An evidence-based toolset to capture, measure and assess emotional health.

We present: (1) an automated telephone check-in system to capture emotional health, based on automatic emotion classification, crowd-sourcing, and the experience sampling method; (2) a method that combines acoustic-based and perception-based emotion classifiers to maximize the likelihood of correctly identifying the emotion in a speech recording; (3) an evidence-based toolkit to measure and assess emotional health; and (4) the results of three experimental trials held in 2010 and 2011: (a) English speaking members of Alcoholics Anonymous, (b) English and French speaking general population, and

Attitudes of mental health professionals toward alcoholism recognition and treatment.

The attitudes of 100 urban mental health professionals toward alcoholism diagnosis and treatment were assessed using a 23-item questionnaire. A significant number of those sampled, physicians more than other professional groups, looked upon alcoholism as a disease in its own right. Physicians, attendings more than residents, subscribed to a more medical history-taking model. While the majority of those surveyed would advise complete sobriety, a large number would not. Likewise, despite a large percentage of our sample who indicated familiarity with alcohol-related concepts, a significant numbe

Saying goodbye to the hero: Jung, Liber Novus and conversion from addiction.

Two chapters in Liber Novus throw fresh light on Jung's epistemology of addiction. Taking these as a starting point, the nature of the challenges that patients confront in leaving addiction behind are explored. It is suggested that an archetypal process of separation is constellated at the point of quitting as the precursor to a life without the object of the addiction. A short account is given of Jung's part in the inception of Alcoholics Anonymous and the potential role of a 'conversion experience' as an initiation into psychological reorientation away from the negative individuation experie

12-Step Participation Is Linked to Lower Drinking and Specific Impulsive Personality Traits in Early Alcohol Use Disorder Recovery.

OBJECTIVE: Participation in 12-step groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, confers benefits among individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD), and one candidate mechanism underlying these effects is reductions in impulsivity. Using a multidimensional assessment of impulsivity, the current study examined delay discounting and impulsive personality traits in a longitudinal cohort of adults with AUD initiating a significant recovery attempt. METHOD: A prospective matched-sample cohort study design compared participants who reported a clinically meaningful increase in 12-step group attendance (i.e

An ongoing process: a qualitative study of how the alcohol-dependent free themselves of addiction through progressive abstinence.

BACKGROUND: Most people being treated for alcoholism are unable to successfully quit drinking within their treatment programs. In few cases do we know the full picture of how abstinence is achieved in Taiwan. We tracked processes of abstinence in alcohol-dependency disorders, based on study evidence and results. This research explores the process of recovery from the viewpoint of the alcohol-dependent. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted in two different settings, using purpose sampling, during 2003-2004. The data were analyzed using content analysis. Participants were 32 adult

Does co-occurring social phobia interfere with alcoholism treatment adherence and relapse?

This study investigates the impact of social phobia on adherence to and outcomes 6 months following standard alcohol treatment and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) group meetings among alcohol-dependent patients with and without social phobia. In a cohort study, 300 detoxified alcohol-dependent individuals in Porto Alegre, Brazil, were interviewed during, as well as 3 and 6 months after hospital detoxification. At both follow-up points, treatment adherence was low and relapse rates were high among patients with and without social phobia, and no significant differences were seen between the two groups

The treatment of alcohol dependence.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The present review summarizes current research on the management of alcohol dependence, including pharmacotherapy, psychosocial interventions and treatment of alcohol dependence with comorbid psychiatric disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: Among recent studies, naltrexone has demonstrated the most consistent effect in reducing alcohol consumption in the context of behavioral therapy. In contrast to most previous studies, acamprosate did not show significant benefits on treatment outcomes relative to placebo. The combined use of naltrexone and acamprosate appeared to be safe and wel

Alcoholic patients' experience and attitudes on pharmacotherapy for alcoholism.

Clinical studies have demonstrated that pharmacotherapies may improve alcoholism treatment, when combined with traditional psychosocial therapies. Recently, the opioid antagonist, naltrexone, has been approved as an adjunct in alcoholism treatment, and several other pharmacotherapies for alcoholism are under development. Because of the abstinence orientation of many patients, we assessed attitudes regarding medications, and explored whether alcoholic patients would consider taking medication as part of their alcoholism treatment. Active patients (n = 127) in three alcohol treatment settings we

[Treatment and rehabilitation programs for young alcoholics: acquiring the ability through group therapies and cognitive-behavioral therapies to communicate with others to lead a new life].

UNLABELLED: The number of young alcoholics increased rapidly around Tokyo during these several years has resulted in the emergence of AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) groups consisting mainly of 20- 30-year-olds. It is well known, however, that young alcoholics are difficult to be treated in traditional alcoholic wards where most of the patients are 50- 60-years old and are treated through group therapy, such as AA or Dansyu-kai (Japanese style AA). With their immature brains and limited experience, young people are extremely vulnerable to the effects of alcohol. Young alcoholics have missed the oppo

Involvement in Sexaholics Anonymous and life satisfaction: The mediating role of meaning in life and hope.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Some people are preoccupied with their sexual urges and fantasies and lose control over their sexual behaviors, which can cause adverse consequences for their health and well-being. One of the options available for individuals seeking treatment for compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) is a self-help group based on the twelve-step program. The main purpose of the current study was to examine the direct and indirect (through meaning in life and hope) relationships between involvement in Sexaholics Anonymous (SA) and life satisfaction. METHODS: The sample consisted of

Childhood experiences of parental physical violence for alcoholic women as compared with a randomly selected household sample of women.

The effects of childhood experiences of parental violence on the development of alcoholism in women were examined by comparing a sample of 45 alcoholic women selected from local treatment agencies and Alcoholics Anonymous groups with 40 nonalcoholic women selected randomly from the population. Two-hour person-to-person interview schedules were administered to both samples. The Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS) assessed both father-to-daughter and mother-to-daughter relationships. Type of sample was regressed on each CTS subscale, controlling for presence of parental alcoholism, number of childhood

Neonatal screening for prenatal alcohol exposure: assessment of voluntary maternal participation in an open meconium screening program.

Meconium fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs) are validated biomarkers of fetal alcohol exposure. Meconium FAEE testing can potentially be used as a screen by health-care professionals to identify neonates at-risk for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, thereby permitting diagnostic follow-up of these children and early intervention in those who develop disabilities. The purpose of this study was to assess whether women would willingly partake in a screening program of this nature. This was determined by launching a pilot screening program for prenatal alcohol exposure in a high-risk obstetric unit pr

Early alcoholism treatment: the Emmanuel Movement and Richard Peabody.

The history of alcoholism treatment in the early twentieth century is outlined. The methods of the Emmanuel Movement and of Richard Peabody are described, biographical details of their main practitioners are given, the populations treated are described, and the predecessors and successors of the two methods are discussed. In addition, the two methods are compared with each other and with the methods of Alcoholics Anonymous and Freudian psychoanalysis. The founder of the E. Movement was a clergyman, Dr. Elwood Worcester, whose method was designed to treat a variety of neurotic disorders. He fel

Alcoholism between Fiction and Reality.

Alcoholism has always been emphasized in literature, narratives, and theater as its prevalence and related disability are very high, is found throughout the world, and affects women and men of all ages and social classes. There is a tragic or romantic fascination in the deep sense of personal failure that drinking is able to relieve and in the uncontrollable inability to stop drinking. These aspects have been portrayed well by fictional alcoholics in movies and novels. It has become evident that biological traits together with a complex series of psychosocial factors (e.g. negative life events

Community reinforcement and family training: an effective option to engage treatment-resistant substance-abusing individuals in treatment.

AIMS: Many individuals with substance use disorders are opposed to seeking formal treatment, often leading to disruptive relationships with concerned significant others (CSOs). This is disturbing, as untreated individuals are often associated with a variety of other addiction-related problems. Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) provides an option to the more traditional treatment and intervention approaches. The objective of this systematic review was to compare CRAFT with the Alcoholics Anonymous/Narcotics Anonymous (Al-Anon/Nar-Anon) model and the Johnson Institute intervent

Overdose history is associated with postdetoxification treatment preference for persons with opioid use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Without aftercare treatment, persons discharged from short-term inpatient detoxification for opioid use disorder are at high risk of relapse. In previous work, those who were recently homeless or had pending legal problems were more likely to prefer residential treatment for aftercare. Here, based on clinical experience, the authors hypothesize that a particular clinical factor, surviving an opioid overdose, will be associated with aftercare preference. METHODS: Between May and December 2015, the authors surveyed consecutive persons seeking inpatient opioid detoxification. To asse

Sixteen-year changes and stable remission among treated and untreated individuals with alcohol use disorders.

AIMS: This study examined changes over a 16-year interval and predictors of stable remission among previously untreated individuals with alcohol-use disorders who did not obtain help or who entered either alcoholics anonymous (AA) or professional treatment in the first year after initially seeking help. DESIGN AND MEASURES: A sample of individuals (N = 461) who initiated help-seeking was surveyed at baseline and 1, 3, 8, and 16 years later. In addition to providing information on life history of drinking at each contact point, participants described their current alcohol-related and psychosoc

[Alcohol dependence syndrome and before-discharge intervention method (BDIM)--Report 2. Statistical analysis of BDIM].

The present author has developed the structured Before-Discharge Intervention Method (BDIM), a modified version of the intervention methods by Johnson and Picard in an effort to achieve the patient's awareness of his/her problem drinking. The BDIM first involves the patient's family members and helps them recover from co-dependence on the patient's alcoholism and secondly, instructs them to write structured letters to the patient. Each letter should include a few episodes of recent and past drinking problems, and family members' concern and love for the patient, and family members' hope for hi
