Aflatoxins determinations are usually expensive and employ environmentally unfriendly procedures, thus, the search for new materials and technologies, that are both ecologically safe, inexpensive and able to fulfill its role with little pre-processing is growing. One interesting approach is employing by-products as adsorbents during the extraction step of aflatoxins especially in products such as milk and dairy that are so important in basic dietary. Thus, a method to use rice husk, an agroindustry residue that is a promising material to adsorb aflatoxins to enable further analysis steps, is p

BACKGROUND: Aflatoxin B1causes damage to the DNA by the alkylation of bases and P53 mutation. Exposure to this mycotoxin is associated with the development of liver cancer. Measures to reduce grain and cereal contamination have been a focus however, the effects of these measures are still lagging behind and exposure continues to occur even in populations at risk of developing liver cancer.
OBJECTIVE: To quantify aflatoxin B1 exposure in a population of HIV infected patients with and without HCC.
METHOD: This was a cross-sectional study among 196 patients with HIV and or HCC. We evaluated the

Aflatoxin analysis of blood and urine by high performance liquid chromatography in 584 Sudanese children is reported. The results in 404 malnourished children comprising 141 kwashiorkor, 111 marasmic kwashiorkor and 152 with marasmus are compared with 180 age-matched controls and correlated with clinical findings. The aflatoxin detection rate and mean concentration were higher in serum of children with kwashiorkor than the other groups. The difference between the detection rate in kwashiorkor and controls was significant (p less than 0.05). The aflatoxin detection rate in urine was highest in

The aim of the present work was to study the presence of aflatoxins in blood and urine of infants with protein-energy malnutrition (PEM). The study was conducted on 60 infants, 30 with kwashiorkor and 30 with marasmus, with 10 age-matched healthy infants studied as a control group. Complete blood count, liver function tests, and determination of the level of aflatoxins (B1, B2, G1, G2, M1, M2, G2a, B3, GM1, P, and aflatoxicol R0) in blood and urine were carried out in all studied infants. Serum aflatoxins were detected in more infants with kwashiorkor (80%) than in those with marasmus (46.7%).

The relative contribution of, and possible mechanism of interaction between, aflatoxin and hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the development of primary hepatocellular carcinoma can be better investigated now that markers of individual exposure to both factors are available. In this study, blood samples were collected over a 1-month period from 117 children aged 3 to 4 years, resident in Kuntair or Kerr Cherno in the Upper Niumi District of The Gambia. Samples were analyzed for aflatoxin-albumin (AF-alb) adducts, markers of HBV infection, liver enzymes [serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT)] as markers

In this paper, aflatoxin M1, sulfamethoxazole, ciprofloxacin, and lincomycin were selected as model analytes, and we introduced a novel quadplex droplet microarray format for simultaneous screening of multiple chemical residues in milk samples. The droplet microarray relied on micro-volume shallow-well microplate combined with microspheres-based suspension array. In the new established droplet microarrays, the consumption of samples and immunoreagents was reduced by 80 %. While, the antigen-antibody binding process can be completed in as little as 5 min. The limit of detection was evaluated to

CONTEXT: Aflatoxins are the most harmful mycotoxins that cause human and animal health concerns. Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) is the primary hydroxylated metabolite of aflatoxin B1 and is linked to the development of hepatocellular carcinoma and immunotoxicity in humans and animals. Because of the important role of dairy products in human life, especially children, AFM1 is such a major concern to humans because of its frequent occurrence in dairy products at concentrations high enough to cause adverse effects to human and animal health. Reduced its bioavailability becomes a high priority in order to pr

The first case of human systemic infection by an Aspergillus flavus isolate demonstrated to produce aflatoxins in vitro and in vivo is described. The patient, a 41-year-old man with acute myelogenous leukaemia, developed a complication of suspected pulmonary Aspergillus infection during remission induction therapy. Antifungal chemotherapy brought about a considerable degree of improvement, but remission of the underlying disease was not attained. Bone marrow transplantation was also not effective. The patient showed recovery from neutropenia but died despite aggressive antifungal chemotherapy.

The purpose of this study was to characterize light and electron microscopic findings from 9 dogs that had consumed aflatoxin-contaminated commercial dog food from recalled batches. Four dogs died and 5 were euthanized after signs of liver failure. Analysis of feed and liver samples confirmed exposure to aflatoxin. Of the 9 dogs, 8 had classic signs of liver failure, and 1 had signs of liver failure. Enlarged, pale yellow livers were seen macroscopically at necropsy in the dogs with subacute hepatopathy, and cirrhosis was noted in the dog with chronic hepatopathy. Histopathologic findings incl

BACKGROUND: This study aims to explore both the toxic effects of aflatoxins (AFs) and the protective effects of degrading enzymes (DE) on broilers exposed to AFs.
RESULTS: The findings reveal that a diet contaminated with 69.15 μg kg-1 of aflatoxin B1 had significant adverse effects on broilers. Specifically, it led to a reduction in average daily gain, dressed yield percentage, half-eviscerated yield with giblet yield percentage, eviscerated yield percentage, as well as serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase activity and liver SOD activity (P < 0.05). Conversely, the diet i

The presence of mycotoxins in foodstuff causes serious health problems to consumers and economically affects the food industry. Among the mycotoxins, aflatoxins are very toxic and highly carcinogenic contaminants which affect the safety of many foods, and therefore endanger human health. Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1 ) found in milk results from the biotransformation of aflatoxin B1 . Many efforts have been made to control the source of AFM1 from farmers to dairy product companies. However, AFM1 escapes ordinary methods of food treatment such as cooking, sterilization, and freezing, hence it appears in m

The Qidong Liver Cancer Institute (QDLCI) and the Qidong Cancer Registry were established in 1972 with input from doctors, other medical practitioners, and non-medical investigators arriving from urban centers such as Shanghai and Nanjing. Medical teams were established to quantify the extent of primary liver cancer in Qidong, a corn-growing peninsula on the north side of the Yangtze River. High rates of liver cancer were documented and linked to several etiologic agents, including aflatoxins. Local corn, the primary dietary staple, was found to be consistently contaminated with high levels of

Controlling aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) in milk and dairy products is of critical importance due to its persistent global threat to public health and significant economic impact on the dairy industry. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of nano-chitosan and clay bentonite on AFM1 in spiked UHT cow's milk and their impact on its sensory attributes and composition. The AFM1 concentration was reduced by 64.5%, 76.3%, and 80.2% at 0.25%, 0.5%, and 1.0% concentrations of nano-chitosan, respectively. Regarding bentonite, the AFM1 concentration was reduced by 21.7%, 34.2%, and 38.6% at 0.25%, 0.5%, and 1

Aflatoxins are carcinogenic metabolites produced by toxigenic Aspergillus species that contaminate foods. This cross-sectional study, nested within the Maule Cohort (MAUCO)-a population-based prospective cohort of 9,462 rural adults aged 38 to 74 years in Molina, Chile-measured urinary aflatoxin M1 (AFM1), a biomarker of recent aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) exposure, in 1,000 randomly selected first-morning urine samples collected at baseline (2014-2017) using a validated ELISA kit. Of these, 95 were excluded due to extreme dilution or concentration (creatinine <0.3 or >3 mg/mL), leaving 905 for analysi

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and fumonisin B1 (FB1) are poisons that contaminate poorly stored staple foods in resource-limited settings. Antenatal AFB1 and FB1 exposure may cause anaemia. We aimed to determine the associations of urinary aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) and FB1, biomarkers of AFB1 and FB1 exposure, respectively, with erythrocyte parameters and anaemia. A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in 68 HIV-infected and 61 HIV-uninfected pregnant women ≥ 20 weeks gestational age in Harare, Zimbabwe. AFM1 and FB1 were measured in urine via competitive ELISA, and levels were grouped into terti

Aflatoxins (AFs), harmful secondary metabolites produced by the genus Aspergillus, particularly Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus, are one of the best-known potent mycotoxins, posing a significant risk to public health. The primary type, especially aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), is a potent carcinogen associated with liver cancer, immunosuppression, and other health problems. Environmental factors such as high temperatures, humidity, and inadequate storage conditions promote the formation of aflatoxin in staple foods such as maize, peanuts, and rice. Immunocompromised individuals, including

Contamination of grains and other crops by aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a highly toxic aflatoxin produced by Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus, poses a serious threat to human health and is an important food safety issue. In this study, a competitive up-converting phosphor technology-based lateral flow (AFB1-UPT-LF) assay was developed for rapid detection of AFB1. Detection sensitivity of the proposed assay can reach 0.03ngmL-1 for standard AFB1 solutions, with the coefficients of variation (CV) less than 10% (from 1.0 to 9.4%). A good linearity (r=0.9889) was observed for quantification
