 18. They generate chronic toxic stress when exposed to emotional or sexual abuse or a dysfunctional home. ACEs produce "programming" on brain plasticity with immunoneuroendocrinological, cerebral, and epigenetic changes. The result is suboptimal development of physical, mental, and emotional abilities. This "programming" can be mitigated by resilience, family and social support. When faced with new stressors, psychological

BACKGROUND: The adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) screening tool is a research measure that has not been frequently employed within the scientific literature addressing deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) populations.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether those who are DHH are more likely to cross-sectionally report a high-risk number of ACEs than those who are not DHH.
METHODS: Data consisting of a weighted total of n = 24,797,770 US adults' responses to the 2021 BRFSS survey were utilized for this study.
RESULTS: The DHH-ACE association was effect modified by age group. In the 25-to-34 (aOR = 2.98
