Introduction: The vesico-allantoic cyst is a communication between the fetal bladder and the allantois through a patent urachus.Case Report: We describe a 17-week of gestational age (WGA) fetus with a 40 x 30 mm vesico-allantoic cyst. At 19 WGA, ultrasound (US) detected bilateral dilatation of renal pelvis (5-6 mm), hydroureters, and hypospadias. Amniotic fluid, umbilical cord flow, and fetal biometry were regular. Due to uncertain prognosis, the parents opted for legal termination of pregnancy. Autopsy confirmed the prenatal findings, also revealing intestinal malrotation and Meckel's diverti

After the cessation of equine embryo mobility (fixation) on mean Day 16, the embryonic vesicle is rotated or oriented so that the pole with the embryo proper is opposite to the mesometrial attachment. Orientation involves massage of the vesicle by contractions of the turgid uterine horn and greater thickening of the vesicle at the pole with the embryo proper. Thickening of the dorsal endometrium (encroachment) especially on each side of the mesometrial attachment accounts for a guitar-pick shape of the vesicle when viewed in cross section of the uterine horn. On Days 21-40, the allantoic sac e

Experimental amnio-allantoic fluid (AAF) exchange has been shown to prevent intestinal damage in the chicken embryo gastroschisis model. AAF contains both urinary and gastrointestinal waste products (UWP and GIWP). An experimental study was performed to find the waste products responsible for this intestinal damage. Gastroschisis was created in 20 chick embryos. Half were treated with AAF exchange, the other half were not treated. AAF samples were obtained for biochemical determination of urea nitrogen and creatinine as UWP, bile acids and bilirubin as GIWP at the end of the incubation. Intest

Embryonic vestiges of the umbilical cord are classic findings in routine morphologic examination of the placenta. In order to evaluate their clinicopathologic significance, we examined samples from the fetal and placental ends of 1,000 umbilical cords and collected the principal clinical findings of the corresponding newborns. Microscopic evidence of embryonic remnants were found in 231 cases (23.1%) divided into remnants of the allantoic duct (63%), the omphalomesenteric duct (6.6%), and the embryonic vessels (30.4%), including one case of hemangioma and an accessory small artery. There were

Gestational success in ruminants depends on the maintenance of a dynamic maternal-foetal microenvironment, resulting from complex interactions among the conceptus, extraembryonic membranes, maternal tissues, and gestational fluids. This study performed a comparative and longitudinal proteomic characterization of allantoic and amniotic fluids throughout pregnancy in sheep, aiming to elucidate the molecular mechanisms involved in maternal-foetal communication and embryonic development. Samples of allantoic and amniotic fluids aseptically collected from extraembryonic compartments after uterine o

Hypoxic incubation increases vascularization in the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM). The effect of regional hypoxia on the vascular density of American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) and chicken (Gallus gallus) CAMs was studied to determine if hypoxic proliferation of blood vessels is localized or global across the CAM. Eggs were incubated under normoxic conditions with a portion of the eggshell covered with non-toxic beeswax to induce external regional hypoxia. CAMs were examined under a microscope with a 'bulls eye' coverslip and a vascular density index (VDI) was determined. Th

An urachus is a remnant of allantois in embryo development constituting a connection between the dome of the bladder and umbilicus. It develops on day 16 after conception and closes during the pregnancy to form the median umbilical ligament. Patent urachus results from a failure in closing its lumen in 10-12 gestational weeks. This anomaly occurs in 1-2 babies in 100,000 births. We present the case of patent urachus. In 20 gestational weeks, a dilatation of the umbilical cord with an anechoic mass with a transverse dimension of 19 x 12 mm starting from the fetal insertion and length of 30 cm w

Embryologically, the allantois connects the urogenital sinus with the navel. Normally, the allantois is oblitered before the birth and is represented by a fibrous cord, called urachus, extending from the dome of the bladder to the navel. Urachal formation is directly related to bladder descent. Incomplete obliteration sometimes occurs. Disease rarely occurs in urachus, but adenocarcinoma is the most fearful and rare, and it represents the 0.01% of the whole adult carcinoma, the 0.17-0.34% of the whole bladder malignancy, and the 20-30% of the bladder adenocarcinoma. Yet urachus may be seat of

Urachus is a fibrous remnant from embryologic development derived from the allantois, which is involved in waste elimination in the fetus. Typically, it extends from the dome of the bladder to the umbilicus. Xanthogranulomatous urachitis, or xanthogranulomatous inflammation of the urachus, is a highly unusual pathological entity characterized by large lipid-laden macrophages, with only a few cases reported worldwide. In this case, a 48-year-old male patient presented with complaints of persistent abdominal pain and watery discharge from the umbilicus for 1 month. Following en bloc resection of

The urachus is a remnant of the allantois. Failure to obliterate can result in one of four anomalies, urachal cyst being most common. Urachal cysts are relatively rare, especially in adults. This paper presents a patient with an umbilical hernia and a ruptured urachal cyst. A 39-year-old male presented with concern for umbilical hernia, but he also noted drainage. Computed tomography scan showed a urachal cyst and umbilical hernia. The urachal cyst was excised and umbilical hernia closed primarily. The incidence of an urachal cyst is unknown, but persists in roughly 2% of adults. Diagnosis is

A urachus is a vestigial tubular structure that connects the urinary bladder to the allantois during early embryonic development. Urachal remnants are classified as patent urachus, urachal sinus, urachal cyst, and urachal diverticulum. Ten patients with urachal remnants underwent surgery at our institution between 2015 and 2019. Six patients had a urachal sinus, and four had a urachal diverticulum. Two patients with urachal sinus underwent excision of the urachal remnant, from the umbilicus to the urinary bladder, using an umbilical approach. The other four patients with urachal sinus underwen

The urachus is a vestigial remnant of the allantois, which is normally obliterated during fetal life to become the median umbilical ligament, which runs between the urinary bladder and umbilicus in adults. Failure of obliteration leaves a tubular urachal remnant, which may present with disease. We report a unique case of a urachal remnant causing umbilical pain and in-drawing on micturition in a nine-year-old boy. There was no urine discharge from the umbilicus and in-drawing did not occur on defecation. His urinary stream was normal. High frequency ultrasonography revealed a thick band with a

BACKGROUND: Urachal carcinoma is an uncommon neoplasm associated with poor prognosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old man was admitted with complaints of abdominal pain and pollakisuria. A soft mass was palpable under his navel. TC-scan revealed a 11 x 6 cm tumor, which was composed of a cystic lesion arising from the urachus and a solid mass component at the urinary bladder dome. The tumor was removed surgically. Histological examination detected poor-differentiated adenocarcinoma, which had invaded the urinary bladder. The patient has been followed up without recurrence for 6 months.

After application of sodium salicylate (1) on d 6 of incubation into the yolk sac of the embryonated hen's egg (Gallus domesticus) 3 compounds were detected in the allantois fluid (AF) dependent on embryo age. Compounds were isolated and identified (M.p., MS, TLC, HPLC) as salicylic acid (1a), o-pyrocatechuic acid (2,3-dihydroxy benzoic acid; 2) and gentisic acid (2,5-dihydroxy benzoic acid; 3), respectively. 1a, 2 and 3 are eliminated from chick embryo in both the free and the glucuronidated form. The toxicity of 1 which was inoculated on d 6 of incubation increased between d 10 and 18 of the

Several compounds were administered to pregnant Wistar-derived rats either 24 or four hours prior to the recovery of day 10 embryos for in vitro culture in Waymouth's medium and fetal calf serum. The compounds tested were 2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole (thiadiazole), cadmium sulfate, 1,2-dibromo-2,2-dichloroethyl dimethyl phosphate (dibrom), 2-(sec-Butyl)-4,6-dinitrophenol (dinoseb), led nitrate, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), sodium arsenate, and trypan blue. After 24 hours in culture, two thirds of the embryos were recovered for examination. The remaining one third were continued in culture unti

Adenomatous hyperplasia of the equine allantoic epithelium (EAAH) is an infrequently observed nodular or plaque-like change in the placenta of the mare which is presented as a case description. EAAH is most frequently diagnosed in cases of aborted fetuses and is associated with inflammatory changes of the placenta. Histologically, different degrees of EAAH may be distinguished; however, these are not associated with specific clinical signs, degree of inflammation, a particular pathogen, or the frequency of abortions. It is assumed that EAAH represents a secondary, reactive change and has per s

Hydrallantois in the mare is a very rare condition, and clinical reports help to gather information to elucidate its pathogenesis, treatment options and prognosis. Five different cases of hydrallantois in the mare are reported in this article, all with the involvement of placentitis. The five mares were presented because of acute distention of the abdomen, dyspnoea, stiff gait and a lack of appetite. After a gradual release of the excessive amount of allantoic fluid, an abortion was induced in all five mares. The foals were either born dead or euthanized. The mares recovered quickly. One mare
