The sensitivity and specificity of control surface injuries in aircraft accident fatalities.

Among the important determinations that aircraft crash investigators try to make is which occupant of an aircraft was attempting to control the aircraft at the time of the crash. The presence or absence of certain injuries of the extremities is used to help make this determination. These "control surface injuries" reportedly occur when crash forces are applied to a pilot's hands and feet through the aircraft's controls. We sought to clarify the significance of these injuries and the frequency with which their presence indicates that the decedent was the person that might have been trying to co

Exposure assessment for a large epidemiological study of aircraft manufacturing workers.

Methods were developed to assess exposure to a wide variety of chemicals for nearly 80,000 workers involved in manufacturing aircraft since 1928. The facilities, now closed, consisted of four major plants, over 200 buildings, and a changing workforce during 60 years of operation. To access chemical exposures by specific jobs and calendar years, we reviewed complete work histories, examined detailed job descriptions available going back to 1940, interviewed long-term employees, conducted walk-through visits of aircraft manufacturing plants, reviewed comprehensive environmental assessment report

Human factors in aircraft incidents: results of a 7-year study.

Human error causes or contributes to considerably over half of all aviation mishaps. This report describes a 7-year study of aircraft incident data conducted in an attempt to further our understanding of the phenomenon of human error. The study of incidents as a surrogate for aircraft accidents is relevant only if incidents constitute a population or universe of which accidents are a subset. This assumption has been examined in a study of over 35,000 reports of aviation incidents collected from 1976-83 by the NASA Aviation Safety Reporting System. One-third of the reports involve conflicts amo

Effects of aircraft motion on passengers' comfort ratings and response times.

Comfort ratings and response times for changes in the experienced level of comfort were examined in 20 subjects using the NASA Flight Research Center's Jetstar aircraft modified to carry the GPAS system (General Purpose Airborne Simulator). Data were obtained for each of the subjects during two runs of 10 1-min. flight segments. In general, as the magnitude of aircraft motion increased in either the vertical or transverse (lateral) directions, there was an increase in feelings of discomfort and a decrease in response times to those changes. These results suggest parallels between the large bod

A comparison of Freon- and water-based insecticidal aerosols for aircraft disinsection.

In Miami, USA, passenger compartments of wide-bodied jet aircraft were disinsected at "blocks away" or while parked. The application of 2% Freon- and water-based formulations of (+)-phenothrin at about 35 g/100 m(3) was highly effective against mosquitos and flies in all instances. More basic research is needed on water-based aerosols.

Application of radioimmunoassay techniques in support of toxicologic investigations of aircraft accidents.

With the increased emphasis on establishing the presence or absence of drugs associated with aircraft accidents and the fact that fragmentation of tissue may be a problem in investigating these accidents, the need arises for a rapid, sensitive, and specific toxicologic means for detecting drugs that may be present in nanogram concentrations and when only extremely limited quantities of specimens are avialable for study. The use of radioimmunoassay (RIA) for the detection of drugs (e.g., amphetamines, barbiturates, opiates, and methaqualone) in selected aircraft accident cases is presented.

Transformation of BTEX compounds emitted by aircraft engines at ground level.

Volatile organic compounds, such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) are emitted during the various aviation activities at ground level, such as take-off, approach and taxiing, that take place at or near airports. In addition to causing adverse health effects, these compounds are precursors of secondary aerosols (SOAs). The expected growth in air traffic in the near future makes it necessary to anticipate and control these emissions. As part of the AVIATOR project (EU Horizon2020), gaseous samples were collected in sorbent tubes and analysed by GC/MS, including emissions of co

[Air pollutant emissions of aircraft in China in recent 30 years].

Although aircrafts are of great importance in transportation in China, there has been rare study on air pollutant emissions of aircrafts until now. Based on the annually statistical data collected by the Statistic Center of Civil Aviation of China, using the emission factor method derived from fuel consumption, the air pollutant emissions of aircrafts during 1980-2009 were calculated, and their emission intensities and dynamic characteristics were analyzed. The results show that the emissions of SO2, CO, NO(x) and HC from aircrafts of China Civil Aviation increased from 0.31 thousand, 1.89 tho

Saliva cortisol and exposure to aircraft noise in six European countries.

BACKGROUND: Several studies show an association between exposure to aircraft or road traffic noise and cardiovascular effects, which may be mediated by a noise-induced release of stress hormones. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to assess saliva cortisol concentration in relation to exposure to aircraft noise. METHOD: A multicenter cross-sectional study, HYENA (Hypertension and Exposure to Noise near Airports), comprising 4,861 persons was carried out in six European countries. In a subgroup of 439 study participants, selected to enhance the contrast in exposure to aircraft noise, saliva cortiso

The influence of ozone on self-evaluation of symptoms in a simulated aircraft cabin.

Simulated 4-h flights were carried out in a realistic model of a three-row, 21-seat section of an aircraft cabin that was reconstructed inside a climate chamber. Twenty-nine female subjects, age 19-27 years, were split into two groups; each group was exposed to four conditions: two levels of ozone (<2 and 60-80 p.p.b.) at two outside air supply rates (2.4 and 4.7 l/s per person). A companion study measured the chemicals present in the cabin air during each of the simulated flights. The subjects completed questionnaires to provide subjective assessments of air quality and symptoms typical of co

Susceptibility to motion sickness in fish: a parabolic aircraft flight study.

Juvenile swordtail fish and larval cichlids were subjected to parabolic aircraft flights (PAFs) and individually observed. After the PAFs, inner ear otoliths and sensory epithelia were examined on the light microscopical level. Otolith asymmetry (differences in otolith size between the left and the right side) was especially pronounced in those fish, who exhibited a kinetotic behaviour (e.g., spinning movements) during microgravity. This speaks in favour of a theoretical concept according to which susceptibility to space motion sickness in humans may be based on asymmetric inner ear stones. Th

Wastewater surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 from aircraft to citywide monitoring.

Wastewater monitoring is highly efficient in SARS-CoV-2 surveillance for tracking virus spread through travel, surpassing traditional airport passenger testing. This study explored the links between SARS-CoV-2 contents and variants from aircraft to city, assessing the impact of detected variants from international travellers versus the local population. A total of 969 variants using next-generation sequencing (NGS) were examined to understand the links between-aircraft, Arlanda airport, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), and Stockholm city-and compared these to variants detected in Stockholm

Hypoxia-Like Events in UK Typhoon Aircraft from 2008 to 2017.

INTRODUCTION: Recent reports of in-flight, hypoxia-like events have prompted concern that aircraft life support systems (LSS) may not always provide effective altitude protection. An analysis was undertaken of hypoxia-like incidents reported in a UK front-line combat aircraft.METHODS: A search of the UK Aviation Safety Information Management System database identified all Typhoon Defense Air Safety Occurrence Reports (DASORs) notifying in-flight symptoms over the decade 20082017. Qualitative analysis focused on the event narrative, altitude profile, timeline, symptom description, sortie charac

Network Model for Optimal Aircraft Location for Human Organ Transportation Activities.

BACKGROUND: The efficiency of transport phases is a key factor in successful organ transplant operations. Reliability, safety, and punctuality must be in compliance with the European Union and national frameworks and be consistent with economic, quantitative, and level-of-service parameters. In this study we investigated the optimal numbers and locations of aircraft in the Italian territory by comparing performance indexes related to different time intervals and service design scenarios. METHODS: An integer linear programming model is described as an optimal service solution for covering the

Desensitization to strong vestibular stimuli improves tolerance to simulated aircraft motion.

INTRODUCTION: The extent to which tolerance acquired in one motion environment can be transferred to another has not been fully elucidated. This study compares three provocative motion stimuli and whether tolerance acquired from cross-coupled motion and torso rotation can be transferred to simulated aircraft motion. METHOD: There were 18 healthy subjects (9 men and 9 women), 18-44 yr of age, who were divided into 3 groups. Each group was exposed to the following desensitization procedure in a pseudo-random repeated measures design. In condition D1, subjects were exposed to 4 consecutive days

Alcohol associated with fatal light aircraft accidents, United Kingdom-1964-1973.

A total of 86 fatal light aircraft accidents in the United Kingdom from January 1964 to December 1973 are reviewed, in which tissue alcohol determinations were undertaken on 102 pilots. Alcohol was detected in 34 cases varying from small amounts of 313 mg/100 ml. The difficulties of interpretation of post mortem tissue alcohol levels are discussed with particular reference to those cases with measured alcohols in excess of 20 mg/100 ml a level taken as possibly significant in context of accident causation. There was 12 pilots, involved in 10 of the 86 fatal accidents, considered as having inge

Vision-Based Vehicle State and Behavior Analysis for Aircraft Stand Safety.

With the continuous elevation of aviation safety standards, accurate monitoring of ground support vehicles in aircraft stand areas has become a critical task for enhancing overall aircraft stand operational safety. Given the limitations of existing surface movement radar and multi-camera surveillance systems in terms of cost, deployment complexity, and coverage, this paper proposes a lightweight vision-based framework for vehicle state perception and spatiotemporal behavior analysis oriented toward aircraft stand safety. Leveraging existing fixed monocular monitoring resources in the stand are
