Virilization in women is associated with increased production of testosterone as well as a variety of androgenic prehormones, including androstenedione, androstenediol, DHEA, DHEA-sulfate, dihydrotestosterone and androstanediol. BACKGROUND: Leukemia is driven by metabolic reprogramming, yet the specific causal roles of plasma metabolites in distinct leukemia subtypes remain unclear.
METHODS: This study employed Mendelian randomization (MR) to explore potential causal links between 690 plasma metabolites (and 143 metabolite ratios) and four leukemia subtypes: ALL, AML, CLL, and CML. Genetic variants from genome-wide association studies served as instrumental variables. Multiple MR approaches, including IVW, MR-Egger, and Weighted Median, along with sensitivity analyses, were applied to ensure robust results.

Steroids are primarily present in human fluids in their sulfated forms. Profiling of these compounds is important from both diagnostic and physiological points of view. Here, we present a novel method for the quantification of 11 intact steroid sulfates in human serum by LC-MS/MS. Progressive ischemia and necrosis of the skin following thermal injury are reduced by postburn administration of the steroid hormone dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Thermally injured animals were provided with a subcutaneous injection of DHEA, or a related species of steroid hormone, at various times after burning. The levels of progesterone, 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone, androstenedione, testosterone and estradiol were measured in the testicular venous effluent from a testis containing a complex malignant tumor associated with gynecomastia and increased serum levels of beta-human chorionic gonadotropin. An abnormally low testosterone/estradiol ratio was encountered (83 in the peripheral serum and 101 in the spermatic venous effluent).
