Cervical Rib Synostosis to the First Rib: A Rare Anatomic Variation.

BACKGROUND: Congenital anatomic variations exist in human anatomy, which create both diagnostic and treatment challenges. Understanding the osteologic and radiographic anatomy of supernumerary ribs arising from the cervical spine and recognizing the morphologic variations thereof is of great importance to clinicians, radiologists, and surgeons alike. CASE DESCRIPTION: This case study describes osteologic morphology and radiologic characteristics of a rare anatomic variant of a cervical rib (CR): a unilateral, right-sided CR synostosis to the first thoracic rib of a 50-year-old South African m

Variation of stratum corneum biophysical and molecular properties with anatomic site.

Several serine protease enzymes are known to be involved in both normal desquamation and the inflammatory processes of the skin. Alteration in the activity of these proteases should also affect corneocyte maturity and size as well as stratum corneum thickness. The aim of the present work was to characterise the baseline changes in corneocyte size, corneocyte maturity, selected protease activity (specifically, Kallikreins-5 and 7, tryptase), protein content and trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) as a function of anatomic site. The anatomic sites investigated were: cheek, abdomen, wrist and mid-v

Anatomic variation of the corpus callosum in persons with gender dysphoria.

Previous postmortem anatomical studies have demonstrated differences between male and female in the size and shape of the splenium of the corpus callosum. The current study using the magnetic resonance imager compares the corpus callosum in 20 transsexuals and 40 controls to determine if the anatomic variance is related to anatomic sex or gender identity. No statistical differences were found in the cross-sectional areas of the entire corpus callosum, regardless of genetic sex or gender. However, the genetic males did have a larger whole-brain cross-sectional area. Also, even though there was

Variation in insertion of the abductor digiti minimi: an anatomic study.

We dissected 70 cadaver hands to examine the anatomy of the insertion of the abductor digiti minimi (ADM). The insertion had 2 forms. In 58 hands the insertion of the ADM was divided into 2 tendinous portions: one attached the base of the proximal phalanx (bone insertion) and the other attached the extensor aponeurosis (extensor insertion). In 12 hands the bone insertion existed solely. The mean length and width of the bone insertion were 10.6 +/- 3.1 and 4.0 +/- 0.9 mm and those of the extensor insertion were 18.5 +/- 4.0 and 2.1 +/- 1.1 mm, respectively. The mean proportion of the width of t

Anatomical Variations Favouring Antrochoanal Polyp Genesis.

BACKGROUND: The antrochoanal polyp (ACP) is a rhinosinusal pseudo-tumour. Its etiopathogenesis is controversial. The antral cyst is thought to be the precursor of ACP. Certain rhinosinusal anatomical variants would favor its transformation into ACP. However, these anatomical variants remain undetermined. The aim of this study was to determine which rhino-sinusal anatomical variants are significantly associated with ACP presence. METHODS: This was a retrospective, descriptive and comparative study of 54 patients operated on for ACP. Clinical and paraclinical data were collected from medical re

Anatomical Variations of the Musculocutaneous Nerve in the Human Fetus.

OBJECTIVES: Knowing the motor branches and variations of the musculocutaneous nerve to the muscles along its course will facilitate the treatment of flexor spasticity and supracondylar fractures of the humerus in order to minimize nerve lesion. In fetal cadavers, the purpose of our study was to determine the number and course of the formation variations and motor branches of the musculocutaneous nerve. The significance of studying fetal nerve variations is due to injury to the brachial plexus roots during birth. METHODS: Our study was conducted using the anatomical dissection technique on 102

Vascular anatomical variation in laparoscopic right hemicolectomy.

Laparoscopic complete mesocolic excision is gradually becoming the standard surgical approach in colon cancer therapy, the core element of which is central vascular ligation. However, this increases the difficulty for surgeons, particularly in the context of right colectomy, which encounters complex vascular anatomy. This study aimed to examine vascular variations that occur during laparoscopic right hemicolectomy through a review of the medical literature. We demonstrated that the ICA and MCA are evident in the majority of patients. The RCA was inconsistently present ranging from 12% to 45%.

Vascular rings: a radiological review of anatomical variations.

BACKGROUND: The imaging modalities used to diagnose vascular rings have evolved over time, from basic radiographic studies to advanced cross-sectional imaging. The goal of preoperative imaging is to provide the surgeon with an accurate representation of the ring configuration so that the surgical approach may be planned. METHODS: We conducted a review of all patients with vascular rings who underwent surgery at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, Durban, South Africa from 1 July 2008 to 1 July 2013. RESULTS: Eight patients were diagnosed with vascular rings. Seven patients had an abnorma

Malreduction of syndesmosis--are we considering the anatomical variation?

Previous studies have demonstrated the need for accurate reduction of ankle syndesmosis. Measurement of syndesmosis is difficult on plain radiographs. A computed tomography (CT) scan allows better visualisation of the transverse relationship between the fibula and incisura fibularis. The difference ('G' a term we coined for ease of description) between the fibula and the anterior and posterior facets of the incisura fibularis was compared between normal and injured ankles following syndesmotic fixation in 19 patients. The mean diastasis (MD) was also calculated, representing the average measur

Anatomical variation of mental foramen. A case report.

We have reported a case of triple mental foramina at the right side of the premolar region, which was discovered during reposition and ostheosynthesis of a mandible fracture. A review of the literature, was performed which disclosed no previous clinical cases reported but an incidence of 1.2% of triple foramina after investigating dry skulls or radiographics. The discussion stresses the importance of adequate preoperative radiological examination in the clinical situation especially when closed surgery is planned.

[An anatomical variation: the aberrant termination of the thoracic duct].

In a male cadaver dissected at the Department of Morphology, University del Valle, Call (Colombia), a rarely described anatomical variation was found. It consisted of an aberrant termination or drainage of the thoracic lymph duct. Normally, this duct ascends in the thorax behind the esophagus, gradually diverges towards the left side of the neck and ends in the left jugulo-subclavian confluent--either in the internal jugular vein or in the subclavian vein. In the case of this cadaver, the thoracic duct diverged towards the right side of the neck to end in the right internal jugular vein. The p

An anatomical classification of the variations of the inferior phrenic vein.

The majority of anatomical textbooks of gross anatomy offer very little information concerning the anatomy and distribution of the inferior phrenic vein (IPV). However, in the last decade, an increasing number of reports have arisen, with reference to the endoscopic embolization of esophageal and paraesophageal varices, as well as venous drainage of hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC). The IPV is one of the major sources of collateral venous drainage in portal hypertension and HCC. The aim of this study was to identify the origin and distribution of the IPVs (right and left), both in normal and (s

The labiogingival notch: an anatomical variation of clinical importance.

BACKGROUND: The labiogingival notch is a developmental phenomenon affecting the maxillary central incisors. Clinically, it can be easily misdiagnosed and improperly treated. Thus, it is important for dentists to recognize this condition. CASE DESCRIPTIONS: The authors describe two cases of misdiagnosed labiogingival notch on a maxillary central incisor. In one case, the notch was misinterpreted as a carious lesion and placement of a restoration was advised. In the second case, external resorption was suspected and forced eruption of the incisor was requested. In both cases, no treatment was n

Vascular anatomic variations in second toe transfers.

To devise a new classification of vascular variations in second toe transfer we analyzed the anatomic details of the first dorsal metatarsal artery in 304 cases of second toe transplantation and the venous structure in 200 cases. According to location, the arterial vascularity was classified as superficial (18% of cases), intramuscular (54%), inframuscular (23%), and absent (5%). According to diameter, it was classified into large (16%), medium (64%), and small (20%). Based on branching pattern, the artery was classified into ramifying type (88%), main trunk (4%), and fine branch type (8%). Th
