Seroprevalence and Associated Risk Factors of Human Brucellosis in a Farming and Animal Health Community in South Africa, 2015-2016.

Brucellosis is a widespread zoonotic disease and a major contributor to febrile illness, often underdiagnosed. This study investigated the seroprevalence of brucellosis and the associated exposure factors within South African farming and animal health communities. A cross-sectional survey was conducted across 40,000 km2 in the Free State and Northern Cape provinces from 2015 to 2016. Interviews and serum samples were collected from 847 volunteers on randomly selected farms and veterinary professionals listed in a regional register. Samples were tested using a commercial Brucella IgG ELISA. Ris

Impact assessment of a community-based animal health project in Dollo Ado and Dollo Bay districts, southern Ethiopia.

Participatory methods were used to assess the impact of a community-based animal health worker (CAHW) project in two remote pastoralist districts of Ethiopia. The CAHW project had been operating for 3 years at the time of the assessment. Participatory methods were standardized and repeated with 10 groups of informants in the project area. The assessment showed significant reductions in disease impact for diseases handled by CAHWs compared with diseases not handled by CAHWs. In camels, there was significant reduction (p < 0.001) in the impact of mange, trypanosomosis, helminthosis, anthrax and

Identifying and mapping key relationships and communication pathways influencing farmers' antibiotic use in production animals: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic use in food-producing animals can drive antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Communication is a central strategy to promote behavioral change. As such, there is a need to determine from whom and where farmers receive information about antibiotic use. We aim to identify communication pathways that influence farmers' antibiotic use in food-producing animals and understand the barriers and facilitators for using these information sources. METHODS: PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines were followed. PubMed, CAB Abstracts, ProQuest Social Science Premium Collection, an

BRCAShare-Assessment of an animated digital message for intrafamilial communication of pathogenic variant positive test results: A feasibility study.

While genetic testing for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome (HBOC) is well-established in the field of medicine, family members' uptake of cascade genetic testing for known familial pathogenic variants remains low. Probands often become responsible for initiating familial communication about their testing results, and barriers to communication may include difficulty in conveying information to relatives and a lack of communication resources for probands' use. In this study, we tested a two-minute animated digital message (ADM) intervention guided by the Health Belief Model (HBM) in

Sero - epidemiology of brucellosis in people and their livestock: A linked human - animal cross-sectional study in a pastoralist community in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is associated with massive livestock production losses and human morbidity worldwide. Efforts to control brucellosis among pastoralist communities are limited by scarce data on the prevalence and risk factors for exposure despite the high human-animal interactions in these communities. This study simultaneously assessed the seroprevalence of brucellosis and associated factors of exposure among pastoralists and their livestock in same households. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in pastoralist communities in Marsabit County - Kenya. A total of 1,074 women a

Serological survey of Coxiella burnetii infections in dairy cattle, sheep, goats and zoo animals in Hungary - Short communication.

Q fever is a disease of high zoonotic potential, but interest in its causative agent is rather low although it causes some public health problems in Hungary. The prevalence of Q fever is highly variable by country. The main reservoirs of the disease are the same domestic ruminant species everywhere, but the epidemiological profile depends on the features of the specific reservoir. The aim of this large-scale study was to demonstrate the importance of Q fever in different species as a possible source for human infection in most regions of Hungary. A total of 851 serum samples from 44 dairy farm

Subtype distribution of Blastocystis isolated from humans and associated animals in an indigenous community with poor hygiene in Peninsular Malaysia.

Blastocystis is one of the most common parasites inhabiting the intestinal tract of human and animals. Currently, human Blastocystis isolates are classified into nine subtypes (STs) based on the phylogeny of their small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene. Although its pathogenicity remains controversial, the possibility of zoonotic transmission was recognized since eight of the nine STs (except for ST9) have been reported in both humans and animals. A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence and subtype distribution of Blastocystis isolated from humans and associated

Biogeography of Leptospira in wild animal communities inhabiting the insular ecosystem of the western Indian Ocean islands and neighboring Africa.

Understanding the processes driving parasite assemblages is particularly important in the context of zoonotic infectious diseases. Leptospirosis is a widespread zoonotic bacterial infection caused by pathogenic species of the genus Leptospira. Despite a wide range of animal hosts, information is still lacking on the factors shaping Leptospira diversity in wild animal communities, especially in regions, such as tropical insular ecosystems, with high host species richness and complex biogeographical patterns. Using a large dataset (34 mammal species) and a multilocus approach at a regional scale

Evaluation and delivery of domestic animal health services in remote communities in the Northwest Territories: A case study of status and needs.

Domestic animal health services are supplied to communities in Canada's Northwest Territories (NT) in diverse ways, including private veterinary practices in 2 of 33 communities, and by mail-order, fly-in, free clinics, and a government-coordinated lay vaccinator program in some of the other 31 communities. We evaluated delivery, needs, and potential uptake of domestic animal health services in the Sahtu Settlement Area, NT by offering free clinics for 225 dogs in 2008 and 2009; and administered questionnaires to 42 dog owners and 67 students in 2008. Owners indicated that 20% of dogs were neu

Metagenomic insights into the microbial community structure and resistomes of a tropical agricultural soil persistently inundated with pesticide and animal manure use.

Persistent use of pesticides and animal manure in agricultural soils inadvertently introduced heavy metals and antibiotic/antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) into the soil with deleterious consequences. The microbiome and heavy metal and antibiotic resistome of a pesticide and animal manure inundated agricultural soil (SL6) obtained from a vegetable farm at Otte, Eiyenkorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, was deciphered via shotgun metagenomics and functional annotation of putative ORFs (open reading frames). Structural metagenomics of SL6 microbiome revealed 29 phyla, 49 classes, 94 orders, 183 familie

Community-led data collection using Open Data Kit for surveillance of animal African trypanosomiasis in Shimba hills, Kenya.

OBJECTIVE: In Sub-Saharan Africa, there is an increase in trypanosome non-susceptibility to multiple trypanocides, but limited information on judicious trypanocide use is accessible to smallholder farmers and agricultural stakeholders in disease endemic regions, resulting in widespread multi-drug resistance. Huge economic expenses and the laborious nature of extensive field studies have hindered collection of the requisite large-scale prospective datasets required to inform disease management. We examined the efficacy of community-led data collection strategies using smartphones by smallholder

Antibiotic Resistance in an Indian Rural Community: A 'One-Health' Observational Study on Commensal Coliform from Humans, Animals, and Water.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are an escalating grim menace to global public health. Our aim is to phenotype and genotype antibiotic-resistant commensal Escherichia coli (E. coli) from humans, animals, and water from the same community with a 'one-health' approach. The samples were collected from a village belonging to demographic surveillance site of Ruxmaniben Deepchand (R.D.) Gardi Medical College Ujjain, Central India. Commensal coliforms from stool samples from children aged 1-3 years and their environment (animals, drinking water from children's households, common source- and waste-water

Host-, Environment-, or Human-Related Effects Drive Interspecies Interactions in an Animal Tuberculosis Multi-Host Community Depending on the Host and Season.

In many Mediterranean ecosystems, animal tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium bovis, is maintained by multi-host communities in which cattle and different wildlife species establish interaction networks contributing to M. bovis transmission and persistence. Most studies have addressed wildlife-cattle disease-relevant interactions, focusing on reservoir hosts, while disregarding the potential contribution of the so-called accidental hosts and/or neglecting wildlife-wildlife interactions. In this work, we aimed to characterise interspecies interactions in an endemic TB risk area and identi

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of Communal Livestock Farmers regarding Animal Health and Zoonoses in Far Northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

The presence of zoonotic diseases adversely affects livestock production and farmers' livelihood in communal areas. A lack of awareness about zoonotic diseases among rural farmers results in economic losses and health risks. The far north-eastern corner of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province, South Africa, is home to large numbers of communal livestock farmers who live adjacent to wildlife reserves and international borders. There have been reports of zoonotic and trade-sensitive diseases in the area, but farmers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) in this regard are poorly understood. This st

Factors associated with pastoral community knowledge and occurrence of mycobacterial infections in human-animal interface areas of Nakasongola and Mubende districts, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are emerging opportunistic pathogens whose role in human and animal disease is increasingly being recognized. Major concerns are their role as opportunistic pathogens in HIV/AIDS infections. The role of open natural water sources as source and livestock/wildlife as reservoirs of infections to man are well documented. This presents a health challenge to the pastoral systems in Africa that rely mostly on open natural water sources to meet livestock and human needs. Recent study in the pastoral areas of Uganda showed infections with same genotypes of
