Exploring the influence of deforestation on dengue fever incidence in the Brazilian Amazonas state.

INTRODUCTION: Dengue fever is the most prevalent arboviral disease in the Brazilian Amazon and places a major health, social and economic burden on the region. Its association with deforestation is largely unknown, yet the clearing of tropical rainforests has been linked to the emergence of several infectious diseases, including yellow fever and malaria. This study aimed to explore potential drivers of dengue emergence in the Brazilian Amazon with a focus on deforestation. METHODS: An ecological study design using municipality-level secondary data from the Amazonas state between 2007 and 2017

The human platelet alloantigen profile in blood donors from Amazonas, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Human platelet antigens (HPAs) are alloantigens derived from polymorphisms in platelet-surface glycoproteins. The occurrence of alloantibodies against HPAs can lead to platelet destruction and subsequent thrombocytopenia. Brazilians have a high rate of racial admixture, and the knowledge of HPA polymorphisms in particular donors from north Brazil, who have a large Amerindian influence, is a relevant strategy to prevent alloimmunisation. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was investigate the HPA allele's frequencies in the Amazonas blood donors. METHODS: We performed HPA genotyping among 200 Amaz

The effect of premedication with ketamine, alone or with diazepam, on anaesthesia with sevoflurane in parrots (Amazona aestiva).

BACKGROUND: Premedication is rarely used in avian species. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of premedication on the quality of sevoflurane induction and anaesthesia in parrots. We hypothesised that premedication would facilitate handling and decrease the minimum anaesthetic dose (MAD). Thirty-six adult parrots were randomly distributed in three groups: group S (n = 12) was premedicated with NaCl 0.9%; group KS (n = 12) was premedicated with 10 mg.kg-1 ketamine; and group KDS (n = 12) was premedicated with 10 mg.kg-1 ketamine and 0.5 mg.kg-1 diazepam, delivered intramuscularly.

Evaluation of Aedes aegypti control intervention with pyriproxyfen by lcWGS in Manacapuru, Amazonas, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Ae. aegypti mosquitoes are considered a global threat to public health due to its ability to transmit arboviruses such as yellow fever, dengue, Zika and Chikungunya to humans. The lack of effective arboviral vaccines and etiological treatments make vector control strategies fundamental in interrupting the transmission cycle of these pathogens. This study evaluated Ae. aegypti mosquito populations pre- and post-intervention period with disseminating stations of the larvicide pyriproxyfen to understand its potential influence on the genetic structure and population diversity of these
