Progressive Neuronal Degeneration Leading to Impaired Motor Function: A Case of Alcohol-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy.

Alcoholic peripheral neuropathy involves degeneration of the peripheral motor neurons, typically in the lower extremities, accompanied by painful sensations and impairments in gait as a direct result of alcohol's toxicity on the nervous system. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, and many factors, such as use history, comorbidities, lifestyle, and family history, determine the disease course and success of treatment. Laboratory values include deficiencies in many key nutrients for neuron health, including vitamin B1 (thiamine), vitamin B12, and folic acid. Here, we discuss a case of a 31-y

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation and Aerobic Exercise for Alcohol-Related Peripheral Neuropathy: A Case Report.

Alcohol use disorders can cause peripheral and central neurological disorders with symptoms such as pain, numbness, paresthesia, and dysesthesia, often impairing walking ability. However, effective treatments for alcohol-related peripheral neuropathy are yet to be identified. This case report highlights the successful use of dysesthesia-matched transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (DM-TENS) and aerobic exercise in a 53-year-old woman with alcohol-related peripheral neuropathy who presented with severe pain and walking difficulties. Initially, her pain and numbness were scored 8-9 on the

Bilateral optic neuropathy related to severe anemia in a patient with alcoholic cirrhosis: a case report and review of the literature.

Anemia appears frequently in patients with alcoholic liver disease (ALD) but has never been linked to bilateral nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). A 65-year-old woman with a medical history of alcoholic cirrhosis was admitted for bilateral NAION. On admission, she was found to have a low arterial pressure and severe normocytic anemia (48 g/L). The anemia was related to chronic bleeding due to antral gastritis along with other factors associated with ALD. The applied treatment consisted of urgent transfusion followed by high doses of proton-pump inhibitors, iron and vitami

Prolongation of the QTc-interval reflects the severity of autonomic neuropathy in primary biliary cirrhosis and in other non-alcoholic liver diseases.

It was the aim of our study to prove a potential correlation (a) between laboratory findings of cholestasis and autonomic neuropathy (AN) and (b) between the severity of AN and the prolongation of the corrected QT-time (QTc). The five standard tests of autonomic cardiac neuropathy were investigated. QTc was calculated according to Bazett's formula. 12 out of 14 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis, 18 out of 21 patients with HBsAg positive liver diseases and 11 out of 14 patients with cirrhosis of other origin had AN. No significant correlation between the laboratory parameters of cholestas

Transcriptomic and network analyses of an alcohol-induced peripheral neuropathy model identify putative role for histone demethylase Jmjd1c.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-induced peripheral neuropathy (AIPN) is a painful and prevalent condition associated with chronic alcohol use, yet its molecular underpinnings remain poorly understood. Because the analgesic effects of ethanol may reinforce alcohol consumption, elucidating the mechanisms driving AIPN is essential. This study aimed to identify ethanol-regulated gene expression patterns in the nervous system of a mouse model of AIPN. METHODS: Male (n = 10) and female (n = 12) C57BL/6J mice were administered either an ethanol-containing Lieber-DeCarli liquid diet at 5% or an isocaloric contro

Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy in Older Individuals Because of Increased Alcohol Consumption During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a disorder affecting oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria. A majority of affected patients are men of 15 to 35 years of age. Phenotypic penetrance of this condition is only 50% in man and 10% in women and increases if the cellular energy demands go up, with the most common risk factors being smoking and alcohol use. METHODS: Review of clinical features of 3 patients who were diagnosed with LHON in their sixth decade of life after doubling their alcohol intake during the recent COVID-19 pandemic. RESULTS: All 3 patients were older

Bilateral vision loss due to Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy after long-term alcohol, nicotine and drug abuse.

PURPOSE: Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy is relatively rare, and no clinical pathognomonic signs exist. We present a rare case of bilateral vision loss of a patient with multiple drug abuse in the history. OBSERVATION: A 31-year-old man presented with a history of progressive, decreased vision in both eyes for 6 month. On examination, his visual acuity was hand motion in both eyes. Funduscopy demonstrated a temporal pallor of the optic disc. Goldmann visual field perimetry showed a crescent visual field in the right eye and a circular decrease to less than 50 ° in the left eye. Antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of dihydroaustrasulfone alcohol in alleviating peripheral neuropathy via Nrf2/HO-1 pathway in rats.

Peripheral neuropathic pain is closely associated with neuroinflammation and oxidative stress accumulation in the spinal cord dorsal horn (SCDH), but effective treatments remain limited. Dihydroaustrasulfone alcohol (WA25), a synthetic precursor of austrasulfone obtained from a Formosan soft coral, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. However, its potential therapeutic effect on neuropathic pain is yet to be established. This study aimed to elucidate the cellular mechanisms responsible for therapeutic potential of WA25 in rats with neuropathic pain. Neuropathic pain was induced in

Elevated liver enzymes and fasting glucose levels correlate with neuropathy in patients diagnosed with alcohol use disorder independently of the blood thiamine levels.

AIMS: Chronic alcohol consumption is well known to cause peripheral neuropathy, affecting both small and large nerve fibers. The aim of this study was to correlate biochemical and neurophysiological findings and investigate possible biomarkers and risk factors for pathogenetic mechanisms of neuropathy in patients diagnosed with alcohol use disorder (AUD). METHODS: Ninety patients diagnosed with AUD were enrolled in this prospective study over a period of 3 years. Serum biochemical parameters, as well as thiamine blood levels, were determined upon admission. Every subject was assessed by clini

Prenatal alcohol exposure dysregulates spinal and circulating immune cell circular RNA expression in adult female rats with chronic sciatic neuropathy.

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy is associated with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) that results in a continuum of central nervous system (CNS) deficits. Emerging evidence from both preclinical and clinical studies indicate that the biological vulnerability to chronic CNS disease in FASD populations is driven by aberrant neuroimmune actions. Our prior studies suggest that, following minor nerve injury, prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is a risk factor for developing adult-onset chronic pathological touch sensitivity or allodynia. Allodynia in PAE rats occurs concurrently with height

Interleukin-1 beta and Interleukin-6 serum concentrations correlate with neuropathy and liver enzyme levels in patients diagnosed with alcohol use disorder.

Peripheral neuropathy is a common clinical manifestation in patients diagnosed with alcohol use disorder (AUD). The pathogenesis of alcohol-related neuropathy is under investigation and there are insufficient data to support the hypothesis of a possible immune-mediated pathway. In this study, we correlated serum cytokine concentrations with neurophysiological and biochemical findings and investigated possible risk factors, pathogenetic mechanisms and biomarkers of neuropathy in patients with AUD. Ninety patients with AUD (54 with neuropathy and 36 without neuropathy) and sixty-eight age- and g

Smoking and alcohol, health-related quality of life and psychiatric comorbidities in Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy mutation carriers: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a rare mitochondrial disorder, characterized by acute or subacute bilateral vision loss, frequently leading to significant chronic disability, mainly in young people. The causal LHON mutations of the mitochondrial DNA have incomplete penetrance, with the highest risk of disease manifestation for male mutation carriers in the second and third decades of life. Here we evaluated smoking, alcohol drinking habits, health-related quality of life (QOL) and psychiatric comorbidities in a cohort of LHON patients and asymptomatic mutation carrier
