Aeromonas hydrophila: A Rare Cause of Deep Visceral Abscess.

Aeromonas hydrophila is a rare but notable pathogen associated with deep visceral abscesses, especially in patients with underlying malignancies or immunosuppression. Commonly found in aquatic environments, it is typically implicated in gastrointestinal infections but can also cause severe conditions such as sepsis or necrotizing fasciitis. In this report, we describe the case of a 76-year-old female patient diagnosed with pancreatic adenocarcinoma and a concurrent abscess in the pancreatic region caused by A. hydrophila. The patient presented with epigastric pain, jaundice, and elevated liver

Development of Bioluminescent Virulent Aeromonas hydrophila for Understanding Pathogenicity.

Virulent Aeromonas hydrophila (vAh) strains that cause motile Aeromonas septicemia (MAS) in farmed channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) have been an important problem for more than a decade. However, the routes of infection of vAh in catfish are not well understood. Therefore, it is critical to study the pathogenicity of vAh in catfish. To this goal, a new bioluminescence expression plasmid (pAKgfplux3) with the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (cat) gene was constructed and mobilized into vAh strain ML09-119, yielding bioluminescent vAh (BvAh). After determining optimal chloramphenicol conc

Evolving Antibiotic Resistance of Aeromonas Species in Finger Replantation.

Background: Infections with Aeromonas spp. are a recognized complication of leech therapy for circulatory complications in replanted digits. Ciprofloxacin is commonly used empirically for Aeromonas coverage in such cases. Evolving resistance patterns of Aeromonas should be considered in designing an antibiotic strategy. Methods: Three consecutive patients with complicated replantations had site cultures yielding Aeromonas isolates resistant to ciprofloxacin. These cultures were analyzed to identify effective antibiotic agents. Results: Each Aeromonas isolate, and each additional site organism,

Pyogenic meningitis manifesting during therapy for Aeromonas hydrophila sepsis.

Pyogenic meningitis became apparent on the third day of ampicillin and gentamicin therapy for Aeromonas hydrophila sepsis in a patient with severe alcoholic hepatitis. The patient responded clinically to therapy with intravenous cefotaxime sodium and gentamicin sulfate. Antibiotic therapy that provides adequate CSF concentrations should be considered in the treatment of patients with Aeromonas sepsis.

Extracellular virulence factors of Aeromonas hydrophila in fish infections.

Aeromonas hydrophila NRC 505 produced extracellular substances which were capable of causing pathological effects when injected into trout. Proteolytic activity and haemolytic activity of the extracellular products, and the effect on fish, were lost on heating. The extracellular substances from strain G35, a protease-deficient mutant, were significantly more toxic to both rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) and speckled trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) than the analogous preparation from the parental strain NRC 505. The response of speckled trout injected intraperitoneally with dilutions of the extra

Comprehensive Genomic Analysis of Antimicrobial Resistance in Aeromonas dhakensis.

Aeromonas dhakensis is prevalent in aquatic environments in Taiwan and known for its notable antimicrobial resistance. However, comprehensive pan-genomic studies for this species in Taiwan are limited. This study analyzed 28 clinical A. dhakensis isolates using single-molecule real-time sequencing technology, coupled with diverse databases, to elucidate the whole genomes. The focus was on phylogenetic relatedness, antimicrobial resistance genes, and mobile genetic elements. Genomic analysis and multilocus sequence typing were utilized to identify A. dhakensis strains of heterogeneous origins.

Aeromonas Infections in Humans-Antibiotic Resistance and Treatment Options.

The genus Aeromonas is widely distributed in aquatic environments, where it is a frequent fish pathogen. It has also been described in association with human infections, with most cases caused by A. caviae, A. veronii biovar sobria, and A. hydrophila. More recently, A. dhakensis has emerged as an increasingly important human pathogen. Transmission occurs primarily through ingestion or contacts with aquatic sources, or by consuming contaminated food, particularly from aquatic origins. Growing resistance in Aeromonas has been reported for penicillins (including their combinations with classical

Multiplex PCR assay to identify clinically important Aeromonas species.

The genus Aeromonas is increasingly implicated in human infections. However, accurate species-level identification remains challenging, particularly in clinical microbiology laboratories. This study aimed to develop a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay to identify four Aeromonas species-Aeromonas hydrophila, Aeromonas caviae, Aeromonas veronii, and Aeromonas dhakensis-most frequently associated with human infectious diseases. A total of 788 whole genome sequencing (WGS) data sets from 31 Aeromonas species were analyzed to identify open reading frames (ORFs) specifically present in

[Fatal retroperitoneal necrotizing fasciitis due to Aeromonas caviae septicaemia].

Aeromonas is well-recognized for causing diarrhea and post-traumatic wound infections. The most common Aeromonas species include Aeromonas hydrophila, Aeromonas caviae, and Aeromonas sobria. In cases of immunocompromise and malignancy, Aeromonas infections can prove fatal. Instances of deadly necrotizing fasciitis in the extremities due to Aeromonas infection have been documented. Herein, a case of previously unreported fatal retroperitoneal necrotizing fasciitis involving Aeromonas caviae in a patient with a history of gastric cancer is presented.

Necrotizing Fasciitis Caused by Aeromonas hydrophila With Catastrophic Progression.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe deep soft tissue infection with poor disease prognosis. The Aeromonas species is characterized as gram-negative, facultative, anaerobic small bacilli that are ubiquitously distributed in aquatic environments. Necrotizing fasciitis caused by this species is rare but has an extremely high mortality rate, especially in immunocompromised individuals. This study presents the case of a 39-year-old man with alcoholic liver cirrhosis, Child-Pugh class B, with necrotizing fasciitis caused by Aeromonas hydrophila. Despite debridement and bilateral above-knee amputation

[Tetracyclines-induced phenotype and resistance mechanism in Aeromonas hydrophila].

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to explore the changes of sensitivity to tetracyclines and the resistance mechanism of Aeromonas hydrophila (Ah) after in vitro induction by exposure Ah to the increasing concentration of Doxycycline (DO). METHODS: The sensitive Ah isolates were first screened from clinical isolates and then incubated on TSA solid medium containing DO of 1/4×MIC value. The resistant strains were obtained through continuous subculture by increasing the concentration of DO in the medium for geometric series. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of induced strains to D
