Cloning, heterologous expression, and characterization of a metagenome-derived GH10 xylanase with salt and alkali tolerance from Xinjiang saline-alkali soil.

Xylanases are widely used in baking, seafood processing, and paper production, but their performance is often compromised under high-salt, acidic, or alkaline conditions, limiting broader industrial deployment. Identifying robust xylanases from saline-alkali environments is therefore of practical importance. Here, we report a GH10 xylanase gene, XynE102, mined from a saline-alkali soil metagenome from Karamay, Xinjiang. The deduced amino acid sequence shares 69.17% identity with a xylanase from Cellvibrionaceae bacterium (GenBank accession HEY7885703.1). XynE102 was cloned and heterologously e

Unveiling Alkali-Induced Redox Modulation: In-Situ Spectroscopic Insights from RWGS on Alkali-Modified ZrO2-Supported Cu Catalysts.

Alkali-modified solid catalysts represent a promising class of heterogeneous catalysts for various applications. Despite extensive research, the role of alkali metals remains debated. In this study, Na-modified ZrO2-supported Cu catalysts are synthesized using different methods for the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction to elucidate the role of Na+. Catalytic results show that activity strongly depends on the preparation method, with the one-pot approach yielding three times higher activity than wet impregnation. The one-pot method significantly enhances Cu0 dispersion, preventing the los

Characterization of an alkali- and glucose-tolerant β-glucosidase from Karamay saline-alkali soil and its structural basis for glucose tolerance.

BACKGROUND: Industrial applications of β-glucosidases are often constrained by high salinity, alkaline conditions, and glucose inhibition. RESULTS: A glycoside hydrolase family 1 β-glucosidase, B0-BG40, was mined from the metagenome of saline-alkali soil in Karamay, Xinjiang, China. When heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli, B0-BG40 exhibited optimal activity at 45 °C and pH 8.6, retaining > 60% of its maximal activity over 20-55 °C and pH 5.6-9.6. The enzyme was highly stable at 25 °C, 40 °C and 45 °C and under alkaline conditions, maintaining > 85% residual activity after prolonged

Insight into the Alkali Resistance Mechanism of FeMoTiOx Catalysts for NH3 Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO: Self-Defense Effects of MoOx for Alkali Capture.

The deactivation of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts caused by alkali metal poisoning remains an insurmountable challenge. In this study, we examined the impact of Na poisoning on the performance of Fe and Mo co-doped TiO2 (FeaMobTiOx) catalysts in the SCR reaction and revealed the related alkali resistance mechanism. On the obtained Fe1Mo2.6TiOx catalyst, the synergistic catalytic effect of uniformly dispersed FeOx and MoOx species leads to remarkable catalytic activity, with over 90% NO conversion achieved in a wide temperature range of 210-410 °C. During the Na poisoning proces

[Socio-medical significance of alkalie resistance, alkalie neutralization and skin-surface lipid content in atopic neurodermatitis and ichthyosis vulgaris (author's transl)].

In individuals free from skin diseases, the resistance and the neutralisation to alkali, and the quantity of lipids at the surface of the skin, are constitltional factors; these idiotypically (genetically) controlled factors are subject to paratypical (environmental) variations. The frequency of a reduced alkali neutralisation and of sebostasis in case of neurodermitis atopica and of ichthyosis vulgaris is not dealt with in the literature, but it results from literature findings that a pathologic alkali resistance is a facultative feature in neurodermitis atopica, while it is an obligatory one

Confinement-enhanced polarization spectroscopy in ultrathin alkali vapors.

We report measurements of the anisotropic optical response of an atomic medium confined in submicron-thick vapor cells using polarization spectroscopy. The technique enables systematic characterization of anisotropy as a function of cell thickness, temperature, and probe intensity. Owing to the extremely low optical density of these submicron cells, the medium remains optically transparent even at temperatures up to 250 °C, allowing operation far beyond the conventional thermal limits of vapor-cell spectroscopy. Under these conditions, we observe a dramatic enhancement of the anisotropic signa

Alkali Cation- and Borate-Binding States of Tartrolon Antibiotics.

The borate-binding polyketide macrolide natural products are a long-known family of bacterial antibiotics and antiparasitic agents. Among these, tartrolon E is highly potent and selective in killing eukaryotic parasites while sparing mammalian cells. However, it has been challenging to obtain, fully chemically define, and formulate the tartrolons. Here, we describe a streamlined route to obtain pure tartrolon E as a highly crystalline material. The method yielded crystals of tartrolon E, the analysis of which revealed the stable chelation of a sodium counterion. Using this chemically defined m

Milk-Alkali Syndrome: A Rare But Rising Cause of Hypercalcemia.

Milk-alkali syndrome is a condition caused by ingesting an excessive amount of calcium and absorbable alkali. It is described by the triad of elevated blood calcium levels, acute kidney injury, and metabolic alkalosis. While it was historically rare, it is starting to become more common due to the use of over-the-counter calcium-containing medications for the treatment of acid reflux and osteoporosis. We present a case of a 51-year-old male who presented with altered mental status and generalized weakness. He was noted to have severe hypercalcemia and acute kidney injury with a history of rece

Design of an antioxidant nanogel for corneal alkali burn treatment.

Corneal alkali burns are a relatively common ophthalmic emergency that can seriously endanger sight. The underlying pathogenesis of these burns is driven in part by oxidative stress-related disruption of normal epithelial repair processes in the cornea and the consequent initiation of inflammatory feedback cycles that culminate in corneal neovascularization and the long-lasting or even permanent impairment of vision. Extant treatment options for such burns are limited by suboptimal efficacy and the potential for severe adverse reactions, underscoring the urgent need to develop more efficacious

Broadband emission in alkali halides triggered by Sb3+ doping.

Broadband emission in a series of alkali chlorides are achieved by doping NaCl, KCl, and RbCl with Sb3+. These compounds show photoluminescence peaks in the visible range of 536-574 nm with long lifetimes in the microsecond range. Our findings could offer valuable insights for the development of new lead-free phosphors.

Alkali metal ion binding using cyclic polyketones.

Cyclic oligoketones composed of 3,3-dimethylpentane-2,4-diones showed crown ether-like alkali metal ion binding behavior with association constants up to 1.7 × 104 M-1 in chloroform/acetonitrile (v/v, 9/1). The binding properties have been used for catalysis in the Finkelstein reaction in a low-polarity solvent. Furthermore, novel ion-binding hosts were generated by terminal functionalization of linear polyketones.

Milk-Alkali syndrome induced by H1N1 influenza vaccine.

Milk-Alkali syndrome (MAS) consists of a triad of hypercalcemia, metabolic alkalosis, and acute renal failure. We hereby report a 75-year-old Indian gentleman who presented to our emergency department with a history of generalized weakness and easy fatigability. Investigations were consistent with MAS secondary to calcium carbonate and calcitriol treatment to prevent osteoporosis, aggravated by H1N1 influenza vaccine. The patient was treated with hemodialysis and zoledronate. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of such association in the literature.

Mechanisms of Retinal Damage after Ocular Alkali Burns.

Alkali burns to the eye constitute a leading cause of worldwide blindness. In recent case series, corneal transplantation revealed unexpected damage to the retina and optic nerve in chemically burned eyes. We investigated the physical, biochemical, and immunological components of retinal injury after alkali burn and explored a novel neuroprotective regimen suitable for prompt administration in emergency departments. Thus, in vivo pH, oxygen, and oxidation reduction measurements were performed in the anterior and posterior segment of mouse and rabbit eyes using implantable microsensors. Tissue

An alkali-burn injury model of corneal neovascularization in the mouse.

Under normal conditions, the cornea is avascular, and this transparency is essential for maintaining good visual acuity. Neovascularization (NV) of the cornea, which can be caused by trauma, keratoplasty or infectious disease, breaks down the so called 'angiogenic privilege' of the cornea and forms the basis of multiple visual pathologies that may even lead to blindness. Although there are several treatment options available, the fundamental medical need presented by corneal neovascular pathologies remains unmet. In order to develop safe, effective, and targeted therapies, a reliable model of

No more milk in milk-alkali syndrome: a case report.

This is a case of Milk-AlKali syndrome in a patient who presented with the classical triad of hypercalcemia, metabolic alkalosis and renal impairment. The source of calcium was over-the-counter calcium-containing antacid (Tums®). Milk-alkali syndrome was first recognized secondary to treatment of peptic ulcer disease with milk and absorbable alkali. Its incidence fell after the introduction of H2-blocker and proton pump inhibitor. However, it is one of the leading causes of hypercalcemia nowadays because of the wide availability, increased marketing and use of calcium carbonate especially in o

Human exposure to mercury in the vicinity of chlor-alkali plant.

The main objectives of our study were to estimate the impact of a mercury cell chlor-alkali (MCCA) complex in Rosignano Solvay (Tuscany, Italy) on the local environment and to assess mercury exposure of inhabitants living near the plant. Measurement campaigns of atmospheric Hg near the MCCA plant showed that the impact of the emitted Hg from the industry on the terrestrial environment is restricted to a close surrounding area. Total gaseous mercury concentrations in ambient air of inhabited area around the MCCA plant were in the range of 8.0-8.7 ng/m3 in summer and 2.8-4.2 ng/m3 in winter. Pea

Milk-alkali syndrome caused by ingestion of antacid tablets.

The authors report the case of a 66-year-old man suffering from a milk-alkali syndrome caused by the ingestion of large amounts of antacid tablets. The milk-alkali syndrome is a rare metabolic disorder but remains an important cause of hypercalcaemia. The symptoms of the syndrome are the triad of hypercalcaemia, metabolic alkalosis and renal insufficiency. The primary disorders are the ingestion of an excess of calcium and absorbable alkali as well as their decreased renal excretion. Fully reversible in early stages, it may lead to irreversible complications like chronic renal failure and soft
