Infection dynamics of the tick-borne pathogen "Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis" and coinfections with Borrelia afzelii in bank voles in Southern Sweden.

The tick-borne bacterium "Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis" has recently been recognized as a human pathogen. Together with Borrelia afzelii, it is one of the most common pathogens found in the tick Ixodes ricinus. Here, we compared the epidemiologies of "Ca. Neoehrlichia mikurensis" and B. afzelii by longitudinal sampling from May to September in one of their most abundant vertebrate hosts, the bank vole (Myodes glareolus), using real-time PCR for detection and quantification. The prevalences of "Ca. Neoehrlichia mikurensis" and B. afzelii were determined to be 19% (50/261) and 22% (56/261)

Molecular Survey of Rodent-Borne Infectious Agents in the Ferlo Region, Senegal.

Zoonotic pathogens are responsible for most infectious diseases in humans, with rodents being important reservoir hosts for many of these microorganisms. Rodents, thus, pose a significant threat to public health. Previous studies in Senegal have shown that rodents harbour a diversity of microorganisms, including human pathogens. Our study aimed to monitor the prevalence of infectious agents in outdoor rodents, which can be the cause of epidemics. We screened 125 rodents (both native and expanding) from the Ferlo region, around Widou Thiengoly, for different microorganisms. Analysis, performed

Investigation of erythema migrans patients identifies Borrelia species and Neoehrlichia mikurensis with implications for clinical assessment.

Emerging tick-borne infections pose public health challenges and may complicate treatment decisions. The EMBio study, a multicenter observational study, aims to describe erythema migrans (EM), an early localized manifestation of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) infection, and investigate the occurrence of tick-borne co-infections among patients presenting with this skin lesion. Additionally, the study seeks to determine relations between EM morphology, other clinical manifestations, specific pathogens, and disease prognosis. Clinical characteristics, skin biopsies, and blood samples were

New perspectives on rickettsial evolution from new genome sequences of rickettsia, particularly R. canadensis, and Orientia tsutsugamushi.

The complete genome sequences available for eight species of Rickettsia and information for other near relatives in the Rickettsiales including Orientia and species of Anaplasmataceae are a rich resource for comparative analyses of the evolution of these obligate intracellular bacteria. Differences in these organisms have permitted them to colonize varied intracellular compartments, arthropod vectors, and vertebrate reservoirs in both pathogenic and symbiotic relationships. We summarize some comparative aspects of the genomes of these organisms, paying particular attention to the recently comp

Tick-borne pathogens in small mammals from the Pantanal biome, Brazil.

The order Piroplasmida (e.g., Babesia, Theileria, Cytauxzoon, and Rangelia) and order Eucoccidiorida, Suborder Adelorina (e.g., Hepatozoon) comprise protozoa of the phylum Apicomplexa. At the same time, the Anaplasmataceae family (Order Rickettsiales) encompasses important bacterial pathogens, notably the genera Anaplasma and Ehrlichia. All these genera of agents have pathogenic species transmitted to vertebrate hosts via ticks and pose significant economic, veterinary, and medical concerns. Biological samples of small mammals (Rodentia and Didelphiomorphia) collected between 2015 and 2018, as

Zoonotic Pathogens in Eurasian Beavers (Castor fiber) in the Netherlands.

Successful repopulation programs of Eurasian beavers (Castor fiber) have resulted in an increase in beaver populations throughout Europe. This may be of public health relevance because beavers can host multiple zoonotic pathogens. From March 2018 to March 2020, opportunistic testing of dead beavers was performed for hepatitis E virus, orthohantavirus, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Bartonella spp., extended-spectrum-betalactamase or AmpC (ESBL/AmpC-)-producing Enterobacteriaceae, Francisella tularensis, Leptospira spp., Neoehrlichia mikurensis, Babesia spp., Echinococcus multilocularis, Toxoplasma

Genetic diversity of vector-borne pathogens in spotted and brown hyenas from Namibia and Tanzania relates to ecological conditions rather than host taxonomy.

BACKGROUND: Improved knowledge on vector-borne pathogens in wildlife will help determine their effect on host species at the population and individual level and whether these are affected by anthropogenic factors such as global climate change and landscape changes. Here, samples from brown hyenas (Parahyaena brunnea) from Namibia (BHNA) and spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) from Namibia (SHNA) and Tanzania (SHTZ) were screened for vector-borne pathogens to assess the frequency and genetic diversity of pathogens and the effect of ecological conditions and host taxonomy on this diversity. Dynamics, co-infections and characteristics of zoonotic tick-borne pathogens in Hokkaido small mammals, Japan.

Many of the emerging infectious diseases originate in wildlife and many of them are caused by vector-borne pathogens. In Japan, zoonotic tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) are frequently detected in both ticks and wildlife. Here, we studied the infection rates of potentially zoonotic species, including Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, Neoehrlichia and Babesia spp., in Hokkaido's most abundant small mammals as they relate to variable extrinsic factors that might affect the infection rates of these pathogens. A total of 412 small mammals including 64 Apodemus argenteus, 219 Apodemus speciosus, 78 Myodes rufocanus

Neoehrlichia mikurensis infection associated with lymphoma or mimicking lymphoma in two cohorts of Swedish patients.

The tick-borne bacterium Neoehrlichia (N.) mikurensis causes latent infections that can become symptomatic when B-cell defenses are compromised. We investigated the prevalence of N. mikurensis in two cohorts of Swedish patients: a prospective cohort (n = 186) evaluated for lymphoma and a retrospective cohort (n = 198) diagnosed with seven lymphomas. Samples were tested for N. mikurensis by PCR. Nine of 116 patients (7.8%) diagnosed with lymphoma in the prospective cohort, and 7/198 (3.5%) in the retrospective cohort had a concomitant N. mikurensis infection. Indolent lymphomas, particularly ma

Dual detection of Neoehrlichia mikurensis and Anaplasma phagocytophilum: How biplex PCR led in France to the diagnosis of neoehrlichiosis in post-tick bite fever.

OBJECTIVES: Neoehrlichia mikurensis (NM) is an emerging intracellular bacterium member of the Anaplasmatacecae family. So far, only four cases have been described in France, all of them retrospectively. METHODS: This study describes two new cases of NM discovered following implementation of a biplex PCR targeting both Anaplasma and NM. RESULTS: Two immunocompetent patients developed a flu-like illness within 14 days after an identified tick bite. Both had negative Anaplasma PCR, but by using this biplex PCR NM, infection was diagnosed in both cases. One patient recovered spontaneously while

Prevalence and Risk Factor Analysis of Feline Blood-Borne Pathogens in Bangkok and Vicinities, Thailand.

Feline blood-borne pathogens are important infectious agents of cats that can cause subclinical to severe disease. Awareness of the risks associated with transfusing contaminated blood can reduce morbidity in recipients. Understanding the prevalence and risk factors of these infections is crucial for identifying pathogens that should be screened in feline blood donors. A total of 410 blood samples from client-owned cats were collected between 2018 and 2021 across veterinary hospitals in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area. Conventional PCR was used to detect hemotropic mycoplasmas, Bartonella spp.,

Apicomplexans in small mammals from Chile, with the first report of the Babesia microti group in South American rodents.

Small mammals play an essential role as disseminators of pathogens because they reach high population densities and have ubiquitous distributions. In the Northern Hemisphere rodents are well recognized as reservoirs for tick-borne bacteria of the Anaplasmataceae family and also apicomplexan protozoans. In contrast, South American rodents hosting these microorganisms have been rarely identified. In this study, we collected blood from rodents and marsupials in northern Chile and screened for Anaplasmataceae bacteria and apicomplexan protozoa. Overall, 14.7% of the samples were positive for Babes

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) and tickborne pathogens (Rickettsiales) associated with hosts at Zoo Miami.

Incidence of tickborne diseases is increasing in the United States, with nearly half a million cases estimated to occur annually. The rising burden of tickborne disease in the United States underscores the need to investigate the presence and prevalence of tick species and associated pathogens. Southern Florida serves as an introductory point for non-native invasive reptiles, amphibians, and ectoparasites due to the region's international ports and tropical climate. At Zoo Miami, visitors are near exhibit animals and free-living invasive species, including cane toads and green iguanas. This st
