Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been extensively studied concerning genomic structure, infection mechanisms, and diversity of types, as well as disease progression stages and development of vaccines. HPV type prevalence can differ in specific populations in different countries, according to ethnicity. This is the first report of an integrated project to evaluate the incidence of HPV types in different regions in Brazil in order to obtain data for vaccine development. Cervical samples were collected from women seen at a public hospital in Pernambuco, Northeast Brazil, for routine evaluation of g

Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EDV) is a rare genodermatosis that predisposes affected individuals to persistent infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV), particularly those that belong to the genus beta-HPV, including HPV-5 and HPV-8, which carry high oncogenic potential. There are three main HPV-related viral cytopathic changes in cutaneous verrucae in terms of intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies (ICBs), namely, granular, filamentous, and homogeneous type ICBs. To date, only HPV-4, HPV-60, and HPV-65 have been found in association with homogeneous ICBs. We report a unique c

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection, currently affecting close to 80 million Americans. Importantly, HPV infection is recognized as the etiologic factor for numerous cancers, including cervical, vulval, vaginal, penile, anal, and a subset of oropharyngeal cancers. The prevalence of HPV infection and its associated diseases are a significant problem, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Likewise, the incidence of HPV infection poses a significant burden on individuals and the broader healthcare system. Between 2011 and 2015, there were an estimat

Based on epidemiology studies, Chlamydia trachomatis has been proposed as a co-factor for human papillomavirus (HPV) in the development of cervical cancer. These two intracellular pathogens have been independently reported to induce the production of extra centrosomes, or centrosome amplification, which is a hallmark of cancer cells. We developed a cell culture model to systematically measure the individual and combined effects of Chlamydia and HPV on the centrosome in the same host cell. We found that C. trachomatis caused centrosome amplification in a greater proportion of cells than HPV and

Genital infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HR HPV) associates with increased risk of developing precancerous lesions, such as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). The objective of this pilot study conducted in north-east Croatia was to determine the prevalence of HPV genital infection in women with abnormal cervical cytology and to determine its association with their age and HPV genotype(s). From March 2009 to December 2011, cervical swabs from 100 women were analysed for HR HPV infection (AMPLICOR HPV Test, Roche Diagnostics) and genotyped for high risk (HR), intermediate (I

Peru was one of the most affected countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, multiple other viral diseases (enteric, respiratory, bloodborne, and vector-borne) are endemic and rising. According to Peru's Ministry of Health, various health facilities in the country were reallocated for the COVID-19 pandemic, thereby leading to reduced action to curb other diseases. Many viral diseases in the area are under-reported and not recognized. The One Health approach, in addition to clinical testing, incorporates environmental surveillance for detection of infectious disease outbreaks. The purpos

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the characteristics of human papillomavirus (HPV) in oropharyngeal carcinoma (OPC), in order to provide a new theoretical basis for the prevention, treatment, and management of OPC.
METHODS: The electronic databases were searched available publications relevant to HPV infection and OPC. Studies were collected until July, 2023. The effect sizes were combined using R 4.2.2 software. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were performed to explore the sources of heterogeneity. Funnel plot and Egger's test were used to assess the publication bias.
RESULTS: Seven

Women who test positive for the human papillomavirus (HPV) but have normal cytology constitute the predominant subgroup of patients in the screening population in the post-vaccination era. The distribution of HPV genotypes changed dramatically, which was attributable to an increase in HPV vaccination coverage. These changes have created uncertainty about how to properly manage women with normal cytology, non-HPV16/18 infections, or persistent infections. Current recommendations include retesting and continued surveillance in the absence of HPV16/18 infection. However, these are not always appl

OBJECTIVE: Anal cancer is preceded by high-risk human papillomavirus (HRHPV) infection, predominantly HPV16. No HPV assay is licenced for use in anal screening. We aimed to determine the sensitivity and specificity of four anal canal swab HPV assays to predict high-grade squamous epithelial lesions (HSIL).
METHODS: In a cohort of Australian HIV-positive and negative gay and bisexual men, we compared the sensitivity and specificity of detection of 13 anal HRHPV genotypes by Linear Array (LA), Cobas 4800, EuroArray, and Anyplex II HPV28 (+ and ++ cut offs), compared their ability to predict pre

Integration of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) into the host genome is a crucial event for the development of cervical cancer, however, the underlying mechanism of HPV integration-driven carcinogenesis remains unknown. Here, we performed long-read RNA sequencing on 12 high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) and cervical cancer patients, including 3 pairs of cervical cancer and corresponding para-cancerous tissue samples to investigate the full-length landscape of cross-species genome integrations. In addition to massive unannotated isoforms, transcriptional regulatory events, a

High-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection is a necessary cause for the development of cervical cancer. Moreover, HR-HPV is also associated with cancers in the anus, vagina, vulva, penis and oropharynx. HR-HPVs target and modify the function of different cell biomolecules, such as glucose, amino acids, lipids and transcription factors (TF), such as p53, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), among others. The latter is a master TF that maintains redox homeostasis. Nrf2 also induces the transcription of genes associated with cell detoxification. Since both processes are crit

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the causative agent in the majority of anal, head and neck, oral, oropharyngeal, penile, vaginal, vulvar, and cervical cancers. Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide. Of all diagnosed human malignant neoplasms, approximately 4.5% are attributable to HPV, including cervical, anal cancers, vaginal, vulvar, penile, and oropharyngeal cancers. Over 182 HPV types have been identified and sequenced to date however, only certain types of HPV are more frequent in malignant lesions and considered to be a major risk factor in the development

Globally, human papilloma virus (HPV) infection is a common sexually transmitted disease. However, most of the HPV infections eventually resolve aided by the body's efficient cell-mediated immune responses. In the vast majority of the small group of patients who develop overt disease too, it is the immune response that culminates in regression of lesions. It is therefore a rarity that persistent infection by high-risk genotypes of HPV compounded by other risk factors progresses through precancer (various grades of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia-CIN) to cervical cancer (CxCa). Hence, althou

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between high-risk genotypes of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and cancer of different subsites of the oral cavity.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A pooled analysis of five studies included on the International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology (INHANCE) Consortium was conducted. HPV 16 and HPV 18 were considered. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) for HPV and each oral cavity subsites were simultaneously estimated using multinomial logistic regression models.
RESULTS: The analysis included 115

In line with previous case-reports, the study conducted by Hoom Choi ascertained the effectiveness of the HPV vaccine as a promising approach in the therapeutic management of ano-genital warts. The uncertain length of time and the varying effectiveness of traditional treatments encourage a reduction in the use of them and the development of a therapeutic use of HPV-vaccination. While the efficacy, safety profile and effects of the HPV vaccination in preventing ano-genital warts is well-know, therapeutic HPV vaccination has not been evaluated in a Randomized Prospective Trial, to date, and has
