[Unilateral aplasia of the cerebellum in Aicardi's syndrome].

A case of unilateral aplasia of the cerebellum in a girl with Aicardi's syndrome is described. Aplasia of an entire hemisphere is one of the least frequent malformations of the cerebellum. Hypoplasia, partial hemispheric defects of the cerebellum and, rarely, complete absence of one hemisphere have been described in Aicardi's syndrome, which is associated with multiple systemic and CNS malformations. In our patient, who presented the characteristic trial of infantile spasms, callosal agenesia and retinal lacuna, we also saw right cerebellar aplasia along with other CNS malformations using magn

EEG recognition of holoprosencephaly and Aicardi syndrome.

Two cases of alobar holoprosencephaly and two of Aicardi syndrome are reported for their highly specific electroencephalographic (EEG) changes. The asynchronous sharp waves and spikes over the frontal regions with decreasing gradient of potential to the occipital leads were seen in alobar holoprosencephaly while burst suppression pattern with total asynchrony between the two hemispheres was seen in Aicardi syndrome. Even though EEG changes cannot be pathognomic of any abnormality, it is suggested that as in conditions like subacute sclerosing panencephalitis and petitmal epilepsy, so also in a…

[Aicardi's syndrome. Report of 2 cases].

Aicardi's syndrome is a clinical entity characterized by agenesis of the corpus callosum, severe mental subnormality, seizures (most frequently spasms in flexion), characteristic electroencephalographic changes (burst-suppression pattern), typical chorioretinal lacunae, present only in females. Other associated findings are rib and vertebral dysplasias; frequently found are cortical heterotopias. This syndrome is of hereditary origin, now considered a probable X-linked dominant trait with male lethality. The authors describe two cases of this syndrome with the full clinical picture.

[Electroclinical characteristics of seizures in the Aicardi syndrome].

Electro-clinical patterns of seizures were studied in 7 infants with Aicardi Syndrome. In all 7 cases, partial seizure preceded the appearance of asymetrical spasms. Partial seizures and spasms were recorded by polygraphing tracings of long duration. There was a constant correlation between the EEG localization of partial seizures and the side of asymetrical spasms. In 6 cases, a cluster of spasms followed the partial discharge whereas in the 7th case, the partial discharge appeared in the middle of the cluster. Therefore, both partial seizure and cluster of spasms seem to be part of the same …

Anomalies of retinal architecture in Aicardi syndrome.

Eyes obtained at autopsy from a female infant with Aicardi syndrome (chorioretinal lacunae, agenesis of the corpus callosum, and seizures) were studied by light and electron microscopy. The retinal insertion was displaced anteriorly over the ciliary body, the choroid was attenuated, and the retinal pigment epithelium showed hyperplasia and pigment migration throughout the sensory retina. Rosettes of photoreceptorlike cells and inversion of the photoreceptor layer were found. A hole within a lacuna showed total absence of the sensory retina. Optic disc epipapillary tissue consisted of glial and…

Aicardi's syndrome - report of an autopsy case.

A Japanese girl aged 19 months had generalized convulsions, agenesis of the corpus callosum, peculiar chorioretinopathy, scoliosis and marked retardation of psychomotor development. Pathological investigation revealed polymicrogyria, cortical heterotopias, disorganization of the cerebellar cortex. In ocular histopathology, lacunae were composed of hypo- or depigmented zones of the retinal pigment epithelium accompanied with dispersion of pigments into the rod and cone layer. Coloboma of the optic nerve was also evident. There was no evidence of inflammation or pathogenic organisms.

PNPT1 mutations may cause Aicardi-Goutières-Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Aicardi-Goutières syndrome (AGS) is a clinically and genetically heterogenous autoinflammatory disorder caused by constitutive activation of the type I interferon axis. It has been associated with the genes TREX1, RNASEH2A, RNASEH2B, RNASEH2C, SAMHD1, ADAR1, IFIH1. The clinical diagnosis of AGS is usually made in the context of early-onset encephalopathy in combination with basal ganglia calcification or white matter abnormalities on cranial MRI and laboratory prove of interferon I activation. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a patient with early-onset encephalopathy, severe neurodeve

Aicardi-Goutières syndrome: unusual neuro-radiological manifestations.

Aicardi-Goutières syndrome (AGS) is one of the expanding group of inherited congenital infection like syndromes. Here, we describe the detailed clinical and imaging findings of two sibs with AGS. Each shows scattered periventricular intracranial calcifications, severe global delay, seizures, microcephaly and spasticity. Interestingly, chilblains were observed in the two sisters as well as their parents and a paternal uncle. The brain MRI of the older sister showed marked ventricular dilatation as a result of unusual associated porencephalic cysts. Unexpectedly, unilateral cerebellar hypoplasia

[Aicardi syndrome with Dandy-Walker type malformation].

INTRODUCTION: Aicardi syndrome (OMIM 304050) was first described in 1965. Its classic triad consists of infantile spasms, partial or total agenesis of the corpus callosum and ocular disorders, such as chorioretinal lacunae. It has been posited that it is due to a mechanism involving X-linked dominant inheritance. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a full-term female, with no pathological familial history or parental consanguinity, with a prenatal diagnosis of Dandy-Walker type malformation, who presented convulsions, coloboma of the optic nerve, thoracic vertebral block with presence of scoli…

[Aicardi syndrome associated with severe congenital ptosis].

Aicardi syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by corpus callosum agenesis, chorioretinal lacunae and early-onset infantile spasms. We report a particular case of Aicardi syndrome characterized by the association of the classical triad of severe bilateral ptosis, pontocerebellar hypoplasia, and perisylvian polymicrogyria in a girl born to non-consanguineous parents, but whose mother suffered from idiopathic generalized epilepsy.

Orbital ectopic brain tissue in Aicardi syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Aicardi syndrome is a cerebroretinal disorder originally described in 1965. Its salient clinical features are infantile spasms, agenesis of corpus callosum, hypsarrhythmia, and a pathognomonic optic disc appearance consisting of multiple depigmented chorioretinal lacunae clustered around the disc. METHODS: Clinical report with cranial computed tomography and biopsy results. RESULTS: A 3-year-old female patient presented with Aicardi syndrome and progressive proptosis of the left eye since birth. Visual acuity was light perception only in the right eye. Ocular motility examination…

Brain lactic alkalosis in Aicardi-Goutières syndrome.

Aicardi-Goutières syndrome is a rare progressive encephalopathy characterized by acquired microcephaly, basal ganglia calcification, and chronic CSF lymphocytosis, raised levels of interferon alpha in CSF and plasma and chill-blain type lesions. A possible mechanism of injury is cytokine related microangiopathy. We report brain imaging and proton (1H) and phosphorus-31 (31P) magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) findings during the first year after birth in two patients. In patient 1 the evolution of brain metabolite ratios and intracellular pH obtained from serial 1H (long TE) and 31P MRS stu

Aicardi-Goutières syndrome: differential diagnosis and aetiopathogenesis.

Aicardi-Goutières syndrome (AGS) is a progressive encephalopathy with onset in the first year of life and a recessive autosomal pattern of inheritance. The syndrome is characterised by acquired microcephaly, basal ganglia calcifications, white matter abnormalities, chronic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) lymphocytosis and raised interferon-alpha (INF-alpha) in the CSF. AGS is diagnosed on the basis of a clinical picture characterised by microcephaly and by the onset of encephalopathy associated with severe psychomotor delay, spasticity and extrapyramidal signs. CT is very important in the diagnosis
