[Clinical forms and differential diagnosis of angioid streaks of the retina].

The authors describe the clinical forms of complicated angioid streaks (AS) of the retina and the diagnostic symptoms of this condition that help differentiate it from other fundus oculi abnormalities. 52 patients (104 eyes) with retinal AS have been examined. Ophthalmoscopic and angiographic picture permits distinguish 4 clinical forms of complicated retinal AS: exudative hemorrhagic macular changes, non-exudative macular dystrophy, optic nerve atrophy, hemophthalmos. The underlying condition has been differentiated from central involutional retinal dystrophy, complicated myopia, central chor

Angioid streaks and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome: are they related?

BACKGROUND: Sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) has been associated with different ocular manifestations including glaucoma, floppy eye syndrome, punctate keratitis, keratoconus, and optic neuropathy. Angioid streaks are mainly associated with pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) although they can appear in other systemic conditions affecting the elastic fibers. METHODS: This is a prospective, cross-sectional study. A complete ophthalmic examination was performed in 92 patients undergoing overnight polysomnography for suspicion of OSAS. Diagnosis and classification of OSAS were made based on apnea-hypopnea

Reticular Pseudodrusen and Thin Choroid Are Associated With Angioid Streaks.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To report the association of angioid streaks in patients with Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) with reticular pseudodrusen (RPD), thin choroid, and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) atrophy using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) and short-wave autofluorescence (SWAF). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective cross-sectional study. Records of consecutive patients with angioid streaks due to PXE, who presented with a decrease of vision due to choroidal neovascularization (CNV), were reviewed for best-corrected visual acuity, color fundus photographs, SS-OCT,

Peau d'orange and angioid streaks: manifestations of Bruch membrane pathology.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to characterize peau d'orange and angioid streaks, characteristic findings in eyes of patients with pseudoxanthoma elasticum, by examining fundus photography and optical coherence tomography imaging. METHODS: Color photographs were evaluated directly as were the component red and green channels. Optical coherence tomography images were evaluated for reflectivity pattern of the band corresponding to the retinal pigment epithelium-Bruch membrane complex. RESULTS: Eighteen eyes of 9 patients with a mean age of 48.7 years (range, 31-61 years) were examined; 7 o

Angioid streaks - a rare cause of neovascular glaucoma. Case report.

Rationale. Neovascular glaucoma is the type of glaucoma most refractory to treatment. The most frequent causes are those associated with retinal hypoxia, such as proliferative diabetic retinopathy, central retinal vein occlusion, branch retinal vein occlusion, central retinal arterial occlusion, ischemic ocular syndrome etc. Rare causes of neovascular glaucoma are multiple and are due to VEGF synthesis associated with chorioretinal inflammations or degenerations. We present a case with neovascular glaucoma associated with an extremely rare cause, angioid streaks Objective. The objective of our

Comparison of fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography in angioid streaks.

BACKGROUND: The main cause of vision loss in patients with angioid streaks is choroidal neovascularization and subsequent macular degeneration. Indocyanine green angiography allows visualization of the choroidal circulation and may be superior to fluorescein angiography in the evaluation of patients with angioid streaks. METHODS: The ophthalmoscopic, fluorescein and indocyanine green angiographic characteristics of angioid streaks were studied in 34 patients with such streaks. Nineteen patients had pseudoxanthoma elasticum and 15 patients had isolated angioid streaks. The fluorescence charact

Chorioretinal vascular abnormalities associated with angioid streaks and pseudoxanthoma elasticum.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the retinal and choroidal vascular abnormalities in eyes with angioid streaks (AS) associated with pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE). METHODS: Color photographs and fluorescein angiograms of 54 eyes of 27 consecutive patients with AS and PXE were examined retrospectively. RESULTS: Four (7%) of the 54 eyes had a major vascular abnormality at the level of the disc; this took the form of a large vascular loop corresponding to an arteriovenous communication between retina and choroid in 3 eyes (6%) and an anastomosis between 2 retinal arteries in 1 eye (2%). CONCLUSION: Analy

Atypical angioid streaks in a patient with a monoallelic ABCC6 mutation.

BACKGROUND: Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is characterized by aberrant calcification of elastic tissues throughout the body causing varying degrees of skin, cardiac, and ocular disease. Although PXE is classically regarded as an autosomal recessive disease, recent reports have demonstrated a haploinsufficiency phenotype, in which carriers of monoallelic ATP-binding cassette transporter (ABCC6) gene mutations demonstrate mild manifestations of PXE. In this case report, we describe a patient with a monoallelic ABCC6 mutation and atypical angioid streaks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Case report. OB

[Subretinal neovascular membrane in angioid streaks treated with intravitreal bevacizumab].

INTRODUCTION: Angioid streaks are breaks in Bruch's membrane that may be associated, among others, with pseudoxanthoma elasticum. Its most common complication is the development of subretinal neovascular membranes (SRNVM) and the decreased vision this entails. CASE REPORT: A 28 year old woman with angioid streaks and SRNVM in the left eye, who received 3 injections of intravitreal bevacizumab, with rapid improvement in vision and stability during 11 months follow up. The finding of angioid streaks led to the diagnosis of pseudoxanthoma elasticum. CONCLUSION: Intravitreal bevacizumab should b

A Case of Angioid Streaks in Congenital Dyserythropoietic Anaemia Type II.

The authors describe a case report of retinal angioid streaks (AS) in a patient with congenital dyserythropoietic anaemia (CDA) type II and compare the retinal findings to those of an affected first-degree relative without ocular manifestations of the disease. A 52-year-old man with a confirmed diagnosis of CDA type II has been dependent on treatment with regular transfusions and chelating agents. He presents with bilateral retinal AS. The subject's brother, who also has CDA type II, underwent splenectomy in childhood, and has required no treatment since then. He has no ocular manifestations o

Clinical Characterization of Korean Patients with Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum and Angioid Streaks.

This study aimed to characterize Korean patients with pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) presenting with angioid streaks. Retinal phenotypes were longitudinally evaluated by multimodal ophthalmic imaging, and targeted gene panel sequencing for inherited retinal diseases was conducted. Seven subjects from unrelated families (median age, 51.2 years) were enrolled and followed for a median of 3.2 years. Four asymptomatic patients were significantly younger than three symptomatic patients with decreased visual acuity at presentation (mean age; 38.1 vs. 61.5 years, p = 0.020). The asymptomatic patients

Angioid Streaks in Types I and II Congenital Dyserythropoietic Anaemia (CDA).

Background. Angioid streaks (AS) are visible irregular breaks in Bruch's membrane, extending radially from the optic nerve head and with overlaying atrophic retinal pigment epithelium. In 50 % of patients, AS are associated with Pseudoxanthoma elasticum, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, sickle cell anaemia or Paget's disease. In 50 % of patients, AS are idiopathic. Congenital Dyserythropoietic Anaemia (CDA) is a rare, inherited disorder of ineffective erythropoiesis with morphologically abnormal erythroblasts. CDA was first recognised as a separate entity in 1968 and classified into three main groups.

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum and angioid streaks in two cases of beta-thalassaemia.

Two cases of beta thalassaemia with pseudoxanthoma elasticum and angioid streaks (Grönblad-Strandberg syndrome) are reported. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a combination between these two genetically determined disorders. The possible theories of the pathogenesis of pseudoxanthoma elasticum and angioid streaks are discussed.

Angioid streaks and optic disc drusen in cherubism: a case report.

A 65-year-old female patient was referred to our hospital for evaluation for cataract surgery. Her past medical history included corrective jaw surgeries for facial deformities that developed during infancy and persisted through early adulthood. A complete ophthalmological examination revealed bilateral angioid streaks, drusen in both optic disc areas, and a subretinal neovascular membrane in the left macula. Genetic analysis revealed a mutation in the SH3BP2 gene compatible with the diagnosis of cherubism. Clinical and laboratory evaluation revealed no additional systemic disorders. Cherubism
