Endocrine causes of calcium disorders.

Endocrine diseases that may cause hypercalcemia and hypocalcemia include hyperparathyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, thyroid disorders, hyperadrenocorticism, hypoadrenocorticism, and less commonly pheochromocytoma and multiple endocrine neoplasias. The differential diagnosis of hypercalcemia may include malignancy (lymphoma, anal sac carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma), hyperparathyroidism, vitamin D intoxication, chronic renal disease, hypoadrenocorticism, granulomatous disorders, osteolysis, or spurious causes. Hypocalcemia may be caused by puerperal tetany, pancreatitis, intestinal malabso

[A synovial cyst accompanied by asymptomatic lumbar vertebral fracture requiring differentiation from spinal metastasis].

We experienced a case with a synovial cyst accompanied by asymptomatic lumbar vertebral fracture that required differentiation from spinal metastasis. An 82-year-old man suffered from right leg and anal pain. Computed tomography (CT) showed L5 spondylolysis. Magnetic resonance images (MRI) revealed an intra spinal cyst and acute lumbar vertebral fracture of L5 vertebral body. The surrounding area of the cyst presented contrast enhancement, and the extradural mass compressed the dural sac. Bone scintigraphy with 99m technetium-MDP demonstrated intense uptake on the right first, fourth, fifth, a

Recurrent rectal prolapse caused by colonic duplication in a dog.

A 9-month-old female Shar Pei cross-bred dog was presented with a history of recurrent rectal prolapse over 7 months. Repeated reduction and anal purse string sutures and subsequent incisional colopexy failed to prevent recurrent rectal prolapse. Digital rectal examination following reduction of the prolapse identified a faeces-filled sac within the ventral wall of the rectum and an orifice in the ventral colonic wall, cranial to the pubic brim. A ventral, communicating tubular colonic duplication was diagnosed by means of a barium enema. Surgical excision of the duplicated colonic tube was pe

Successful separation of pygopagus conjoined twins and primary skin closure using V-shaped flaps.

Pygopagus conjoined twins were born by caesarean section at 34 weeks of gestation. Initial evaluation revealed no other abnormalities apart from their attachment at lower back, buttocks and perineum. They had two separate anal and urogenital openings. Their investigations included roentgenograms, ultrasound, barium enema, cystourethrogram, CT scan and MRI. There were two separate spinal columns fused distally at the lower sacral level. Lower gastrointestinal studies showed two separate rectums and cystourethrogram showed normal and separate urinary tracts. MRI showed a single dural sac between

Histopathologic observations of anorectal abnormalities in anal atresia.

Over the years from 1992 to 1997, 41 anorectal malformations (ARM) with histopathologic alterations were investigated to determine which morphologic abnormalities of the distal rectum accompany ARMs. Three other cases showed normal neuromuscular morphology; 9 further cases could not be evaluated owing to scanty biopsies. All resected specimens were caudocranially coiled and cryostat cut at -20 degrees C into serial sections, which were stained with a lactic dehydrogenase, succinic dehydrogenase, nitroxide synthase, and acetylcholinesterase reaction as well as hemalum and sirius red. Ten low, 1

Cauda equina syndrome caused by the application of DuraSealTM in a microlaminectomy surgery: A case report.

BACKGROUND: The management of dural tears is important. While a massive dura can be repaired with absorbable suture lines, cerebrospinal fluid leakage can be attenuated by dural sealant when an unintended tiny durotomy occurs intraoperatively. DuraSeal is often used because it can expand to seal tears. This case emphasizes the need for caution when DuraSeal is used as high expansion can cause complications following microlaminectomy. CASE SUMMARY: A 77-year-old woman presented with L2/3 and L3/4 lateral recess stenosis. She underwent microlaminectomy, foraminal decompression, and disk height

Description of two new species of Haliplectus Cobb, 1913 (Nematoda, Plectida, Haliplectidae) from mangrove areas of Sandspit backwater, Karachi, Pakistan.

Haliplectus shahinae n. sp. and H. sandspitensis n. sp. two free-living marine nematodes of the family Haliplectidae Chitwood, 1951 collected from mangrove areas of Sandspit backwater, Karachi, Pakistan, are being described and illustrated. Both new species belong to a group of species characterized by the presence of a bipartite basal esophageal bulb with striated or unstriated valve plates. H. shahinae n. sp. is characterized by its comparatively shorter body length (0.4-0.44 mm); annulated cuticle; amphidial fovea at 6-9 µm from the anterior end; bipartite basal bulb with unstriated valve p

Human pseudotail associated with diastematomyelia: A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: The human tail is just the distal remnant coccygeal appendage of the embryonic tail. It may be formed by muscle or fatty tissue and by cartilage or bone covered with skin. Many cases may be associated with spinal dysraphism. The case presented here is of a child with a human pseudotail in the region of the lumbar spine associated with diastematomyelia. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 4-year-old girl presented with pain and bulging in the lumbar spine. On neurologic examination, there were no motor or sensory deficits, the urinary and anal sphincters were normal. Imaging examinations (computed

Health-related welfare prioritisation of canine disorders using electronic health records in primary care practice in the UK.

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based comparison of the disorder-specific welfare burdens of major canine conditions could better inform targeting of stakeholder resources, to maximise improvement of health-related welfare in UK dogs. Population-level disease related welfare impact offers a quantitative, welfare-centred framework for objective disorder prioritisation, but practical applications have been limited to date due to sparse reliable evidence on disorder-specific prevalence, severity and duration across the canine disease spectrum. The VetCompass™ Programme collects de-identified electronic heal

Case report: Sacral agenesis in two boxer dogs: clinical presentation, diagnostic investigations, and outcome.

Two boxer dogs from the same litter were presented at 3 months of age for urinary and fecal incontinence. Both dogs had an abnormal tail consisting of a small stump, an atonic anal sphincter, and absent perineal reflex and sensation. Neurological evaluation was indicative of a lesion of the cauda equina or sacral spinal cord. Radiology and CT scan of the spine displayed similar findings in the two dogs that were indicative of sacral agenesis. Indeed, they had 6 lumbar vertebrae followed by a lumbosacral transitional vertebra, lacking a complete spinous process, and a hypoplastic vertebra carry

Cauda equina syndrome without motor dysfunction following lumbar spinal stenosis surgery: A case report.

RATIONALE: Cauda equina syndrome (CES) refers to a group of symptoms that occur when the nerves in the cauda equina become compressed or damaged. The most common etiology of CES is lumbar intervertebral disc herniation, but CES following lumbar spinal surgery is rare, especially without motor dysfunction. Herein, we illustrate a case of CES that developed as a complication of spinal surgery and to deduce its possible underlying cause. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 46-year-old man experienced lumbago, bilateral shank pain, and numbness with neurogenic claudication for 3 years due to degenerative lumbar

Spinal Hernia Repair and Cauda Equina Repositioning after Lumbar Decompression under Three-Dimensional Microscopy: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Cauda equina herniation (CEH) is a relatively rare and severe perioperative complication that may occur after lumbar spine surgery. Here, we present a case report of a 36-year-old female patient who experienced CEH after an endoscopic L5-S1 laminectomy and discectomy. The patient presented with right L5-S1 radiculopathy that correlated with findings in medical imaging and physical examination. Subsequently, she underwent endoscopic L5-S1 laminotomy and discectomy. A day after the operation, the patient developed urine leakage, hematochezia, aggravated constipation, and found no relief from pai

Molecular Cloning and Functional Analysis of Lumbricin in Urechis unicinctus.

Lumbricin, a classic proline-rich antimicrobial peptide (PrAMP), has been primarily characterized in terrestrial clitellates, with limited reports in other annelid lineages, leaving a critical knowledge gap regarding its presence and immune roles in marine invertebrates. The echiuran worm Urechis unicinctus lives in microbe-laden intertidal mudflats and depends on innate immunity against pathogens, yet its lumbricin homologs have remained unreported. In this study, we aimed to clone full-length lumbricin cDNA and systematically characterize its molecular traits, tissue distribution, LPS (lipop

Hybrid approach using laparoscopy and transanal minimally invasive surgery to treat rectal cancer with invasion to the seminal vesicles.

We treated a 64-year-old man for rectal cancer with direct invasion to the seminal vesicles and no distant metastases by complete resection with laparoscopy and transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS). We inserted the TAMIS device into the anal canal to above the anorectal ring and dissected to prostate level. High ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery and vein was performed by standard medial laparoscopy. The sigmoid and descending colon were mobilized, and in the postrectal space, we dissected to the space made by TAMIS. The membranous peritoneum was dissected on both sides of the

Sacral agenesis and caudal spinal cord malformations.

Thirty-three children and one adult with sacral agenesis (SA) were studied by computed tomographic myelography and/or magnetic resonance imaging and were monitored for a mean period of 4.7 years. Four children had the OEIS (concurrent omphalocele, cloacal exstrophy, imperforate anus, and spinal deformities) complex, and three others had VATER (vertebral abnormality, anal imperforation, tracheoesophageal fistula, and renal-radial anomalies) syndrome. All patients shared some of the characteristic features of SA, namely, a short, intergluteal cleft, flattened buttocks, narrow hips, distal leg at

CEREBELLAR AND MESENCEPHALON NEOPLASIA IN A NILE HIPOPPOTAMUS (HIPPOPOTAMUS AMPHIBIOUS).

A 52-yr-old female Nile hippopotamus ( Hippopotamus amphibious ) was presented for acute onset anorexia, depression, lethargy, instability, and weakness in the pelvic limbs. Clinical signs were rapidly progressive, despite empiric therapy with anti-inflammatory medications, resulting in the death of the animal. Gross necropsy evaluation revealed two tan, firm masses in the cerebellum and mesencephalon and a single mass in the right cranial adrenal gland. All three masses had a similar histologic morphology, and immunohistochemical investigation confirmed the general diagnosis of an adenocarcin

The Presence of a Functionally Tripartite Through-Gut in Ctenophora Has Implications for Metazoan Character Trait Evolution.

The current paradigm of gut evolution assumes that non-bilaterian metazoan lineages either lack a gut (Porifera and Placozoa) or have a sac-like gut (Ctenophora and Cnidaria) and that a through-gut originated within Bilateria [1-8]. An important group for understanding early metazoan evolution is Ctenophora (comb jellies), which diverged very early from the animal stem lineage [9-13]. The perception that ctenophores possess a sac-like blind gut with only one major opening remains a commonly held misconception [4, 5, 7, 14, 15]. Despite descriptions of the ctenophore digestive system dating to

Detection of carcinoma micrometastases in bone marrow of dogs and cats using conventional and cell block cytology.

BACKGROUND: The presence of human breast carcinoma micrometastases in bone marrow is associated with poor overall survival, poor breast-cancer-specific survival, poor disease-free survival, and poor distant disease-free survival. In veterinary practice, the detection of micrometastases as a component of clinical staging is a routine practice for lymphomas and mast cell tumors, but not for carcinomas. OBJECTIVES: This prospective study evaluated whether the identification of micrometastases from various carcinomas in dogs and cats in bone marrow using cell block cytology is technically feasibl

A new species of Microeledone from Galápagos Islands and an amended diagnosis of the Megaleledonidae (Octopoda: Incirrata).

The octopod fauna of the deep tropical Pacific Ocean remains poorly known, as is the octopod family Megaleledonidae Taki. A single female megaleledonid specimen collected at 1773 m depth near the equatorial Galápagos island of Darwin is named Microeledone galapagensis sp. nov. This small, squat, short-armed octopod has few arm suckers and gill lamellae. Its lack of a crop diverticulum, ink sac, and anal flaps suggests that it pertains to Thaumeledone. However, its smooth skin, which dorsally is nearly free of pigment, large rachidian tooth, and large funnel organ ally it with the monotypic Mic
