Comparative evaluation of oxytetracycline and an herbal formulation in the treatment of bovine anaplasmosis.

The present study evaluated and compared the therapeutic efficacy of oxytetracycline and a standardized polyherbal formulation in cattle naturally infected with Anaplasma marginale. A total of 30 cattle were screened, of which 20 animals confirmed positive by Giemsa-stained blood smear and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were randomly allocated into two treatment groups: Group I received oxytetracycline (10 mg/kg body weight, intravenously for five days), while Group II received a polyherbal medicinal powder (5 g/animal/day orally for ten days), both along with supportive therapy. Ten apparent

Clonal T Cell Proliferation Induced by Acute Anaplasmosis in a Dog.

A 4-year-old spayed female Golden Retriever was examined for hindlimb lameness, lethargy, poor appetite, and pyrexia 3 weeks after the removal of numerous ticks. Complete blood count revealed moderate thrombocytopenia and mild lymphopenia. A SNAP 4Dx test was negative for Borrelia burgdorferi, Ehrlichia spp., Anaplasma spp., and Dirofilaria immitis. Abdominal ultrasound identified moderate mesenteric lymphadenopathy and regionally hyperechoic mesentery. Joint fluid cytology raised concern for large cell lymphoma. Flow cytometry identified 37% aberrant large CD4+ T cells, suggesting lymphoma. P

Unraveling the genetic mechanisms governing the host response to bovine anaplasmosis.

Bovine anaplasmosis caused by Anaplasma marginale is a tick-borne disease of livestock with widespread prevalence and huge economic implications. In order to get new insights into modulation of host gene expression in response to natural infections of anaplasmosis, this study is the first attempt that compared the transcriptome profiles of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of A. marginale infected and healthy crossbred cattle. Transcriptome analysis identified shared as well as unique functional pathways in the two groups. Translation and structural constituent of ribosome were the im

Diagnostic tools of caprine and ovine anaplasmosis: a direct comparative study.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of anaplasmosis is rather conflicting with other haemoprotozoans. Hence, the study aimed to compare and evaluate the efficiency of competitive ELISA (cELISA), indirect fluorescence antibody (IFA), and Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for precise diagnosis of Anaplasma spp. and to assess their concordance with microscopic examination (ME). RESULTS: A total of 312 blood samples (189 sheep and 123 goats) were examined for Anaplasma infection during a 1 year period. Giemsa-stained blood smears were examined under the microscope. IFA and cELISA were used for the detection

Bovine anaplasmosis and tick-borne pathogens in cattle of the Galapagos Islands.

A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the species of Anaplasma spp. and estimate its prevalence in cattle of the three main cattle-producing Galapagos Islands (Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal and Isabela) using indirect PCR assays, genetic sequencing and ELISA. Ticks were also collected from cattle and scanned for 47 tick-borne pathogens in a 48 × 48 real-time PCR chip. A mixed effects logistic regression was performed to identify potential risk factors explaining Anaplasma infection in cattle. A. phagocytophilum was not detected in any of the tested animals. Genetic sequencing allowed

A clinical, diagnostic, and ecologic perspective on human anaplasmosis in the Upper Midwest.

INTRODUCTION: Human anaplasmosis caused by the bacterial pathogen Anaplasma phagocytophilum was first discovered in the Upper Midwest in 1990. Since that time the number of cases in the region has steadily increased, such that today, the pathogen rivals that of Lyme disease in causing human tick-borne-related illness. OBJECTIVE: We provide an overview of the biology, clinical characteristics, and epidemiology of the disease in the Upper Midwest and discuss currently available diagnostic methods. FINDINGS: Rapid differentiation of anaplasmosis from other acute febrile illnesses and targeted t

Estimation of the potential demand for a bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis vaccine in Argentina.

A survey to estimate the potential demand for a bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis vaccine was carried out by a postal questionnaire sent to 4407 veterinarians in the north and centre of Argentina. Twenty-three percent of the questionnaires (1047) were answered; 317 (7.2% of the total, 30% of those answered) pointed out the occurrence of the diseases and/or probable demand for the vaccine. The minimum and maximum demands were 407,892 and 982,300 doses for anaplasmosis, and 272,496 and 631,400 doses for babesiosis, respectively. The results presented from here onwards are based on the minimum d

Clinical and serological evidence of bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis in St. Lucia.

One hundred fifty-nine Holstein calves were imported into St. Lucia from the U.S.A. An outbreak of babesiosis occurred 17 days post-arrival, and an outbreak of anaplasmosis occurred 5 months after importation. Sera obtained 3, 6, and 12 months post-importation revealed a high prevalence of IFA titres to Babesia bovis and B. Bigemina 3 months after arrival and an increase in titres to Anaplasma marginale 6 months after arrival. Sera obtained from native cattle from several places on the island indicated infection rates of 80, 65 and 64% with A. marginale, B. bigemina and B. bovis, respectively.

Strategies for the Diagnosis of Granulocytic Anaplasmosis in Two Naturally Infected Dogs.

This study describes granulocytic anaplasmosis in two dogs naturally infected with Anaplasma phagocytophilum. The 3-year-old dogs (male and female) came from the same household and were referred to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Iasi for blood donation. They were subject to standard routine tests: haematology blood test, blood smear, and serological tests (VETSCAN® FLEX4 and IDEXX SNAP 4Dx Plus). The female dog had no medical problems, while the male dog experienced joint pain. The blood smear was negative for tick-borne pathogens, and the haematology findings indicated thrombocytopenia

Epidemiological Study Related to the First Outbreak of Ovine Anaplasmosis in Spain.

Ovine anaplasmosis is a vector-borne disease caused by Anaplasma ovis and mainly transmitted through tick bites. In Spain, the first outbreak of ovine anaplasmosis occurred in 2014. An epidemiological study in fifty-one farms was carried out associated with this outbreak in the affected geographical area. An epidemiological questionnaire was performed. In addition, whole blood samples were taken for molecular analysis in 47 of these farms to determine the prevalence of infection of Anaplasma ovis. A. ovis was present in 44 out of 47 PCR-analysed farms (93.6%). However, only 40.4% of the studie

First Report on Molecular Characterization of Anaplasmosis in Small Ruminants in Pakistan.

Anaplasmosis is caused by a Gram-negative obligate intracellular bacterium of the genus Anaplasma with the pathogen having a zoonotic impact. The study aimed to estimate the prevalence of anaplasmosis in Pakistan, to unravel the association of potential risk factors, and to investigate the effect on hematological parameters in affected small ruminants. A total of 150 (n = 75 sheep; n = 75 goats) blood samples were initially screened microscopically and then subjected to PCR targeting the amplification of the 16S rRNA gene fragment of Anaplasma. The PCR-based positive samples were then processe
