The plant Halimione portulacoides, an abundant species widely distributed in temperate salt-marshes, has been previously assessed as bioindicator and biomonitor of mercury contamination in these ecosystems. The present study aims to assess uptake and distribution of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MMHg) within H. portulacoides, potential mercury release by volatilization through leaves, and toxicity and tolerance mechanisms by investigating plant photochemical responses. Stem cuttings of H. portulacoides were collected from a salt-marsh within the Tagus estuary natural protected area, a

We examined the effects of copper and lead on the antioxidant enzyme response of Alternanthera philoxeroides and Nasturtium officinale using a benchtop luminometer. Alternanthera philoxeroides is a nonnative invasive plant species that has spread throughout the wetland ecosystem in the southern part of the USA. Its invasion is facilitated by its ability to thrive in a wide range of abiotic conditions. Nasturtium officinale is an aquatic plant that is sensitive to relatively low amounts of pollution and is most commonly found in springs and shallow bodies of water. While A. philoxeroides tolera

Understanding seasonal dietary shifts in reintroduced herbivores is essential for conservation, yet detailed patterns for Milu (Elaphurus davidianus) in wetland habitats remain underexplored. This study applied high-throughput sequencing to fecal samples collected across four seasons in Tianjin Qilihai Wetland, identifying 43 plant species from 24 families. Significant seasonal differences were detected in relative read abundance. At the family level, Poaceae dominated spring, significantly exceeding all other seasons; Asteraceae and Cyperaceae were highest in summer, with Cyperaceae also surp

The Aerva plants are exceptionally rich in phytochemicals and possess therapeutics potential. Phytochemical screening shows that Aerva persica (Burm.f.) Merr. contains highest contents i.e., total phenolics, flavonoids, flavonols, tannins, alkaloids, carbohydrates, anthraquinones and glycosides. In-vitro antibacterial and enzymatic (carbonic anhydrase) inhibition studies on methanol extracts of A. persica indicated the presence of biological active constituents within chloroform soluble portions. Investigation in the pure constituents on the chloroform portions of A. persica accomplished by co

In the present paper, for the first time, we are interested to separate and identify some bioactive fractions isolated from the roots of a Saharan plant Anabasis articulata, which is widely used in traditional medicine against cancer. The crude methanolic extract of the roots was fractionated on column chromatography, and eluted with dichloromethane/methanol each time with increasing polarity of methanol; 17 fractions were separated. One of these fractions named F12 showed more antioxidant activity to scavenge DPPH free radical with percentage inhibition of 95.29%. F12 was separated by thin-la

NAR2 family proteins are involved in the uptake of nitrate by plant roots as partners of high-affinity nitrate transporters of NRT2 family. In this study, we cloned the coding sequence of a gene, which encodes a protein consisting of 196 amino acids with a calculated molecular weight of 21.7 kDa, from the euhalophyte Suaeda altissima. The protein was characterized in terms of structure and phylogeny. On the phylogenetic tree of NAR2 family proteins, the protein from S. altissima is located in a clade with proteins from the NAR2.2 subfamily found in species within the Amaranthaceae. Therefore,

Constructed wetlands use vegetation and microorganisms to remove contaminants like nitrogen and phosphorus from water. For mariculture, the impact of salinity on the efficiency of wastewater treatment of wetlands is unneglectable. However, little is known about their impact on the microbiome in constructed wetlands. Here, we set four salinity levels (15, 22, 29, and 36) in Salicornia constructed wetlands, and the experiment was conducted for a period of 72 days. The 15 group exhibited the highest removal rates of nitrogen compounds and phosphate, compared to the other salinity groups, the nosZ

Alligator weed is reported to have a strong ability to adapt to potassium deficiency stress. Proteomic changes in response to this stress are largely unknown in alligator weed seedlings. In this study, we performed physiological and comparative proteomics of alligator weed seedlings between normal growth (CK) and potassium deficiency (LK) stress using 2-DE techniques, including root, stem and leaf tissues. Seedling height, soluble sugar content, PGK activity and H2O2 contents were significantly altered after 15 d of LK treatment. A total of 206 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were ide

The present work investigates the adsorption of As(V) onto the dried powder of alligator weed root as bio-sorbent, using acid pre-treated alligator weed root powder as the reference. The isotherm study suggested there is a favorable As(V) adsorption happened on the AWR surface. The batch adsorption experimental results indicated that the ionic strength has little impact on the adsorption, while the solution pH has a significant effect on the adsorption with apparent inhibition appearing in both extreme acidic and alkaline pH region. In addition, the properties of the biosorbent were characteri

The present study undertook chemical analysis of components of Pfaffia paniculata roots. In addition, an animal experiment was conducted in which mice had ad libitum access to water enriched with powdered P. paniculata root for 30 days. Changes in plasma concentrations of estradiol-17beta and progesterone in female mice and of testosterone in male mice were ascertained. The results revealed that P. paniculata roots contain two types of phytosteroids, beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol, in addition to other compounds such as pfaffic acid, allantoin, saponins, beta-sitosteryl-beta-D-glucoside, and

Biological invasions contribute to global biodiversity change, yet Kazakhstan's alien vascular flora remains insufficiently documented. We provide the first comprehensive verified inventory of alien vascular plants in Kazakhstan, synthesizing literature, herbarium collections, field observations, and iNaturalist and Plantarium records. The alien flora comprises 263 taxa in 181 genera and 54 families: 141 taxa (53.6%) are naturalized, 120 are casual, and two have unresolved establishment status. Neophytes predominate (218 taxa: 104 naturalized, 112 casual, two unresolved), whereas archaeophytes
