Central fatigue commonly occurs in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and correlates closely with depression, and cholestatic rats exhibit central fatigue. Therefore, we undertook a series of experiments in both rats with cholestasis caused by bile duct resection (BDR) and sham-resected controls (15 days after surgery) to determine if experimental cholestasis is associated with symptoms of depression that can be modeled in rats, namely anhedonia (loss of pleasure) and the loss of social interest. BDR rats exhibited significant anhedonia compared with sham controls as indicated by a

Anhedonia is a transdiagnostic disturbance of reward processing, yet the comparative efficacy and certainty of available interventions remain unclear. We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and MEDLINE for controlled trials reporting quantitative anhedonia outcomes. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO under CRD42025630784. Random-effects frequentist network meta-analyses were conducted overall and by population, including major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, and healthy individuals with trait anhedonia. Randomized trials were assessed with the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 (RoB 2) tool

BACKGROUND: Anhedonia is apparent in different mental disorders and is suggested to be related to dysfunctions in the reward system and/or affect regulation. It may hence be a common underlying feature associated with symptom severity of mental disorders.
METHODS: We constructed a cross-sectional graphical Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) network and a relative importance network to estimate the relationships between anhedonia severity and the severity of symptom clusters of major depressive disorder (MDD), anxiety sensitivity (AS), attention-deficit hyperactivity disor

This article constitutes a Patient Perspective, grounded in lived experience, its primary aim is to enhance awareness of antidepressant-induced anhedonia by providing experience-based insights, relevant to clinicians, researchers, and caregivers. My own experiences with treatment-resistant depression-anxiety have been significant and long-lasting. In my 22-year-plus journey of illness experience-and having taken over 23 antidepressant medications-emotional-blunting, anhedonia, and mania have all, at times, been side-effect-related factors. This work explores the conundrum of antidepressant-ind

Anhedonia, as one of the core symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD), has been regarded as a potential endophenotype of the disease. Multiple studies have evaluated the potential mechanisms of anhedonia in MDD, and found that MDD patients with anhedonia showed different functions in clinical features. In this review, we focus on the clinical research to explore the differences between MDD patients with and without anhedonia in the clinical manifestations and biological alterations, and elaborate the treatments and prognosis of anhedonia. It is demonstrated that anhedonia is associated wit

BACKGROUND: Anhedonic features within major depressive disorder (MDD) have been associated with worse course and outcome and may predict nonresponse to treatment. However, a detailed clinical profile of anhedonia in MDD is still lacking.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One thousand two hundred ninety-four patients with MDD were selected from the cross-sectional European multicenter Group for the Study of Resistant Depression study. Anhedonia was assessed through the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale anhedonia item "inability to feel." Clinical and demographic features were then analyzed.

BACKGROUND: From a behavioural perspective anhedonia is defined as diminished interest in the engagement of pleasurable activities. Despite its presence across a range of psychiatric disorders, the cognitive processes that give rise to anhedonia remain unclear.
METHODS: Here we examine whether anhedonia is associated with learning from positive and negative outcomes in patients diagnosed with major depression, schizophrenia and opiate use disorder alongside a healthy control group. Responses in the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test - a task associated with healthy prefrontal cortex function - were

INTRODUCTION: Recent works have developed two self-report measures of general and social anhedonia for adolescents. Little is known about the relative stability of these constructs and their associations with psychopathological symptoms over time.
METHODS: A total of 694 Chinese adolescents aged 14-16 years (74.6% girls) completed measures of anhedonia at two time points 1 year apart. General anhedonia was assessed using the Snaith Hamilton Pleasure Scale while social anhedonia was assessed using the Adolescent Anticipatory and Consummatory Interpersonal Pleasure Scale.
RESULTS: General and

INTRODUCTION: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common condition with heterogeneous presentations that often include predominant anhedonia. Previous studies have revealed that childhood trauma is a potent risk factor for the development of MDD; however, the clinical implications of this finding are not fully understood.
METHODS: Participants were adolescents (age 13-21 years) with a diagnosis of moderate-to-severe major depressive disorder and healthy controls. We used generalized linear models to assess the relationship between anhedonia severity and trauma severity in a cross-sectional d

INTRODUCTION: According to cognitive models of depression, selective attentional biases (ABs) for mood-congruent information are core vulnerability factors of depression maintenance. However, findings concerning the presence of these biases in depression are mixed. This study aims to clarify the presence of these ABs among individuals with clinical and subclinical depression.
METHOD: We compared three groups based on a semi-structured diagnostic interview and a depressive symptoms scale (BDI-II): 34 individuals with major depressive disorder (clinically depressed); 35 with a dysphoric mood bu

The purpose of this paper is to reanalyze data from two studies to determine if anhedonia specifically, rather than depression overall, predicts treatment outcome for patients with cocaine use disorders. Measures of baseline anhedonia symptoms were created using anhedonia items from the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) to re-examine National Institute on Drug Abuse Cocaine Collaborative Treatment study data (Crits-Christoph et al., 1999) and the contingency management group from the McKay et al. (2010) trial. Baseline anhedonia was used to predict cocaine abstinence rates across the treatment p

Treatments for Cocaine Use Disorder (CUD) are variably effective, and there are no FDA-approved medications. One approach to developing new treatments for CUD may be to investigate and target poor prognostic signs. One such sign is anhedonia (i.e. a loss of pleasure or interest in non-drug rewards), which predicts worse outcomes in existing CUD treatments. Inflammation is thought to underlie anhedonia in many other disorders, but the relationship between anhedonia and inflammation has not been investigated in CUD. Therefore, we assessed peripheral genome-wide gene expression in n = 48 individu

OBJECTIVE: Maltreatment exposure is a robust predictor of adolescent depression. Yet despite this well-documented association, few studies have simultaneously examined how maltreatment subtypes relate to qualitatively distinct depressive symptoms. The present multiwave longitudinal study addressed this gap in the literature by examining how different maltreatment subtypes independently impact depressed mood and anhedonia over time in a diverse adolescent sample.
METHOD: Adolescents (N = 673, Mage = 14.83, SDage = 0.66, 57.1% female, 32.8% Hispanic, 30.4% Caucasian, 25.0% African American) com

Depression has been linked to multiple forms of aggressive behavior in college students; however, it is unclear which aspects of depression explain this connection. Anhedonia, defined as the loss of interest and/or pleasure in previously enjoyed activities, may provide unique information about relationships between depression and aggression. Using cross-sectional data from two independent samples of college students (N = 747 and N = 736 for Study 1 and Study 2, respectively), we examined whether anhedonia helped explain the relationship between broader depressive symptoms and different forms o

Anhedonia is associated with dysfunction of the neural circuitry of reward in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, its neurobiological basis is not fully understood. The present study examined the association between anhedonia and white matter (WM) characteristics in patients with first-episode MDD. We recruited 30 patients with first-episode drug-naive MDD and 28 healthy controls (HC) to undergo diffusion weighted imaging. We examined specifically the correlation between WM characteristics and anhedonia measured with the Temporal Experience of Pleasure Scale (TEPS) in MDD p

OBJECTIVE: Deficits in memory have been suggested as an influential mechanism of anhedonia, because while pleasant experiences may be enjoyed in-the-moment, the cognitive processes involved in reporting anticipated or remembered enjoyable experiences is thought to be impaired. This study will determine whether any aspects of memory, including visual memory, verbal memory or working memory, are significantly predictive of anhedonia in a sample of schizophrenia, psychotic bipolar disorder and healthy controls.
METHODS: The study included 38 individuals with schizophrenia, 19 individuals with bi

BACKGROUND: Anhedonia is prevalent among substance-dependent populations. The hedonic allostasis model suggests this is due to the effects of addictive substances on neural substrates of reward processing. However, previous research may have been confounded by other factors likely to influence anhedonia, including tobacco use, psychopathology, and history of trauma and other stressors. Thus it remains unclear whether elevated anhedonia in substance-dependent populations is caused by substance use itself, or is due to other correlates of substance dependence.
METHODS: Multivariate analysis of

BACKGROUND: Current treatment guidelines emphasize the limited role of benzodiazepines in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), mainly due to the absence of long-term data, risk of abuse and potential adverse effects. However, benzodiazepines continue to be prescribed for long-term use in a significant number of patients. This study sought to evaluate benzodiazepine use in a large sample of MDD patients seen at a tertiary care clinic, and determine whether use is related to illness severity or complexity, as well as to identify the clinical predictors of benzodiazepine use.

Emotion researchers have distinguished between automatic versus controlled processing of affective information. One previous study with a small sample size found that extreme levels of social anhedonia (SocAnh) in college students, which predicts future schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, is associated with problems in controlled affective processing on a primed evaluation task. The current study examined whether in a larger college student sample SocAnh but not elevated perceptual aberration/magical ideation (PerMag) was associated with poor controlled affective processing. On the primed evalua

Methylphenidate (MPH) treatment in boys diagnosed with ADHD is reported to decrease the risk of drug abuse in adulthood. Similarly, MPH treatment appears to decrease the cocaine preference of male rats during conditioned place preference (CPP) tests. However, the effects of MPH treatment on later drug use of girls/women or CPP in female rodents have not been fully examined, nor have a clinically-relevant MPH dose and/or administration route been thoroughly studied. Here, Sprague-Dawley rats (n=34/sex/treatment) were treated orally 3x/day on postnatal days (PNDs) 29-50 with water or 3mg MPH/kg,
