Fluctuating asymmetry, parasitism and reproductive fitness in two species of gammarid crustacean.

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA), defined as random deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry, is assumed to reflect developmental instability. FA is predicted to increase in response to environmental stress, including parasite infection. In addition, based on theory we predict a higher FA in sexually selected traits, due to their greater sensitivity to stress. We investigated the relationships between FA, parasitism and reproductive fitness in 2 species of gammarid crustacean, incorporating both sexual and non-sexual traits. We tested the hypothesis that gammarids infected by vertically transmitte

Impacts of ionising radiation on sperm quality, DNA integrity and post-fertilisation development in marine and freshwater crustaceans.

Crustaceans have been designated as internationally important model organisms in the development of environmental radioprotection measures. Despite the known sensitivity of sperm to ionizing radiation, the impacts of chronic radiation exposure on male fertility in crustaceans have not been studied. For the first time, the present study aimed to assess the impacts of chronic radiation exposure on male fertility, sperm DNA damage and concomitant impacts on breeding in two amphipod crustaceans. Echinogammarus marinus and Gammarus pulex (male fertility only) were exposed to phosphorus-32 at dose r

Re-analysis of narcotic critical body residue data using the equilibrium distribution concept and refined partition coefficients.

Narcosis occurs as a result of the accumulation of chemicals in the phospholipid membrane. The toxic threshold concentration in the membrane is thought to be relatively constant across different chemicals and species. Hence, estimating chemical concentrations in the membrane is expected to reduce the variability of narcotic critical body residue (CBR) data. In this study, a high quality CBR dataset for three aquatic species reported recently in the literature was evaluated with the internal equilibrium distribution concept. The raw wet-weight-based CBR values were converted to membrane-weight-

Description and proposed life cycle of Maritrema novaezealandensis n. sp. (Microphallidae) parasitic in red-billed gulls, Larus novaehollandiae scopulinus, from Otago Harbor, South Island, New Zealand.

Maritrema novaezealandensis n. sp. is described from Otago Harbor, South Island, New Zealand, on the basis of adult specimens collected from the Red-billed gull, Larus novaehollandiae scopulinus, and excysted metacercariae obtained from crabs. It belongs to the "eroliae group" and differs from other related species mainly in the shape, size, and patterns of distributions of the spines on the cirrus, the shape of the metraterm, the presence of an unlobed ovary, and the complete ring of the vitelline follicles. Based on morphometric features of metacercariae and adult specimens, the trophic rela

Zinc Sulfur Nanoparticles Cause Both the Negatory Vitality and Bioaccumulation on Gammarus pulex.

In recent years, Zinc Sulphur Nanoparticles (ZnS-NPs) have a wide range of applications such as in optical sensor, solid state solar window layers, photoconductors, phosphors and catalysts. There are no clear data on the waste-enriching effects of this nanoparticle, whose annual consumption is over million tons, and concerns remain unanswered. This research was also designed to investigate lethal and sublethal toxicity, as well as survivability and bioaccumulation on Gammarus pulex for the effects of possible waste products of ZnS-NPs. After acute 96-hours experiments, while the lethal concent

Biochemical and Behavioral Responses in the Killer Shrimp Dikerogammarus villosus Following Acute Exposure to Thiacloprid and Calypso®.

Neonicotinoids are insecticides that are used globally and can persist in soil and surface water, posing a threat to ecosystems. In this study, we exposed the invasive freshwater amphipod Dikerogammarus villosus to environmentally relevant and relatively high concentrations of thiacloprid, a widely used agricultural neonicotinoid active ingredient and its commercial form Calypso® for two days. The acute effects were investigated at the behavioral (immobility time) and biochemical [glutathione S-transferase (GST) and acetylcholine esterase (AChE) activity] levels. Calypso® concentrations of 10

Phylogeography and environmental diversification of a highly adaptable marine amphipod, Gammarus duebeni.

Genetic diversity and phylogeographic population structure in the gammarid amphipod, Gammarus duebeni, were investigated across its broad latitudinal distribution in the NE and NW Atlantic by analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequence. Gammarus duebeni has exceptional tolerance of salinity change and inhabits environments ranging from marine to freshwater. The longstanding debate on whether there are distinct marine and freshwater subspecies was assessed by sampling populations from sites characterized by different salinities. Our sequence data demonstrates that there are two major lineages, with

Whole-sediment toxicity identification evaluation tools for pyrethroid insecticides: I. Piperonyl butoxide addition.

Piperonyl butoxide (PBO) is a synergist used in some pyrethroid and pyrethrin pesticide products and has been used in toxicity identification evaluations (TIEs) of water samples to indicate organophosphate or pyrethroid-related toxicity. Methods were developed and validated for use of PBO as a TIE tool in whole-sediment testing to help establish if pyrethroids are the cause of toxicity observed in field-collected sediments. Pyrethroid toxicity was increased slightly more than twofold in 10-d sediment toxicity tests with Hyalella azteca exposed to 25 microg/L of PBO in the overlying water. This

Variability in site-specific pyrethroid KOC and KDOC partition coefficients and implications for predicted aquatic toxicity.

The equilibrium partitioning methodology has been used to estimate the bioavailable or freely dissolved concentrations (Cfree) of pyrethroid insecticides in both sediments and the water column of aquatic systems. Typically, single default values for the organic carbon-water (KOC) and dissolved organic carbon-water (KDOC) partition coefficients are used to estimate the bioavailability of a given pyrethroid across sample sites. However, sorption capacities can vary across samples due to the varying quality of organic carbon among other factors. In this study, KOC and KDOC coefficients were exper

Hydrogen sulfide, hypoxia, and low salinity tolerance of deep-sea amphipods (Pseudorchomene sp.) collected from the sea floor off Joetsu, Sea of Japan.

Experimental data contributing to the assessment of the environmental impact of deep-sea resource development is very scarce due to limited research opportunities and the difficulty of biological sampling. Experiments using deep-sea organisms are difficult to conduct in deep-sea in situ environments and are more realistically conducted in land-based research facilities. In this study, the environmental tolerance experiments, including hydrogen sulfide (H2S), low salinity, and hypoxia, were conducted on a deep-sea amphipod (Pseudorchomene sp.) collected from the seafloor with water temperature

Comparing the toxicity of nitrate between different species of subterranean Niphargus amphipods.

This study investigates the sensitivity of subterranean amphipods of the genus Niphargus to nitrate pollution, focusing on understanding possible differences between cave-dwelling and spring-dwelling species. Five ecologically distinct subterranean crustacean species of the genus Niphargus were studied, three from springs at the interface between surface and subterranean ecosystems (Niphargus timavi, Niphargus spinulifemur, Niphargus sphagnicolus) and two from cave streams (Niphargus stygius, Niphargus podpecanus), together with Daphnia magna for comparative toxicity assessment. Differential effects of pharmaceuticals and insecticides on swimming behaviour and survival in Gammarus pulex.

Many freshwater systems are continuously exposed to waste streams like municipal wastewater and agricultural runoff, leading to exposure to chemicals that can cause mortality and behavioural changes in aquatic organisms. While research has advanced our understanding of pesticide effects on behaviour of aquatic organisms, the impacts of pharmaceuticals are less understood. Psychopharmaceuticals are particularly interesting because they can act on nervous systems, potentially affecting the behaviour of aquatic organisms. Sublethal behavioural effects can be crucial in ecotoxicological research f

Proteogenomic reconstruction of organ-specific metabolic networks in an environmental sentinel species, the amphipod Gammarus fossarum.

Metabolic pathways are affected by the impacts of environmental contaminants underlying a large variability of toxic effects across different species. However, the systematic reconstruction of metabolic pathways remains limited in environmental sentinel species due to the lack of available genomic data in many taxa of animal diversity. In this study we used a multi-omics approach to reconstruct the most comprehensive map of metabolic pathways for a crustacean model in biomonitoring, the amphipod Gammarus fossarum in order to improve the knowledge of the metabolism of this sentinel species. We

Microsporidian Parasites Found in the Hemolymph of Four Baikalian Endemic Amphipods.

At present, approximately 187 genera and over 1300 species of Microsporidia have been described, among which almost half infect aquatic species and approximately 50 genera potentially infect aquatic arthropods. Lake Baikal is the deepest and one of the oldest lakes in the world, and it has a rich endemic fauna with a predominance of arthropods. Among the arthropods living in this lake, amphipods (Crustacea) are the most dominant group and are represented by more than 350 endemic species. Baikalian amphipods inhabit almost all depths and all types of substrates. The age and geographical isolati

Antibody staining of Parhyale hawaiensis embryos.

The great diversity of arthropod body plans, together with our detailed understanding of fruit fly development, makes arthropods a premier taxon for examining the evolutionary diversification of developmental patterns and hence the diversity of extant life. Crustaceans, in particular, show a remarkable range of morphologies and provide a useful outgroup to the insects. The amphipod crustacean Parhyale hawaiensis is becoming established as a model organism for developmental studies within the arthropods. This protocol provides a simplified protocol for antibody staining of P. hawaiensis embryos

Impacts of artificial light at night on interactions between four trematode parasites and their marine invertebrate hosts: species-specific effects?

Parasitism is influenced by anthropogenic stressors, among which artificial light at night (ALAN) remains understudied. With the expansion of urban areas and the development of lighting technology, the range and intensity of ALAN's effects on host-parasite interactions are increasing. Trematodes, with their complex life cycles, are particularly sensitive to anthropogenic stressors, especially during the transmission of motile cercariae (infective stages) from the first to the second intermediate host while exposed to external conditions. We examined how three types of ALAN (warm white LED, col

Olivine avoidance behaviour by marine gastropods (Littorina littorea L.) and amphipods (Gammarus locusta L.) within the context of ocean alkalinity enhancement.

Gigaton scale atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) removal (CDR) is needed to keep global warming below 1.5 °C. Coastal enhanced olivine weathering is a CDR technique that could be implemented in coastal management programmes, but its CO2 sequestration potential and environmental safety remain uncertain. Large scale olivine spreading would change the surficial sediment characteristics, which could potentially reduce habitat suitability and ultimately result in community composition changes. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the avoidance response of the marine gastropod Littorina littorea (

Subcellular Distribution of Dietary Methyl-Mercury in Gammarus fossarum and Its Impact on the Amphipod Proteome.

The transfer of methyl-Hg (MeHg) from food is central for its effects in aquatic animals, but we still lack knowledge concerning its impact on invertebrate primary consumers. In aquatic environments, cell walls of plants are particularly recalcitrant to degradation and as such remain available as a food source for long periods. Here, the impact at the proteomic level of dietary MeHg in Gammarus fossarum was established and linked to subcellular distribution of Hg. Individuals of G. fossarum were fed with MeHg in cell wall or intracellular compartments of Elodea nuttallii. Hg concentrations in

The diversity of microsporidian parasites infecting the Holarctic amphipod Gammarus lacustris from the Baikal region is dominated by the genus Dictyocoela.

Microsporidia are a highly diverse group of single-celled eukaryotic parasites related to fungi and infecting hosts belonging to all groups of eukaryotes, including some protists, invertebrate and vertebrate animals. We investigated the diversity of microsporidia in the Holarctic amphipod species Gammarus lacustris from mostly, but not limited to, water bodies in the Lake Baikal region. Ribosomal DNA sequencing and host transcriptome sequencing data from various works show that this species is predominantly infected by representatives of the genus Dictyocoela and probably has some features und
