Use of continuous cranial shape variation in the identification of divergent crocodile species of the genus Mecistops.

The discovery of cryptic biodiversity has blossomed under the advancements of genetic techniques, but species identification via morphology remains crucial to effective conservation efforts. In this study, we tested the use of continuous cranial shape variation in distinguishing the two living species of Mecistops: the West African slender-snouted crocodile (M. cataphractus) and the Central African slender-snouted crocodile (M. leptorhynchus). Using a combination of geometric morphometric characters and ratios of linear measurements, we identified statistically significant variation in cranial

A review of the osteoderms of lizards (Reptilia: Squamata).

Osteoderms are mineralised structures consisting mainly of calcium phosphate and collagen. They form directly within the skin, with or without physical contact with the skeleton. Osteoderms, in some form, may be primitive for tetrapods as a whole, and are found in representatives of most major living lineages including turtles, crocodilians, lizards, armadillos, and some frogs, as well as extinct taxa ranging from early tetrapods to dinosaurs. However, their distribution in time and space raises questions about their evolution and homology in individual groups. Among lizards and their relative

Does skull morphology constrain bone ornamentation? A morphometric analysis in the Crocodylia.

Previous quantitative assessments of the crocodylians' dermal bone ornamentation (this ornamentation consists of pits and ridges) has shown that bone sculpture results in a gain in area that differs between anatomical regions: it tends to be higher on the skull table than on the snout. Therefore, a comparative phylogenetic analysis within 17 adult crocodylian specimens representative of the morphological diversity of the 24 extant species has been performed, in order to test if the gain in area due to ornamentation depends on the skull morphology, i.e. shape and size. Quantitative assessment o

Differentiation and growth of bone ornamentation in vertebrates: a comparative histological study among the Crocodylomorpha.

Bone ornamentation, that is, hollow (pits and grooves) or protruding (ridges) repetitive reliefs on the surface of dermal bones, is a frequent, though poorly studied and understood, feature in vertebrates. One of the most typical examples of this characteristic is given by the Crurotarsi, a taxon formed by the crocodilians and their closest allies, which generally display deep ornamentation on skull roof and osteoderms. However, the ontogenetic process responsible for the differentiation and development of this character remains controversial. This study was conducted to settle the question on

A third case of amelia in Morelet's crocodile from the Yucatan Peninsula.

Congenital defects in crocodilians have received little interest. In the context of global change and increasing threats to biodiversity, data on birth defects occurring in wildlife could be of importance for estimating the health of species populations and their ecosystems. Herein, we report the first case of amelia (i.e. absence of limbs) in Morelet's crocodiles Crocodylus moreletii from Mexico and the third on the southern Yucatan Peninsula. The crocodile in question was a juvenile (41 cm total length) captured in July 2012 in the Río Hondo, the river that forms the border between Mexico an

Cranial shape and correlated characters in crocodilian evolution.

Crocodilians show a high degree of cranial variation and convergence throughout their 80 million-year fossil record that complicates their phylogenetic reconstruction. Conflicting phylogenetic results from different data partitions and character homoplasies typify crocodilian phylogeny, and differences between molecular and morphological phylogenetic hypotheses are believed to be associated with the slender-snout skull shape of Gavialis gangeticus and Tomistoma schlegelii. Slender-snout skulls are one of five identified eusuchian cranial ecomorph shape categories (ESCs) thought to reflect func

How crocodiles lost a forebrain circuit.

Why do brain circuits differ among species of the same or different classes of vertebrates? Answers to this question are critical in determining brain organization and evolution. Investigations in mammals and in certain model systems have been the main focus of these studies. Among the areas that have commonly been investigated are cell death, synaptic pruning, and synapse organizing proteins. Whether these same or even other factors sculpt similar circuits in other vertebrates such as reptiles is unknown. The present study examined the development of a well defined circuit in crocodiles and c

Elucidating the responses and role of the cardiovascular system in crocodilians during diving: fifty years on from the work of C.G. Wilber.

In 1960, C.G. Wilber in a laboratory-based study described for the first time the changes in heart rate with submergence in the American alligator noting in particular the marked bradycardia that occurred during forced dives. This short review summarizes the major advances in our understanding of diving and the responses and role of the cardiovascular system of crocodilians during submergence in the 50 years since Wilber published his findings. These advances are attributable in part to the technological advances made in physiological monitoring devices and wildlife telemetry that have not onl

New Perspectives in Phylogenetic Support Assessment: Using the Relative Contradiction Index to Investigate the Phylogenetic Controversies in Crocodylia.

Numerous tools have been developed since the advent of phylogenetic methods to assess tree robustness. Identifying the degree of contradiction in a phylogenetic matrix, as well as the specific contribution of each taxon and character, is essential for estimating its reliability. In parsimony-based phylogenetic inferences, classically used by paleontologists, a phylogeny results from the interaction of all the characters used in the analysis. Consequently, the support initially provided by the characters in the matrix may differ from that after optimization in the final tree, severing the link

Newly discovered crocodile mummies of variable quality from an undisturbed tomb at Qubbat al-Hawā (Aswan, Egypt).

A description is provided of the crocodile remains that were found during an excavation carried out in 2019 at Qubbat al-Hawā (Aswan, Egypt). The material consists of five more or less complete bodies and five heads that were in varying states of preservation and completeness. The absence of resin, which was apparently not used during the preparation of the mummies, and the almost complete loss of linen bandages, due to insect damage, allowed a detailed morphological and osteometric description of the remains. Attention was focused on the general state of preservation of the crocodiles, the co

Ontogenetic variability of the intertympanic sinus distinguishes lineages within Crocodylia.

The phylogenetic relationships within crown Crocodylia remain contentious due to conflicts between molecular and morphological hypotheses. However, morphology-based datasets are mostly constructed on external characters, overlooking internal structures. Here, we use 3D geometric morphometrics to study the shape of the intertympanic sinus system in crown crocodylians during ontogeny, in order to assess its significance in a taxonomic context. Intertympanic sinus shape was found to be highly correlated with size and modulated by cranial shape during development. Still, adult sinus morphology dis

A new species of Chlamydia isolated from Siamese crocodiles (Crocodylus siamensis).

Chlamydia is a known pathogen in both saltwater and freshwater crocodiles. However, the exact species/strain has not been clearly identified. In this study, we successfully cultivated Siamese crocodile Chlamydia in McCoy cells at a temperature of 30°C. Electron microscopy; phylogeny based on nine conserved taxonomically informative markers, on ompA, or on seven housekeeping genes; and whole-genome sequencing and analysis of the isolate confirmed the identity of the isolate as a new member of the genus Chlamydia, a new species that we name Chlamydia crocodili.

Development of the chondrocranium of two caiman species, Caiman latirostris and Caiman yacare.

Little is known about the embryonic development and variation of the chondrocranium in Crocodylia and there are no works on any Caiman species. Due to the importance of cranial features in the systematics of this clade, investigating the development of the skull in embryonic stages is essential. In this study, we present for the first time the development of the cartilaginous skull of two extant Caiman species. Anatomical descriptions of the embryonic chondrocranium of Caiman latirostris and Caiman yacare were made, paying special attention to their inter- and intraspecific variation. For this

The effect of dam construction on the movement of dwarf caimans, Paleosuchus trigonatus and Paleosuchus palpebrosus, in Brazilian Amazonia.

Run-of-the-river hydroelectric dams cause changes in seasonal inundation of the floodplains, and this may cause displacement of semi-aquatic vertebrates present before dam construction. This study evaluated the movement of crocodilians before and after the filling of the Santo Antônio hydroelectric reservoir on the Madeira River in the Brazilian Amazon, which occurred in November 2011. We radio-tracked four adult male Paleosuchus palpebrosus and four adult male Paleosuchus trigonatus before and after the formation of the reservoir between 2011 and 2013. The home ranges of the P. palpebrosus va

The utility of captive animals in actualistic research: A geometric morphometric exploration of the tooth row of Alligator mississippiensis suggesting ecophenotypic influences and functional constraints.

Captive broad snouted crocodylians are generally thought to have wider, shorter rostra than their wild counterparts. Interpreted to reflect morphological change in response to the conditions of captivity, this qualitative pattern could affect the utility of these animals in a variety of fields of research. However, due to relative ease of access and availability of life history data, captive animals are often utilized in actualistic research. Thus, this issue should be addressed in more detail. Here we explore snout shape variation between captive and wild members of Alligator mississippiensis
