Social isolation and aggression training lead to escalated aggression and hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis hyperfunction in mice.

Although the participation of sex hormones and sex hormone-responsive neurons in aggressive behavior has been extensively studied, the role of other systems within the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis remains elusive. Here we assessed how the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and kisspeptin systems are impacted by escalated aggression in male mice. We used a combination of social isolation and aggression training (IST) to exacerbate mice's aggressive behavior. Next, low-aggressive (group-housed, GH) and highly aggressive (IST) mice were compared regarding neuronal activity in the

Parent-to-child aggression, intimate partner aggression, conflict resolution, and children's social-emotional competence in early childhood.

Early childhood is critical to the development of children's social-emotional competence, which predicts peer relations and school adjustment in later periods of childhood. The effects of experiencing or witnessing aggression on children's social-emotional development are well known, yet the role of conflict resolution within the family has not been sufficiently studied. Social information processing models suggests that children who experience positive forms of conflict resolution within the family are likely to generalize these experiences and related skills outside the family, and thus deve

Psychopathy and Sexual Aggression: Management Implications.

The current study explored the association between psychopathic traits and release suitability decisions and examined the role of Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) and Static-99 in predicting general and sexual recidivism. The sample included 207 adult male sex offenders involved in the long-term follow-up at the Massachusetts Treatment Center for Sexually Dangerous Persons (MTC) in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. Contrary to our expectations, PCL-R Factor 2 (Lifestyle/Antisocial) scores were positively associated with being selected for gradual release, whereas PCL-R Factor 1 (Interpersonal/A

Suicidal behavior and aggression-related disorders.

Studies of suicidal behavior among those with aggression-related disorders (i.e. intermittent explosive disorder, borderline personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, and conduct disorder) were examined. The presence of an aggressive disorder generally increased the risk of suicide attempts and mortality, with this effect (when examined) usually existing independent of other psychopathology. However, this may not be the case for antisocial personality disorder. Furthermore, with the exception of intermittent explosive disorder, the extant research suggests severity of aggression w

Psychopharmacology of Persistent Violence and Aggression.

Persistent violence not due to acute psychosis or mania can be managed only after appropriate characterization of the aggressive episodes (psychotic, impulsive, or predatory/planned/instrumental). The type of violence combined with the psychiatric diagnosis dictates the evidence-based pharmacologic approaches for psychotically motivated and impulsive aggression, whereas instrumental violence mandates forensic/behavioral strategies. For nonacute inpatients, schizophrenia spectrum disorders, traumatic brain injury, and dementia comprise the majority of individuals who are persistently aggressive

The neurobiology of aggression and violence.

Aggression and violence represent a significant public health concern and a clinical challenge for the mental healthcare provider. A great deal has been revealed regarding the neurobiology of violence and aggression, and an integration of this body of knowledge will ultimately serve to advance clinical diagnostics and therapeutic interventions. We will review here the latest findings regarding the neurobiology of aggression and violence. First, we will introduce the construct of aggression, with a focus on issues related to its heterogeneity, as well as the importance of refining the aggressio

Deep Brain Stimulation in Pathological Aggression.

BACKGROUND: We describe a case of deep brain stimulation in a patient with severe aggression refractory to conservative treatment. The targets of the stimulation were set bilaterally in the posteromedial hypothalamus and - in a second procedure due to its ineffectiveness - in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) bilaterally. METHODS: In the first stage, we implanted electrodes into the posteromedial hypothalamus, after obtaining consent of the Bioethics Committee. In the early postoperative period, we observed significant improvement in the range of 50-90% in terms of quantity and quality of the atta

Antiepileptics for aggression and associated impulsivity.

BACKGROUND: Aggression is a major public health issue and is integral to several mental health disorders. Antiepileptic drugs may reduce aggression by acting on the central nervous system to reduce neuronal hyper-excitability associated with aggression. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of antiepileptic drugs in reducing aggression and associated impulsivity. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, metaRegister of Controlled Trials (mRCT) and ClinicalTrials.gov to April 2009. We also searched Cochrane Schizophrenia Group's register of trials on aggression,

Treatment of aggression in Tourette syndrome.

The largely non-specific and/or multiply-determined etiologies of aggressive symptoms in TS pose significant impediments to effective clinical management. At this time, treatment requires comprehensive neuropsychiatric assessment with a systematic prioritization of the different psychiatric co-morbidities that require intervention. Medication side effects, psychosocial stressors and environmental triggers must also be identified and addressed. The future elucidation of meaningful clinical and genetic subtypes of TS will have important consequences for the more specific prevention and treatment

Developmental psychopathology and neurobiology of aggression.

The aim of this paper is to clarify how neural mechanisms at the molecular level, specifically the serotonergic (5-HT) system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis system (HPA) in conjunction with early life stress may contribute to the emergence of aggression, self-directed and otherwise, in borderline personality disorder (BPD). Chronic dysregulation of these biological systems, which function to regulate stress and emotion, may potentiate the development of impulsive aggression in borderline personality conditions. Our central premise in this paper is that brain development, stress re

Sexual aggression: mad, bad, and mad.

Legal institutions in the Western liberal tradition ordinarily rely primarily on the criminal justice system to address conduct by some individuals that deliberately harms other individuals. The mental health system provides an alternative institutional structure through which societies can address such harmful behavior. Those who deliberately engage in conduct that causes harm to others are traditionally addressed through either the criminal justice or mental health systems on the basis of their being categorized as either "bad or mad." This paper examines some of the relevant reasons for cat

Attachment style and self-reported aggression.

The present study examined the relationship between attachment style and self-reported aggression in a sample of young women (N = 139). Analysis showed that 27.3% of the subjects classified themselves as insecurely, i.e., avoidantly or ambivalently, attached by means of the Adult Attachment Questionnaire of Hazan and Shaver. In addition, the insecurely attached subjects had elevated anger and hostility compared to securely attached subjects.

Measurement of aggression in psychiatric patients.

This article analyzes, describes, and characterizes the methods used for measuring aggression in studies on psychiatric patients. The authors reviewed all studies published between 1985 and 1994 in seven major psychiatric journals and found 103 studies on adult aggression and 43 on childhood and adolescent aggression. Almost half (44.7%) of the adult studies and 23.3% of the child and adolescent studies did not use any structured instrument; the remainder used a total of 52 different instruments, indicating that the methodology in this area is not well established. The methods used for measuri

Aggression among psychiatric inpatients in Greece.

We studied, during 5 consecutive days, the prevalence, types and demographic, historical and clinical correlates of overt aggression in a population of 136 acute and chronic inpatients with mainly a diagnosis of psychotic disorder. Almost one fourth of them exhibited some sort of aggressive behavior. Verbal aggression was by far the most frequent type followed-in decreasing order-by physical aggression, aggression against property and self-aggression. Past threats of violence and attacks on others as well as concurrent motor excitement, agitation, low tolerance of frustration, difficulty in de

[Depression and aggression in Amish persons].

The Old Order Amish are a conservative, anabaptistic religious community of Swiss origin in the USA. They practise absolute pacifism and lead a life free of hostility and aggression. Depression, however, is as much as three times more frequent in Amish populations. In order to study the possible relationship between hostility and depression, we investigated 43 Amish people, using the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory and the Beck Depression Inventory. As expected, the total hostility score was significantly lower and the depression score significantly higher in comparison to the normal populatio

Frustration-aggression hypothesis: examination and reformulation.

Examines the Dollard et al. (1939) frustration-aggression hypothesis. The original formulation's main proposition is limited to interference with an expected attainment of a desired goal on hostile (emotional) aggression. Although some studies have yielded negative results, others support the core proposition. Frustrations can create aggressive inclinations even when they are not arbitrary or aimed at the subject personally. Interpretations and attributions can be understood partly in terms of the original analysis but they can also influence the unpleasantness of the thwarting. A proposed rev

[Motives and interpersonal functions of aggression].

In this review, the author theoretically and empirically examined motives and interpersonal functions of aggression. A factor-analysis of Averill's questionnaire items on anger revealed that motives involved in aggressive responses were clustered into two groups: the hostile and the instrumental. It was also clarified that an individual is likely to engage in aggression particularly when some hostile motives are evoked. Concerning the interpersonal functions, the author proposed that aggression might serve four principal goals. (1) Aggression can be generated as an avoidance response to an ave
