Microcytic hypochromic anemia is common in severe acute malnutrition (SAM) children, but macrocytic anemia (vitamin B12/folate deficiency) is not uncommon. Vitamin B12 deficiency leads to anemia and developmental slowing. We looked for the response of vitamin B12 supplementation on hematological and anthropometric parameters in SAM children. All children aged 1 to 60 months with SAM were included and divided in 2 groups. Group A children received vitamin B12 for 6 weeks additionally as compared with Group B. Both groups were followed up at discharge and at 6 weeks for hematological and anthrop

Both degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) and anemia are common among older patients, however insufficient data exists evaluating their co-occurrence and the influence of anemia on baseline neurological status. To address this, we examined a retrospective multicenter series of patients treated for DCM or radiculopathy. Myelopathy was graded using the Nurick scale. Established criteria for diagnosing abnormalities were used to identify blood abnormalities, including macrocytic and microcytic anemia. Multivariable regression was used to determine the impact of hematological anomalies on Nurick

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) represent uncommon tumors arising from the excessive proliferation of enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells (so-called Kulchitsky cell). Gastric NETs (GNET) represent less than 2% of all NETs and less than 1% of all stomach neoplasms. In particular, gastric NETs type 1 (associated to chronic atrophic gastritis and hypergastrinaemia) is the more frequent one, accounting for 70-80% of all GNET. A macrocytic anemia is a frequent manifestation of GNET type 1. The possibility that macrocytic anemia appear during therapy with methotrexate (MTX) is widely documented. Similarl

Congenital dyserythropoietic anemia (CDA) type-1 is a rare genetic disorder of ineffective erythropoiesis, which manifests in macrocytic anemia. We report a CDA1 patient who as a newborn presented with macrocytic anemia and persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) requiring mechanical ventilation. Post-infancy, the patient developed acral dysmorphism and pectus excavatum the latter rarely found in CDA1. Patient is a compound heterozygote for a known maternal-derived missense-mutation (c.1796A > G/p.Asn589Ser) and a novel paternal-derived deletion-mutation (c.1104_1106del/Phe365d

Pernicious anemia is uncommon in Africa. The purpose of this report is to describe a case of pernicious anemia observed in Madagascar. The revealing manifestation was encephalomyelitis with combined medullar sclerosis that responded favorably to vitamin B12 replacement therapy. Clinical symptoms included paresthesia associated with allodynia of all four extremities and with tetrapyramidal syndrome, medullar ataxia and minor cognitive disturbances ongoing for 5 months. Hemogram testing revealed macrocytic anemia. Serum cobalamin level was low. Anti-intrinsic factor antibody was detected. Spinal

BACKGROUND: Anemia predicts poor outcomes after intravenous thrombolysis in acute ischemic stroke. Whether morphological anemia subtypes differentially affect prognosis remains unclear. We evaluated the impact of microcytic, normocytic, and macrocytic anemia on outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke receiving intravenous thrombolysis.
METHODS: In this multicenter, prospective cohort study of 1367 patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with intravenous thrombolysis, anemia was defined using World Health Organization criteria and classified by mean corpuscular volume. Multivariabl

Anemia is defined as a hemoglobin level of less than the 5th percentile for age. Causes vary by age. Most children with anemia are asymptomatic, and the condition is detected on screening laboratory evaluation. Screening is recommended only for high-risk children. Anemia is classified as microcytic, normocytic, or macrocytic, based on the mean corpuscular volume. Mild microcytic anemia may be treated presumptively with oral iron therapy in children six to 36 months of age who have risk factors for iron deficiency anemia. If the anemia is severe or is unresponsive to iron therapy, the patient s

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is the most common enzymatic disorder of red blood cells worldwide and typically presents in childhood or early adulthood following exposure to oxidative stressors. Late-life diagnosis is uncommon and may be overlooked in patients without exposure to classic hemolytic triggers. We report the case of a 70-year-old man with intermittent, mild macrocytic anemia who was ultimately diagnosed with G6PD deficiency. This case highlights how G6PD deficiency may remain clinically silent for decades, discusses reasons for delayed diagnosis, and emphasiz

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of anemia increases with age. Some serious underlying conditions may lead to anemia in the old age. The present study was undertaken to detect and do morphological typing of anemia and further delineate etiological factors in elderly patients.
METHODS: In this hospital-based prevalence study carried out a tertiary care center over one and half years, a total of 90 patients were fully evaluated for etiology and typing of anemia in elderly (>60 years age) patients. Details of other significant medical and surgical history were noted. Laboratory investigations were con

Anemia is a frequently observed manifestation during the clinical course of chronic liver disease. In this study, we retrospectively reviewed the hospital files of 500 chronic liver disease patients and assessed the frequency, etiology and morphology of anemia in 50 patients who fulfilled the criteria to be included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 48+/-16 years and male/female ratio was 1.4/1. The mean hemoglobin value was 9.54+/-2.03 g/dl. The mean MCV was 82.9+/-10.52 fl. Iron deficiency anemia, defined as absent bone marrow iron stores, was the most common anemia present in 5

Anemia, defined as a hemoglobin level two standard deviations below the mean for age, is prevalent in infants and children worldwide. The evaluation of a child with anemia should begin with a thorough history and risk assessment. Characterizing the anemia as microcytic, normocytic, or macrocytic based on the mean corpuscular volume will aid in the workup and management. Microcytic anemia due to iron deficiency is the most common type of anemia in children. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization recommend routine screening for anemia at 12 months of age; the U.S. P

Background Young age is a critical period, marked by rapid growth and increased physiological demands. Young girls are particularly vulnerable to anemia due to the onset of menstruation and nutritional deficiencies. Early identification and management are key to preventing long-term health consequences. Objective The main objective of this study is to determine the prevalence, severity, and etiological pattern of anemia among young girls, and to assess their Rh blood group status in Vidisha city, India. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 200 young girls, aged 17-21 years, at a

BACKGROUND: World Health Organization recently acknowledged the proportion of anemia attributable to iron deficiency among under-five children could be lower than the previously assumed 50%. Ethiopia reported 8.6% and 12.3% prevalence of iron deficiency anemia by serum ferritin and soluble transferrin receptor respectively. However, evidence generated from large samples on the magnitude of different types of anemias is limited. We aimed to determine the prevalence and morphological types of anemia in relation to age.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using electronic records of

OBJECTIVE: Vacuoles, E1-ubiquitin-activating enzyme, X-linked, autoinflammatory, somatic (VEXAS) syndrome is a progressive systemic autoinflammatory disorder caused by somatic variants in UBA1 in blood. Previous analyses have shown discordant disease penetrance. In this study, we examine the associations between demographic features and UBA1 variant allele frequency (VAF) with disease manifestations.
METHODS: Whole exome sequencing data from 192,584 participants from Geisinger MyCode Community Health Initiative and Mount Sinai BioMe Biobank were analyzed for disease-causing variants in UBA1.

BACKGROUND: Anemia can be categorized into micro-, normo- or macrocytic anemia based on the mean corpuscular volume (MCV). This categorization might help to define the etiology of anemia.
METHODS: The cohort consisted of patients newly diagnosed with anaemia in primary care. Seven aetiologies of anaemia were defined, based on an extensive laboratory protocol. Two assumptions were tested: (i) MCV <80 fl (microcytic) excludes vitamin B12 deficiency, folic acid deficiency, suspected haemolysis and suspected bone marrow disease as anaemia aetiology. (ii) MCV >100 fl (macrocytic) excludes iron def

DNA ligase I deficiency is an extremely rare primary immunodeficiency with only 6 patients reported in the literature. Most common manifestations include radiosensitivity, macrocytic anemia, lymphopenia with an increased percentage of gamma-delta T cells, and hypogammaglobulinemia requiring replacement therapy. Two-month-old girl with delayed development, T-B-NK+ SCID, and macrocytic anemia presented features of Omenn syndrome. Whole exome sequencing revealed two novel, heterozygous variants (c.2312 G>A, p.Arg771Gly and c.776+5G>T, p.Pro260*) in the LIG1 gene (NM_000234.1). Hematopoietic

Pediatric macrocytic anemia has a varied etiology, including nutritional deficiencies, such as folate or B12 deficiency, hematological factors, and micronutrient deficiencies, such as copper deficiency. We present the case of a 9-year-old girl with a complex medical history and gastrojejunal tube (G-J tube)-dependent nutrition who developed macrocytic anemia due to copper deficiency. Despite receiving enteral nutrition, her dietary copper intake was insufficient, leading to hematological abnormalities. Copper supplementation resulted in the normalization of hematological indices, highlighting

An 81-year-old woman presented to our hospital with anemia. Complete blood counts revealed macrocytic anemia; however, serum vitamin B12 and folate levels were normal. Bone marrow aspiration revealed multilineage dysplasia, and the patient was initially diagnosed with refractory cytopenia and multilineage dysplasia subtype of myelodysplastic syndrome. However, blood smear revealed hypersegmented neutrophils and bone marrow aspiration showed remarkable megaloblastic changes of erythroid cells. Based on these findings, the patient was administered 1,500 µg mecobalamin per day on a trial basis. T
