[Alcohol drinking and peripheral arterial disease of lower extremity].

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is defined as an atherosclerotic disease in the lower extremities and is characterized by its symptom of intermittent claudication with discomfort and pain at posterior cruris. Various abnormalities of vascular endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells and platelets induced by risk factors of PAD are involved in its pathogenesis. The most important risk factors are ageing, smoking and diabetes mellitus. Dyslipidemia and hypertension are also classical risk factors of PAD. A lesion of PAD in the lower extremity is prone to be more distal in patients with diabetes

Alcohol consumption, drinking pattern, and self-reported visual impairment.

PURPOSE: To examine whether alcohol drinking status and drinking pattern are associated with self-reported visual impairment. METHODS: We used data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a state-based telephone health survey conducted by random-digit dialing among non-institutionalized US adults. The Visual Impairment and Access to Eye Care module was implemented among 42, 713 adults aged 50 years and older in 2005 and 2006. Visual impairment was defined as any degree of difficulty experienced in recognizing a friend across the street or reading print in newspaper, magazine, rec

Corticosteroid-dependent plasticity mediates compulsive alcohol drinking in rats.

Alcoholism is characterized by a compulsion to seek and ingest alcohol, loss of control over intake, and the emergence of a negative emotional state during abstinence. We hypothesized that sustained activation of neuroendocrine stress systems (e.g., corticosteroid release via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis) by alcohol intoxication and withdrawal and consequent alterations in glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) activation drive compulsive alcohol drinking. Our results showed that rats exposed to alcohol vapor to the point of dependence displayed increased a

Oral infection, regular alcohol drinking pattern, and myocardial infarction.

Oral infections have been associated with an increased risk for myocardial infarction (MI) and other cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Conversely, low, regular alcohol consumption is associated with a lower association of CVD. The objective was to test the novel hypothesis that oral infections are modified by regular alcohol drinking which has the effect of lowering the incidence of MI's. The effect has been observed where tooth extractions where carried out due to infections and compared with extractions unconnected to infections. Oral infections and in particular periodontal infections impose a

[Review of relationship between alcohol drinking and esophageal varices].

The adequate treatment for patients with thrombocytopenia, encephalopathy, ascites and esophagogastric varices due to portal hypertension are very important. This review explains the relations between heavy drinkers and symptoms of portal hypertension, especially with regard to the form of esophageal varices. Between heavy drinker and non-heavy drinker, there was no significant differences for form, color and red color sign of varices. In heavy drinker, the ratio of strong red color sign might be higher than non-heavy drinker. Value of portal pressure in heavy drinker might be higher. These re

Alcohol drinking: abnormal intake caused by tetrahydropapaveroline in brain.

Tetrahydropapaveroline (THP), a dopamine-dopaldehyde condensation product, was delivered directly into the cerebral ventricle of rats automatically every 15 minutes for 12 days. The animals were given access to both water and ethylalcohol, the latter being presented in 12 concentrations from 3 to 30 percent. Within 3 to 6 days of the start of the infusion of THP, the rats, which normally rejected alcohol, drank alcohol solutions in increasingly excessive amounts; this was accompanied by symptoms that were similar to those of withdrawal and intoxication. These results provide evidence that an a

Effects of aripiprazole on alcohol intake in an animal model of high-alcohol drinking.

AIMS: This study examined the effects of aripiprazole, a novel atypical antipsychotic drug with partial agonist properties at dopamine D2 receptors, on the voluntary limited access alcohol drinking of alcohol-preferring AA (Alko, Alcohol) rats. METHODS: AA rats were taught to drink 10% alcohol in a 4 h limited access paradigm. Effects of acute aripiprazole (0, 0.3, 1.0, and 3.0 mg/kg) on the limited access alcohol drinking were studied. In repeated treatment experiment, aripiprazole (0, 1.0, and 6.0 mg/kg) was administered once daily over five successive days. To reveal any effect by aripipra

Animal models of alcoholism: neurobiology of high alcohol-drinking behavior in rodents.

This review discusses efforts to develop rodent models for the study of neurobiological mechanisms underlying chronic alcohol drinking, alcoholism, and abnormal alcohol-seeking behavior. Selective breeding has produced stable lines of rats that reliably exhibit high and (for comparison purposes) low voluntary alcohol consumption. In addition, animal models of chronic ethanol self-administration have been developed in rodents, who do not have a genetic predisposition for high alcohol-seeking behavior, to explore environmental influences in ethanol drinking and the effects of physical dependence

The effects of alcohol hangover on future drinking behavior and the development of alcohol problems.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol hangover experiences in young adulthood have been shown to predict more subsequent alcohol problems. Hangover susceptibility appears to be partially heritable and related to family history of alcohol use disorders. However, very little is known about the developmental course of these associations and whether they are accounted for by an individual's drinking history. The goal of this study is to investigate the prospective and unique relationships between family history of alcohol use disorders, severity of alcohol hangover experiences in adolescence, and later alcohol us

Effect of single binge alcohol consumption on alcohol-naïve and -exposed drinking mouse models.

Binge alcohol exposure is underestimated compared to chronic intake, particularly in young or alcohol-naïve individuals. This study investigates the effects of single binge drinking, on both alcohol-naïve and alcohol-dependent drinking subjects. C57BL/6J mice received a binge ethanol dose (6 g/kg body weight; 40 % ethanol(v/v)), and subsequent haematological, hepatic, transcriptomic, and metabolomic changes were analyzed. In naïve mice, binge alcohol elevated serum AST levels, indicating acute liver injury. In ethanol-dependent mice (20 g/kg/day; 6 % ethanol(v/v)), single binge episode altered

Drinking motives and alcohol sensitivity mediate multi-dimensional genetic influences on alcohol use behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Genetic influences account for a substantial proportion of individual differences in alcohol use behaviors (AUBs). However, multiple distinct sets of genes are linked to different AUBs, which may explain their dramatic variability in risk factors and manifestations. In this study, we explore whether intermediate neurobiological traits and alcohol-related cognitions mediate the relationship between polygenic scores (PGS) and multiple AUBs, with the aim to better understand processes captured by different genetic profiles. METHODS: Using results from prior genome-wide association st

Combining energy drinks and alcohol - a recipe for trouble?

BACKGROUND: Combining energy drinks (such as 'Red Bull(®)') with alcohol is becoming increasingly popular, particularly among young people. However, as yet, limited research has been conducted examining the harms associated with this form of drinking. OBJECTIVE: To review current evidence associated with combining energy drinks with alcohol and provide recommendations for addressing this issue within primary care. DISCUSSION: Combining alcohol with energy drinks can mask the signs of alcohol intoxication, resulting in greater levels of alcohol intake, dehydration, more severe and prolonged h

Drinking by alcoholic patients following hospital admission.

Ad lib fluid intake of abstinent alcoholics and alcoholics in acute withdrawal exceeded that of psychiatric controls for 3 d following admission to hospital. The urinary output of abstinent alcoholics reflected their high fluid intake, but alcoholics in withdrawal displayed an initial oliguria. Routine blood and urine analysis did not provide any evidence of dehydration among alcoholics in withdrawal. Some possible causal factors contributing to a generalized alcoholic polydipsia are outlined.

Differences and similarities in development of drinking behavior between alcoholic offspring of alcoholics and alcoholic offspring of non-alcoholics.

Self-reported initial, early, and long-term drinking behaviors, experiences, and consequences were obtained from male alcoholics completing inpatient treatment. Subjects were recruited and selected on the basis that they met DSM-III criteria for diagnosis of alcohol dependency and that their biological fathers were alcoholic (FHP; Family History Positive) or that they had no biological family history of alcoholism (FHN; Family History Negative). Results indicated that FHP subjects rated their initial taste of beer higher than FHN subjects, that FHP subjects began tasting and subsequently regul
