Perioperative adverse events in patients with obstructive sleep apnea undergoing ambulatory ENT surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may be at increased risk for adverse events during ambulatory otorhinolaryngologic (ear, nose, and throat, [ENT]) surgery. There remains a gap in the literature quantifying these risks. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the incidence of perioperative complications among patients with OSA undergoing ambulatory ENT surgeries. METHODS: We systematically searched five databases from inception until February 2024 for studies on adult OSA patients undergoing ambulatory ENT surgeries. Primary outcomes included rates of c

Pain Management for In-Office Uterine and Cervical Procedures: ACOG Clinical Consensus No. 9.

In-office gynecologic procedures, such as intrauterine device insertion, endometrial biopsy, hysteroscopy, intrauterine imaging, and cervical biopsy, among others, are common procedures experienced by many patients. There is an urgent need for health care professionals to have a better understanding of pain-management options and to not underestimate the pain experienced by patients and for patients to have more autonomy over pain-control options during in-office procedures. The way pain is understood and managed by health care professionals is also affected by systemic racism and bias of how

Patients' experiences of day surgery and recovery: A meta-ethnography.

AIM: To explore and synthesise findings from qualitative studies on adult patients' experiences of day surgery and the processes of recovery. BACKGROUND: There has been a shift in the practice of elective surgery, from inpatient to ambulatory treatment. Accordingly, more patients are undergoing day surgery and expected to care for themselves at home. To our knowledge, an updated metasynthesis on patients' experiences of day surgery across diverse contexts and continents is lacking. DESIGN: Meta-ethnography. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL were systematically searched for qualitative res

Outpatient partial parotidectomies are feasible in a well-selected population: a French experience.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and patient satisfaction of outpatient partial parotidectomies in a French university hospital, addressing the lack of national data on such procedures amidst a push for increased ambulatory surgeries. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted, involving patients undergoing partial parotidectomy for non-malignant tumors from March 2021 to May 2023. Inclusion was based on surgical, medical, and social criteria. A control group was also reviewed for comparison. The study followed a standardized surgical and anesthesia protoc

Outpatient vs Inpatient Robotic Partial Nephrectomy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Outpatient pathways are increasingly implemented, including robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN). However, the evidence supporting same-day RAPN originates from heterogeneous center series. As such, we synthesized the evidence in this systematic review and meta-analysis, comparing operative outcomes between outpatient and inpatient RAPN. METHODS: We adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 and AMSTAR guidelines. Three electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) were searched from their inception until June 18, 2025

Incidence of carpal tunnel release: trends and implications within the United States ambulatory care setting.

PURPOSE: To investigate the changes, trends, and implications of carpal tunnel release (CTR) surgery within an ambulatory setting over the past decade in the United States. METHODS: We undertook an analysis of ambulatory surgery center CTR cases using data from the National Survey of Ambulatory Surgery. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention carried out this survey in 1996, and again in 2006. We searched the cases with the procedure codes indicative of CTR. RESULTS: The number of CTR procedures increased by 38% (from 360,000 to 577,000) between 1996 and 2006. In 1996, 16% of all ambu

A comprehensive approach to fast tracking in cardiac surgery: ambulatory low-risk open-heart surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Ambulatory surgery, where the processes of admission, surgery and discharge are completed within 24h, is an increasingly important part of many surgical specialties. The aim of this study was to evaluate suitability of ambulatory approach for low-risk open-heart procedures. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 48 patients who had undergone atrial septal defect (ASD) closure at our centre (from October 2005 through November 2006) suggested that this open-heart procedure was optimally suited for treatment with ambulatory approach. Based on this, 15 patients with ostium secundum ASD u

Single-anastomosis duodenal ileostomy with sleeve is a safe and effective option for patients in an ambulatory surgical center.

BACKGROUND: The single-anastomosis duodenal ileostomy with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S) is gaining popularity in the United States as an alternative to the gastric bypass for patients with a high body mass index (BMI) or who are less likely to succeed with a sleeve. While SADI-S has similar weight loss to the gastric bypass, the complication rate is significantly lower, allowing surgeons to perform SADI-S in an ambulatory surgical center with a 23-hour stay. OBJECTIVES: To determine if SADI-S can be safely performed in an ambulatory surgical setting. SETTING: Private practice. METHODS: All S

Use of ambulatory pathways in emergency general surgery: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Ambulatory care is defined as the provision of medical treatment by healthcare professionals outside an inpatient hospital setting. While well-established in acute medicine, uptake of ambulatory pathways in emergency general surgery (EGS) is variable and optimal design and delivery is unclear in this context. This systematic review sought to (1) appraise current EGS ambulatory pathway literature and (2) ascertain the constituent components across the identified pathways, guiding the development of comprehensive templates for future EGS ambulatory pathways. DESIGN: Systematic revie

[What is the care path for a patient in ambulatory surgery?].

The inmate is a special patient. Indeed, his status requires a specific organization. The Versailles hospital centre (78) is the reference centre for the Yvelines prison and the women's prison. The majority of interventions for detained patients are performed on an outpatient basis.

Effect of physician ownership of specialty hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers on frequency of use of outpatient orthopedic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Physician-owned specialty hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers have become commonplace in many markets throughout the United States. Little is known about whether the financial incentives linked to ownership affect frequency of outpatient surgery. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate if financial incentives linked to physician ownership influence frequency of outpatient orthopedic surgical procedures. DESIGN AND SETTING: We analyzed 5 years of claims data from a large private insurer in Idaho to compare frequency by orthopedic surgeon owners and nonowners of surgical procedures that could

The effect of ambulatory status on outcomes of percutaneous vascular interventions and lower extremity bypass for critical limb ischemia in the Vascular Quality Initiative.

OBJECTIVE: Ambulatory status has been shown to be an important predictor of postoperative morbidity and mortality for a variety of surgical procedures. We sought to assess contemporary practice patterns in treating critical limb ischemia (CLI) and outcomes based on ambulatory status. METHODS: The Vascular Quality Initiative (2010-2015) was queried for patients undergoing percutaneous vascular interventions (PVIs) or lower extremity bypass (LEB) for CLI. Ambulatory status was classified as ambulatory, ambulatory with assistance, and nonambulatory (composite of wheelchair bound and bedridden).

Adjunctive procedures in surgery of the aging face.

Acceptance of surgical treatment for rejuvenation of the aging face has increased over the past two decades. Face lift (or rhytidectomy) and blepharoplasty remain the basic procedures used in this surgery. Adjunctive procedures such as forehead lift, lipo-suction, chemical peel, chin augmentation, cheek augmentation, collagen injections, hair transplant and permanent eyeliner have been developed to enhance the results of surgery for rejuvenation of the aging face. All of this surgery can be, and usually is, accomplished using local anesthesia with intravenous sedation in an ambulatory surgical

Opioid prescribing to preteen children undergoing ambulatory surgery in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Overuse and misuse of opioids is a continuing crisis. The most common reason for children to receive opioids is postoperative pain, and they are often prescribed more than needed. The amount of opioids prescribed varies widely, even for minor ambulatory procedures. This study uses a large national sample to describe filled opioid prescriptions to preteen patients after all ambulatory surgical procedures and common standard procedures. METHODS: We analyzed Truven Health MarketScan data for July 2012 through December 2016 to perform descriptive analyses of opioid fills by age and ge

Safety and Outcome Measures of Ankle Open Reduction and Internal Fixation in an Ambulatory Surgical Center.

The transition of traditionally hospital-based orthopedic procedures to the ambulatory surgery center setting provides many benefits from a patient care and financial perspective. Specifically, closed ankle fractures can potentially be managed at such centers without needing hospitalization. Adding to the paucity of data, this study describes the safety, cost, and outcomes of patients undergoing ankle fracture repair in an ambulatory surgery center. A retrospective chart review of 100 patients who underwent ankle fracture open reduction and internal fixation from a single ambulatory surgery ce
