Productivity of natural and artificial containers for Aedes polynesiensis and Aedes aegypti in four American Samoan villages.

Six mosquito species were identified in a survey of containers associated with 347 households in four villages in American Samoa. Aedes polynesiensis Marks (Diptera: Culicidae) and Aedes aegypti (L) were the most abundant species, representing 57% and 29% of the mosquitoes identified. Culex quinquefasciatus (Say), Culex annulirostris (Skuse), Aedes oceanicus (Belkin) and Toxorhynchites amboinensis (Doleschall) were also found. Aedes aegypti and Ae. polynesiensis showed distinct differences in their use of containers, preferring large and small containers, respectively. By contrast with previou

The Dementia Literacy Assessment (DeLA): A novel measure of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders health literacy in diverse populations.

INTRODUCTION: Low health literacy about Alzheimer's disease and related disorders (ADRD) may limit help-seeking, early detection, and enrollment in clinical trials, particularly in minoritized communities. We created the Dementia Literacy Assessment (DeLA) to improve ADRD health literacy. METHODS: The DeLA, a storytelling method that included culturally adaptable vignettes embedded with important factoids about ADRD, was administered to 213 participants from urban and rural regions of Palm Beach and Broward County in Florida and 193 participants in American Samoa. RESULTS: The DeLA increased

Intergenerational impact of maternal trauma on adolescent depression: The role of parenting factors in Samoan mother-daughter dyads.

Prior research has found links between maternal trauma and adolescent depression symptoms via maternal depression symptoms and parenting practices; however, these relationships have not been explored in American Samoa - a critical oversight given the centrality of family in this context and a high prevalence of adolescent mental health problems. This exploratory retrospective cohort study aimed to fill this gap. We assessed maternal trauma, maternal and child depressive symptoms, and parenting practices among 98 mother-adolescent daughter (13-18 years) dyads using multivariable linear regressi

Gestational diabetes-Risk factors and outcomes among American Samoan Women (GROW): A longitudinal cohort study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is linked with adverse health outcomes for both mother and infant and increases the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and long-term metabolic dysfunction postpartum. American Samoa experiences among the highest prevalence of GDM globally, with estimates suggesting 26-42% of women develop the condition. To date, no studies have attempted to understand the underlying etiology of GDM in Pacific Islanders or examine population-specific progression from GDM to T2DM. The GROW study will characterize glucose homeostasis, diabetes progression, and

Laboratory Comparison of Rapid Antigen Diagnostic Tests for Lymphatic Filariasis: STANDARD Q Filariasis Antigen Test (QFAT) Versus Bioline Filariasis Test Strip (FTS).

Accurate rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) are needed to diagnose lymphatic filariasis (LF) in global elimination programmes. We evaluated the performance of the new STANDARD Q Filariasis Antigen Test (QFAT) against the Bioline Filariasis Test Strip (FTS) for detecting W. bancrofti antigen (Ag) in laboratory conditions, using serum (n = 195) and plasma (n = 189) from LF-endemic areas (Samoa, American Samoa and Myanmar) and Australian negative controls (n = 46). The prior Ag status of endemic samples (54.9% Ag-positive) was determined by rapid test (ICT or FTS) or Og4C3 ELISA. The proportion of sam

The Utility of Infectious Disease Prevalence Studies to Inform Public Health Decision-Making in the Samoan Islands: A Systematic Review.

We conducted a systematic review of infectious disease (ID) prevalence studies in the Samoan Islands from 2000 to 2024 and aimed to synthesise the prevalence of IDs, the purpose of the studies, and the potential utility of survey results for informing public health decision-making. We searched five academic databases, the Western Pacific Region Index Medicus, and grey literature up until April 2024. English language publications of ID surveys in American Samoa and Samoa were included. Each study's aim, design, and prevalence results were extracted and categorised by disease and data sources. W

Scabies and Bacterial Superinfection among American Samoan Children, 2011-2012.

BACKGROUND: Scabies, a highly pruritic and contagious mite infestation of the skin, is endemic among tropical regions and causes a substantial proportion of skin disease among lower-income countries. Delayed treatment can lead to bacterial superinfection, and treatment of close contacts is necessary to prevent reinfestation. We describe scabies incidence and superinfection among children in American Samoa (AS) to support scabies control recommendations. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We reviewed 2011-2012 pharmacy records from the only AS pharmacy to identify children aged ≤14 years with fil

A Samoan case of chromoblastomycosis caused by Cladophialophora ajelloi.

A case of chromoblastomycosis from American Samoa was studied. Histopathological examination of the biopsy material from the lesion revealed the presence of thick-walled, dematiaceous, muriform cells characteristic of chromoblastomycosis. Detailed mycological study of the dematiaceous mould isolated from the biopsy material disclosed that the fungus not only produced long, branched chains of holoblastic conidia similar to those of Cladosporium carrionii, but that many of the terminal and intercalary catenulate, holoblastic conidia had been converted into flask-shaped phialides with flaring col

Use of Large Language Models to Assess the Likelihood of Epidemics From the Content of Tweets: Infodemiology Study.

BACKGROUND: Previous work suggests that Google searches could be useful in identifying conjunctivitis epidemics. Content-based assessment of social media content may provide additional value in serving as early indicators of conjunctivitis and other systemic infectious diseases. OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether large language models, specifically GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 (OpenAI), can provide probabilistic assessments of whether social media posts about conjunctivitis could indicate a regional outbreak. METHODS: A total of 12,194 conjunctivitis-related tweets were obtained using a targeted Boolea

First assessment of menstrual cycle function and reproductive endocrine status in Samoan women.

BACKGROUND: American Samoa and Samoa are now characterized by one of the world's highest levels of adult overweight and obesity. Our objective was to investigate patterns of menstrual cyclicity reported by Samoan women and examine the relationship to adiposity and select hormone levels. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was performed among Samoan women, aged 18-39 years (n = 322), using anthropometric and biomarker measures of adiposity and reproductive health, including insulin, adiponectin, testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin, free androgen index (FAI) and mullerian-inhibiting subs

A case of severe septicemia following traditional Samoan tattooing.

Traditional Samoan tattoos, or tatau, are created by master tattooists, or tufuga ta tatau, and their assistants using multi-pointed handmade tools. These tools are used to tap tattoo pigment into the skin, usually over several days. This traditional process is considered an honor to the one receiving the tatau. Unfortunately, as it is typically practiced according to cultural traditions, the sanitary practices are less than ideal. There have been several reported cases of severe infection, sepsis, shock, and even death as a result of traditional Samoan tattoos. Although Hawai'i is the home of

International foodborne outbreak of Shigella sonnei infection in airline passengers.

During 22-24 August 2004, an outbreak of Shigella sonnei infection affected air travellers who departed from Hawaii. Forty-seven passengers with culture-confirmed shigellosis and 116 probable cases who travelled on 12 flights dispersed to Japan, Australia, 22 US states, and American Samoa. All flights were served by one caterer. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of all 29 S. sonnei isolates yielded patterns that matched within one band. Food histories and menu reviews identified raw carrot served onboard as the likely vehicle of infection. Attack rates for diarrhoea on three surveyed flights wi

Zika Virus Infection Among U.S. Pregnant Travelers - August 2015-February 2016.

After reports of microcephaly and other adverse pregnancy outcomes in infants of mothers infected with Zika virus during pregnancy, CDC issued a travel alert on January 15, 2016, advising pregnant women to consider postponing travel to areas with active transmission of Zika virus. On January 19, CDC released interim guidelines for U.S. health care providers caring for pregnant women with travel to an affected area, and an update was released on February 5. As of February 17, CDC had received reports of nine pregnant travelers with laboratory-confirmed Zika virus disease; 10 additional reports

Combating vaccine hesitancy and other 21st century social determinants in the global fight against measles.

The year 2019 marked the return of measles after almost two decades of unprecedented successes in global vaccination programs. Measles transmission due to sharp declines in measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination coverage is now widespread among nations that previously saw impressive public health gains including Philippines, DR Congo, Madagascar, Samoa, many in Europe, and the United States and Venezuela in the Americas. Key determinants include the interruption of vaccine health systems due to war, conflict, and political instability; food insecurity and urbanization; and an increasingly glo

Causes of mortality in green turtles from Hawaii and the insular Pacific exclusive of fibropapillomatosis.

Fibropapillomatosis (FP) comprises a majority of green turtle stranding in Hawaii; however, green turtles in the Pacific are also susceptible to non-FP related causes of death. We present here necropsy findings from 230 free-ranging green turtles originating from Hawaii, the Mariana archipelago, Palmyra Atoll, American Samoa, and Johnston Atoll that died from non-FP related causes. Most turtles died from fishing-induced or boat strike trauma followed by infectious/inflammatory diseases, nutritional problems (mainly cachexia), and an array of physiologic problems. Infectious/inflammatory proble

The effects of variable spatial aggregation on lymphatic filariasis transmission.

BACKGROUND: Elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a World Health Organization goal, with several countries at or near prevalence thresholds. Where LF cases remain after mass drug administration, they tend to be spatially clustered, with an overdispersed individual worm burden. Both individual and spatial heterogeneities can cause aggregation of infection; however, few studies have investigated the drivers of heterogeneity and implications for disease elimination. METHODS: We used a spatially explicit lymphatic filariasis model to investigate LF transmission in American Samoa at three sp
