Almitrine bismesylate simulates the effects of arterial hypoxia in producing a specific and long-lasting excitation of the peripheral arterial chemoreceptors. Previous work has shown that almitrine produces a diuresis and natriuresis when given intravenously to anaesthetised rats in a stable mannitol induced diuresis. According to a double-blind cross over design 100 mg almitrine bismesylate or placebo was administered orally to eight patients with chronic airflow obstruction having undergone bilateral carotid body resection up to two years earlier to alleviate their extreme dyspnoea. Toxoplasmosis, caused by the obligate intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii, affects about one-third of the world's population and can cause severe congenital, neurological and ocular issues. Current treatment options are limited, and there are no human vaccines available to prevent transmission. Drug repurposing has been effective in identifying anti-T. gondii drugs. In this study, the screening of the COVID Box, a compilation of 160 compounds provided by the "Medicines for Malaria Venture" organization, was conducted to explore its potential for repurposing drugs to combat toxoplasmosis.

The role of the carotid body in the ventilatory changes of exercise is reviewed. Peripheral chemoreceptor function was studied in 20 patients with chronic airways obstruction. Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan that infects up to a third of the world's population. This parasite can cause serious problems, especially if a woman is infected during pregnancy, when toxoplasmosis can cause miscarriage, or serious complications to the baby, or in an immunocompromised person, when the infection can possibly affect the patient's eyes or brain. Recent work has shown considerable advance in the potential for treatment of patients with acute exacerbations of chronic respiratory failure, and the "blue and bloated" pattern of chronic bronchitis and emphysema. New guidelines for controlled oxygen therapy have been developed, which appear to enable the dangers of hypoxaemia and respiratory acidosis in an acute exacerbation to be reduced. New drugs that improve arterial oxygenation (nitric oxide, almitrine, inhaled prostacyclin and cyclooxygenase inhibitors) are useful in the treatment of severe hypoxemia unresponsive to conventional treatment that is mainly seen in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). BACKGROUND: There are only small experiences with mechanical ventilation via nasal mask in childhood.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eleven patients using NIPPV (9 patients aged 4 to 18 years and 2 patients with cystic fibrosis aged 20 and 25 years).
RESULTS: NIPPV was effective in all 11 patients. Seven patients needed supplemental oxygen. Theophyllin, Almitrin and Salbutamol could support the nasal ventilation in special conditions.
