Altruistic learning.

The origin of altruism remains one of the most enduring puzzles of human behaviour. Indeed, true altruism is often thought either not to exist, or to arise merely as a miscalculation of otherwise selfish behaviour. In this paper, we argue that altruism emerges directly from the way in which distinct human decision-making systems learn about rewards. Using insights provided by neurobiological accounts of human decision-making, we suggest that reinforcement learning in game-theoretic social interactions (habitisation over either individuals or games) and observational learning (either imitative

Augmentation of frontoparietal gamma-band phase coupling enhances human altruistic behavior.

Cooperation, productivity, and cohesion in human societies depend on altruism, the tendency to share resources with others even though this is costly. While altruism is a widely shared social norm, people vary strongly in their inclination to behave altruistically, in particular across situations with different types of inequality in resource distribution. What neurobiological factors underlie this variability? And can these be targeted by interventions to enhance altruistic behavior? Here, we build on electroencephalography (EEG) evidence that altruistic choices during disadvantageous inequal

Close relationship partners of impartial altruists do not report diminished relationship quality and are similarly altruistic.

Impartial altruism is often considered a moral ideal but is rare in practice. Instead, generosity typically decreases as social distance increases, a phenomenon termed social discounting. Most people prefer this partiality in their close relationships and view impartial altruists as poorer relationship partners. This suggests real-world impartial altruism may be rare because it reduces-or is perceived to reduce-the quality of close relationships. To investigate this, we compared patterns of generosity and social relationship quality in a rare sample of individuals who had engaged in extraordin

Roots and Benefits of Costly Giving: Children Who Are More Altruistic Have Greater Autonomic Flexibility and Less Family Wealth.

Altruism, although costly, may promote well-being for people who give. Costly giving by adults has received considerable attention, but less is known about the possible benefits, as well as biological and environmental correlates, of altruism in early childhood. In the current study, we present evidence that children who forgo self-gain to help other people show greater vagal flexibility and higher subsequent vagal tone than children who do not, and children from less wealthy families behave more altruistically than those from wealthier families. These results suggest that (a) altruism should

An Evaluation of Messages to Promote Parental Intent to Vaccinate Children Aged <12 Years Against COVID-19.

OBJECTIVES: Effective health communication can increase intent to vaccinate. We compared 8 messages that may influence parents' intent to vaccinate their children against COVID-19. METHODS: In a cross-sectional survey of adults in the United States administered online in August 2021, 1837 parents and legal guardians were exposed to 8 messages (individual choice, gain/practical benefits, nonexpert, health care provider recommendation, altruism/community good, safety/effectiveness, safety, and effectiveness) to determine message reception and influence on intent to vaccinate their children. Effects of sensation seeking, instruction set, and alcohol/placebo administration on aggressive behavior.

Sixty-three male college students were assessed on the number of aversive sound blasts they administered in response to their fictitious task partner's blasts in a variation of the Taylor aggression paradigm. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of three alcohol dosing conditions (placebo, placebo/expect alcohol, and alcohol) and one of three instruction conditions (aggression-told the noise blasts were meant to disrupt task performance; altruism-told the noise blasts were meant to improve concentration; ambiguous-either aggression or altruism). A significant three-way interaction of dosing

Inter-Group Conflict and Cooperation: Field Experiments Before, During and After Sectarian Riots in Northern Ireland.

The idea that cooperative groups out-compete less cooperative groups has been proposed as a theoretical possibility for the evolution of cooperation through cultural group selection. Previous studies have found an association between increased cooperation and exposure to inter-group violence, but most have not been able to identify the specific target of cooperation and are based on correlational data making it difficult to establish causality. In this study we test the hypothesis that inter-group conflict promotes parochial altruism (i.e., in-group altruism and out-group hostility) by using l

Selfish parents, altruistic children and helpers' infertility.

While Hamilton's rule has traditionally attributed non-reproductive phenotypes to kin selection and altruistic behavior, we argue that infertile offspring can emerge through selfish parental resource allocation strategies without necessitating offspring altruism. By developing a model incorporating reproductive budget constraints, per-offspring investment costs, and fertility parameters, we derive the conditions under which producing infertile helpers optimizes parental fitness. The model predicts infertile phenotypes become evolutionarily advantageous when total offspring number exceeds a thr

Social distancing as a public good under the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to show that social distancing is a public good under the COVID-19 pandemic. STUDY DESIGN: We apply economic theory to analyse a cross-sectional survey. METHODS: Economic theory is complemented with empirical evidence. An online survey of those aged 30-49 years in Japan (n = 2177) was conducted between April 28 and May 7. Respondents were selected by quota sampling with regard to age group, gender and prefecture of residence. Our main figure shows the proportion of people who increased/did not change/decreased social distancing, relative to the level

Altruistic discourse in the informed consent process for childhood cancer clinical trials.

Scholars have debated the role that altruistic considerations play--and should play--in recruitment and decision-making processes for clinical trials. Little empirical data are available to support their various perspectives. We analyzed 140 audiotaped pediatric informed consent sessions, of which 95 (68%) included at least one discussion of how participation in a cancer clinical trial might benefit: 1) the pursuit of scientific knowledge generally; 2) other children with cancer specifically; and 3) "the future" and other vaguely defined recipients. Clinicians initiated most (80%) of these dis

Economic Preferences Predict COVID-19 Vaccination Intentions and Behavior.

This study investigates the relationship between economic preferences and COVID-19 vaccination readiness using two representative samples of the German population (N > 5000). We elicited altruism, patience, risk-taking and trust using validated survey questions. We find robust, positive relationships between vaccination readiness and both patience and trust. The positive association between altruism and vaccination readiness vanishes when controlling for the other preference dimensions. No consistent effect emerges for risk-taking. Our results underscore the importance of accounting for the in

The Impact of the COVID-19 Surge Response on Motivation Among Anesthesiology Residents and Fellows: A discussion of findings from semi-structured interviews at Montefiore Medical Center and educational takeaways.

BACKGROUND: The American Board of Medical Specialties definition of medical professionalism cites the need to acquire, maintain, and advance a value system serving the patients' and public's interests above self-interests.4 Medical professionalism is a one of the core physician competencies assessed by both the ACGME training program evaluation and the ABA certification process. However, a growing concern for the decline of professionalism and altruism in medicine resulted in increased publications on the matter, citing various potential sources for the issue. [Psychological structure of personality and motivation in blood donors].

The study comprised 500 persons who donated blood for five and more times. The psychic personality structure was studied by EMOTIONS PROFILE INDEX tests with the forced-choice personality index (4) by Henry Kellerman and Robert Plutchnik. Blood donor motivation was examined by the standardized questionnaires which was interpreted by the so-called keys of desirable responses, separately for every potentially primary motive (altruism; habits; superiority complex; inferiority complex; selfpunishment; benefit; indefinite motive). The aim of the study was to assess whether the psychic structure of

Differences in social representation of blood donation between donors and non-donors: an empirical study.

BACKGROUND: Both donors and non-donors have a positive image of blood donation, so donors and non-donors do not differ regarding their views on donation but do differ in converting their opinion into an active deed of donation. Several studies have identified altruism and empathy as the main factors underlying blood donation. However, a mixture of various motivational factors mould the complex behaviour of donation. This paper presents an exploratory study on differences of social representations of blood donation between blood donors and non-donors, in order to understand the reasons that bri

The cultural contagion of conflict.

Anecdotal evidence abounds that conflicts between two individuals can spread across networks to involve a multitude of others. We advance a cultural transmission model of intergroup conflict where conflict contagion is seen as a consequence of universal human traits (ingroup preference, outgroup hostility; i.e. parochial altruism) which give their strongest expression in particular cultural contexts. Qualitative interviews conducted in the Middle East, USA and Canada suggest that parochial altruism processes vary across cultural groups and are most likely to occur in collectivistic cultural co

Motives and deterrents of blood donation: perspectives from the post-COVID era in Northern Iran.

BACKGROUND: Blood donation is essential to healthcare systems, yet shortages persist, highlighting the need to understand factors influencing donation behavior. Motivations and deterrents, shaped by societal changes like the COVID-19 pandemic, significantly impact donation. This study explores the motives and deterrents of blood donation among Iranian donors in the post-COVID era, while also examining how the pandemic has affected donor attitudes, including their willingness to donate. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted at Anzali Blood Donation Center, Iran, from December 2023 to Janu

Dying the right-way? Interest in and perceived persuasiveness of parochial extremist propaganda increases after mortality salience.

Research on parochial altruism demonstrated that hostility toward out-groups (parochialism) represents the dark side of the willingness to benefit one's in-group even at own costs (altruism). Parochial aggression thereby emerged mainly under conditions of threat. Extremist propaganda videos, for instance by right-wing extremists, try to capitalize on parochial altruistic mechanism by telling recipients sharing their national identity that this nation is under threat wherefore they for have to join the extremist's cause to prevent the extinction of their nation. Most of the time, propaganda vid

Impact of the human egalitarian syndrome on darwinian selection mechanics.

With nothing more than kin selection and reciprocal altruism theories to work with, the selection basis of human degrees of altruism and cooperation is often difficult to explain. However, during our prehistoric foraging phase, a highly stable egalitarian syndrome arose that had profound effects on Darwinian selection mechanics. The band's insistence on egalitarianism seriously damped male status rivalry and thereby reduced the intensity of selection within the group by reducing phenotypic variation at that level, while powerful social pressure to make decisions consensual at the band level ha

Modulating the activity of right temporo-parietal junction by anodal tDCS enhances the agent's repayment in hold-up game.

Hold-up problem is very common in non-contractible relation-specific investment transactions. And this problem can affect by trust, cooperation and altruism behavior of human beings. Recent neuroscience researches had explored a network of right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ) involved in human cooperation and altruism behavior. The purpose of this study is to modulate the activation of rTPJ through transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and to study the influence of rTPJ on investment and offer behavior in hold-up game. Moral Inequity in Organ Donation: An Examination of Age-Based Denial.

The decision to donate an organ is often the decision to save a loved one's life. Frequently recognized as an ultimate act of altruism, a person's choice to donate is embedded in their right to make decisions about their own body and well-being, free of coercion. To ensure donors are truly acting out of altruism, transplant professionals will not allow someone to donate if there are concerns of duress or inability to consent. Although the evaluation of potential donors is well-intentioned and necessary, stigma and assumptions about young adults can sometimes lead to their being denied the oppo
